![Should the age of consent for sex be lowered?]()
This is Bristol -- Prime minister David Cameron has rejected a call to lower the age of consent for sex from 16 to 15. Faculty of Public Health professor John Ashton said society had to accept that about a third of all boys and girls were having sex at 14 or 15. But those acting for some of the victims of predatory paedophile Jimmy Saville have warned against lowering the age of consent, saying it could make things easier for those who prey on younger people. *We asked you what you thought, and asked you to vote in a poll.* 94 per cent of you said you didn't think the age of consent should be lowered. And here are some of your comments: Steve059 said: "I suppose that, by the law of averages, DC ought to get something right once in his life." And Lolly60 wrote: "David C is right don't lower the age to 15." BristolPete30 said: "Rather than lowering the age of consent I would tighten up on those who sexualise our children. Even top high street chains have sold padded bras for eight-year-olds and pink playboy stationary for children. "If a couple were done for grooming it might change an awful lot of things. "Then there are the pop stars who've made their money by targeting kids and now sell sexualisation. "Radio 1 has no problem condemning Jimmy Saville, but is very happy to promote stars who make a living from sex. "Still I guess as far as this government is concerned if it's a choice between big business and the welfare of our children, then it's a no brainer – our kids can fend for themselves." Truth24 wrote: "Leave it at 16. Teenagers are already being given contraceptives by No Worries staff in school clinics and other venues under the age of consent and two teens can have sex if they are under 16 if they can show they are responsible. "Problem is the lines are clouded. For example, a 15-year-old boy can have sex with a 15-, 14- or 13-year-old if the partner is happy but if a 16- or 17-year-old boy wants to have a relationship with a consenting 15-year-old, nobody knows what to do. "The age of consent suits the politicians as long as the girl does not get pregnant. Then they promote contraception to any age 13 and older and fund this advice too! Too many grey areas at the moment."
