Newcastle pub The Ironmarket caught selling booze... at 7.12am! This is Staffordshire --

A PUB which sold booze to a 15-year-old girl just days after being caught serving alcohol first thing in the morning has been ordered to tighten up procedures.

The Ironmarket's designated premises supervisor has also been replaced after police requested a review of the Newcastle venue's licence.

Police asked for 18 conditions to be imposed after 'two serious failings' by the bar this year.

Now Newcastle borough Council has ordered the pub, owned by national company Admiral Taverns, to take several measures to avoid a repeat. They include the use of UV lighting to check ID and CCTV to cover all public areas.

The order comes after a sting by police and Trading Standards on January 12 when the underage girl bought two bottles of alcopop WKD.

Sergeant David Wright, of Staffordshire Police's Northern Licensing Unit, said: "The volunteer was chosen because she had a typical appearance of a child of her age.

"The volunteer was sold the alcoholic drinks by the member of staff serving behind the bar. Neither the person making the sale of alcohol or the door staff on duty at the time challenged the girl about her age."

Following the incident police interviewed the member of staff who revealed she had worked at the pub since the previous August but had received no training about selling alcohol to under-18s.

Sgt Wright said: "The person making the sale was asked why she hadn't challenged the volunteer for proof of age and she said she thought the doorman would have checked everyone's ID prior to entry.

"The measures put in place at the venue by the premises licence holder and the operator of the venue are inadequate to prevent the sale of alcohol to juveniles and therefore undermine the protection of children from licensing objectives."

That incident came just a few days after police had visited the pub to investigate reports of trading outside its opening hours.

CCTV footage revealed punters were served booze just after 7.10am on January 5 when it was not supposed to open until 8am.

PC Emma Morris, who viewed the footage, said: "At approximately 7.12am onwards a number of males approach the bar and speak to a male behind the bar. The male behind the bar then proceeds to serve the males with various drinks such as pints of lager. The footage clearly shows the males hand over money to the person behind the bar."
