'Ban military lorries from Bransholme' after Winifred Holtby schoolgirl hit This is Hull and East Riding --

MILITARY trucks should not be allowed to enter Bransholme after a schoolgirl was knocked down and seriously injured, says a ward councillor. Police are continuing to investigate the accident, which left 11-year-old Winifred Holtby School pupil Jayne Huggins badly hurt on Wednesday afternoon.

It has been confirmed she was hit by a lorry from the Defence School of Transport (DST) in Leconfield.

Councillor Philip Webster, who represents Bransholme West, said he was waiting for the facts to emerge surrounding the accident, which happened in Axminster Close.

However, he believes DST should reconsider its future use of Bransholme in light of the accident and concerns raised locally.

Cllr Webster said: "DST needs to reassess and revaluate the use of military vehicles in Bransholme.

"In my view, it is inappropriate to use these wagons on a housing estate where you have kids crossing roads.

"They should stick to roads such as Holderness Road and Beverley Road – people expect to see these wagons in these areas, not in Bransholme."

Cllr Webster said residents have approached him with concerns about traffic in the area in light of the accident.

Some of these concerns surround the use of vehicles from DST, where members of all three Armed Forces are taught to drive a wide range of military vehicles.

Cllr Webster, who intends to approach DST with his concerns, said: "I will certainly meet with residents, but first I think we need to establish exactly what happened here.

"If the driver is proven to be at fault then appropriate action will, no doubt, be taken by the police.

"But if the girl has stepped out into the path of the vehicle, we will look at what action we can take to improve safety.

"There's the option of a pedestrian crossing or illuminated signs informing drivers that schoolchildren cross that road to try to make everyone more aware of traffic."

Cllr Webster said he has failed on previous occasions to make an area near Axminster Close safer.

"Children are known to cut in between parked cars in Wawne Road," he said. "I applied to have double yellow lines put in place. But people objected saying they had nowhere to park their cars."

Cllr Webster said his thoughts were with the injured girl who was last night described as "stable" at Hull Royal Infirmary.

He said: "Regardless of blame, I am certain the driver has been badly shaken over this."

A Humberside Police spokesman said enquiries are ongoing. Witnesses should call 101.

No one from DST was available for comment.
