
A man aged in his 60s in a grey or white coloured van grabbed at a young girl in New Park Road in Foxhole at 5.30pm.
She managed to break free and the van was seen to drive off towards Smallcombe Road.
The girl is thought to be of primary school age.
Police are urging people to be vigilant.
A spokesman said: "We are treating this incident seriously.
"We don't want people to become unnecessarily alarmed but we do want people to be vigilant and aware and if they see anyone suspicious who matches this description to contact us."
The man is described as a white man aged in his sixties of scruffy appearance with a moustache, brown eyes and hair scraped back into a pony tail.
He is said to have a Scottish or Irish accent.
He was wearing a gold ring and a plain blue round neck t-shirt.
