This is Plymouth --
A FATHER repeatedly spat at his mother-in-law while she was holding his four-week-old baby, a court heard.
Karl Dennis, aged 32, then picked up the girl himself and kicked the woman with the infant in his arms, Plymouth magistrates heard.
Dennis returned home drunk late at night and pursued the mother-in-law, who was babysitting, around his home.
He also pushed the woman on to the bed of his sleeping stepson, the court heard.
Dennis, of Ringmore Way, Honicknowle, admitted assaulting the woman by beating her on December 13.
Jenny Cater, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Dennis returned home just before 2am and shouted abuse at his mother-in-law.
She added he spat in her face as she held his four-week-old daughter.
Miss Cater said she retreated to another room, but Dennis pursued her, shouting abuse.
She added: "He continued to spit in her hair and spit in her face.
"She describes him as extremely drunk at the time."
Miss Cater said the woman then ran into the bedroom of her sleeping 14-year-old grandson.
She added Dennis followed, grabbed her and threw her on to the boy's bed with the baby still in her arms.
The court heard the woman gave the infant to the teenager and ran downstairs.
But Miss Cater said Dennis followed, having picked up the little girl himself, and kicked his mother-in-law as she bent down to pick up the phone and call the police.
She added Dennis admitted to police that he had spat at his mother-in-law and said he was sorry.
Miss Cater said the victim did not describe any injuries.
But she added: "She said in a statement that she was shocked by the actions of the defendant and it was clearly unacceptable in front of her grandchildren."
Paul Brookman, for Dennis, said he had "alcohol issues" and had been described antidepressants by his doctor.
But he added he was still living with his partner and her children and was working.
Magistrates ordered a probation officer to prepare a report on his background before sentence.
He was released on bail until January 28, on condition he does not contact his mother-in-law nor go near her home. Reported by This is 5 hours ago.
