This is Hull and East Riding --

ADJ who helped to shape Hull's musical history will be flown in from New York to celebrate the 21st anniversary of one of the country's longest-running dance nights.

Déjà Vu nights, now held at the Tokyo nightclub in Anlaby Road, will welcome Todd Terry over the Easter weekend.

The prolific DJ, remix artist and producer was responsible for making Hull band Everything But The Girl a worldwide hit.

The king of house music's visit to the city will mark the night's success with local clubbers.

Terry Spamer, who runs the Déjà Vu nights, said: "Todd is one of the biggest DJs ever to come to Hull and there will be a lot of local interest with his musical links to the city.

"There have been a lot of highs and lows throughout the past 21 years, a lot of memories and too many good times to mention.

"I started out as a clubber myself in the 1990s and visited venues across the country. I always thought to myself 'why are we not getting any of these big names in Hull?'

"So I asked a few promoters and they said it would never work.

"But they also said, if I was so passionate about it, why didn't I just do it myself, so I did."

Terry said he wanted to cater for the kind of people who were travelling from the city to the likes of Manchester and Leeds for a decent night out.

He said it was a "gamble" and a lot of the acts cost a pretty penny to book for Déjà Vu.

He said: "We still get around 1,000 people through the door for the big events and it's great to have that kind of support.

I'm Hull born and bred and I think people realise we are making an effort. I used to work in the caravan industry but started doing it full-time when the nights took off in the city."

He said Todd will be a big draw for Hull revellers who would not get many other chances to see him on the decks.

Todd Terry was instrumental in helping launch the career of Everything But The Girl, and in particular the track Missing, which has had hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube.

The band formed in Hull during the 1980s, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist and singer Ben Watt.

Missing was their most successful single and it charted in several countries in 1994.

"We always stick our necks out and it's worth it," Terry said.

"Although times are tough and people don't have a lot of money, they still want to let their hair down." Reported by This is 9 hours ago.
