This is Grimsby -- A PAEDOPHILE caught in the act of sexually abusing a young girl in an Ingoldmells caravan faces dying in prison after he was jailed for 18 years. Holidaymaker Ralph Stevenson was surprised by a fellow visitor who called at his caravan to say goodbye to him as she left the site in the resort. The horrified woman walked into Stevenson's holiday home to find him in his bedroom abusing a seven-year-old girl. Police were called and arrived at the caravan to find Stevenson was still with the girl. Mark van der Zwart, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court that officers carried out a search and found explicit photographs of Stevenson committing sexual offences on the child. Other photos were found on his mobile. The former Royal Marine later made a full confession to repeatedly raping and sexually abusing the girl. Stevenson, 69, of Mayfield Grove, Long Eaton, admitted two charges of rape, nine charges of sexual assault between October 2008 and July this year. He also admitted three charges of taking an indecent photograph of a child and a further charge of possession of 39 indecent images of a child. Judge Michael Heath told him "There must be a very lengthy sentence. This was appalling abuse of this little girl." Vanessa Marshall, defending, said "He was caught in the act. He takes full responsibility for his actions. He has been trying to understand why he behaved like that. He cannot make sense of it and it is something that will plague him for the rest of his life. "The likelihood is that he will spend the rest of his days in custody. "His family have cut him off. His future is bleak but he knows this is his punishment." Detective Sergeant Sarah Constantine, of Lincolnshire Police said afterwards: "The sentence given to Mr Stevenson reflects the severity of his offences and the devastating and lasting impact this has upon the victim and their family. "I hope that the sentence is of some comfort to them when they try to rebuild their lives and that, one day, they can put this behind them."
