DNA Micro Edit: Justice for Nirbhaya but no respite for women yet

The entire country is hailing the Supreme Court for upholding the capital punishment handed to Nirbhaya's rapists. The accused did not deserve any mercy for the demonic act which devastated not just her family, but the entire nation. But even as we go celebrating the verdict, the ground reality is different, and disturbing.

Delhi continues to be an unsafe city, with no decline in rape, molestation, and crimes against women.

The December 16, 2012, gang rape triggered a public outcry and the government issued amendments in the law relating to crimes against women, making it more stringent.

While the laws are now tougher, the mindset of the cops who always view the victim with suspicion remains unchanged.

A large number of cases go unreported for fear of a long-drawn out judicial process, and many of the victims opt to not seek justice rather than to relive the trauma and be subjected to salacious questions, first by the police and then by the defense counsel in public, in court.

It, however, doesn't take away the historic stance taken by the apex court. It is definitely a victory for Nirbhaya's family and for the cops who probed the case and made it solid enough to withstand the defense. Most of all, it is a triumphant moment for the girl whose life was brutally snuffed out by a group of monsters high on arrogance and bestiality who thought they could get away with it.

But this is just the beginning, we cannot let our guard down in the fight for a secure India for women.

Girl Power Was Free-Flowing At The 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards

”Beauty and the Beast” and “Stranger Things” may have taken home the big awards at Sunday’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, but feminism was the real winner of the night.

Actress and activist Emma Watson set the tone for the evening as she accepted the Best Actor award for her role in “Beauty and the Beast.” Watson cheered MTV for dropping its gendered acting categories, agreeing that male and female actors don’t “need to be separated into two different categories.”
”MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone, but to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes ― and that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories,” Watson said. “Empathy, and the ability to use your imagination, should have no limits.”

Watson also expressed admiration for her “Beauty and the Beast” character, Belle, saying the Best Actor award was for “who Belle is and what she represent[s].”

“The village in our fairytale wanted to make Belle believe that our world was smaller than the way she saw it — that her curiosity and her passion for knowledge were grounds for alienation,” Watson added. “I loved playing someone who didn’t listen to any of that. I’m so proud to be a part of a film that celebrates diversity, literacy, inclusion, joy, and love the way that this one does.”
”Beauty and the Beast” director Bill Condon echoed his star’s sentiments later on in the evening as he accepted the award for Movie of the Year.

“Thank you to the audience that embraced this movie so much, but especially to the women,” Condon said. “Women have proven that they are a huge and powerful audience, and it’s going to change the movie business.”

“Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown continued the girl power party as she tearfully accepted the Best Actor in a Show award.

Congrats on your #MTVAward, @milliebbrown pic.twitter.com/I47TMkiOVp

— MTV (@MTV) May 8, 2017

”Lastly, I want to thank the Duffer brothers,” Brown said. “They’ve created a badass, female, iconic character that I’ve got the honor to play.”

Amen to that.
Perhaps the most feminist moment of the night came when U.S. congresswoman Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and “Blackish” actor Tracee Ellis Ross presented “Hidden Figures” with the prize for Best Fight Against The System. Taraji P. Henson accepted the award with a truly moving speech, saying she felt the film was her “mission.”
“This movie was bigger than all of us,” Henson said. “We understood that this is a part of history that needed to be re-implemented into the blood and veins of American history. For me, it was very important because I grew up with an understanding — no one ever told me that girls couldn’t do math and science, but there was an understanding. There was an understanding that it was for boys.”

She continued, “I remember getting this script and being very upset, because it felt like a dream was stolen from me. And it became my mission, and everyone’s mission who was involved with this film, to dispel that myth, so that another young girl would not grow up thinking that her mind wasn’t capable of grasping math and science.”
We don’t know about you, but we’re feeling like we could pretty much take over the world right now. More speeches like this ― and fewer like this ― please.

A little girl has become a viral sensation for confronting a man impersonating President Donald Trump.

“You’re a disgrace to the world,” the unidentified child said.

Some people on social media were under the impression the girl was insulting Trump himself. However, the man in the video was Anthony Atamanuik, who hosts “The President Show” on Comedy Central as Trump.

It’s not clear if she knew it was Atamanuik, or thought it was the real Trump ― but the impersonator said on Twitter that the moment was spontaneous and unplanned.

“I watched her form it in her mind right in front of me,” he wrote. “She should be a new resistance meme!”

Atamanuik also called her “brave, funny and smart.”

The clip turned the girl into a new hero of the left on social media:

In a shocking incident, a girl appearing for NEET exam at a centre in Kannur was allegedly told by an invigilator to remove her top innerwear, in the name of adhering to the CBSE dress code.

The mother of the 19-year-old candidate who appeared for the examination yesterday at a centre at Pariyaram in Kannur, claimed her daughter was asked to remove her top inner wear before writing the exam.

"After my daughter entered the exam centre, she came out and handed me her bra, saying she had been asked to remove it as per the CBSE dress code," the girls mother said.

She alleged the invigilator had directed her daughter to do so after a metal detector emitted a "beep sound".

There was apparently a metal hook in the innerwear, which set off the alarm.

Kannur District Police Chief G Siva Vikaram said a case would be registered if the parents or the girl filed a complaint.

"So far we have not received any complaint. The Special Branch has been asked to look into the incident," he said.

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET-UG is an entrance examination for students who wish to study any graduate medical course in the country.

Different centres in the state also reported instances of girls being asked to remove their head scarves and full sleeve dresses of both girls and boys being cut off.

The issue echoed in the state assembly, which is in session, with Education Minister C Raveendranath saying the government would look into the matter.

However, state education department sources said the state had no role in the conduct of the NEET exam. All directions on its conduct was being given by CBSE, they said.

Former state unit chief of the Congress, V M Sudheeran, condemned the incident and said, "The ordeal (of the girl) was cruel and a blot on the state."

He also demanded that the government conduct a probe and punish the guilty.

The Kerala Womens Commission has ordered a probe into the incident.

CPI(M) MP P K Sreemathi also condemned the incident, saying the authorities would be held responsible if the girl failed to qualify as she had been "mentally harassed". Reported by Deccan Herald 5 hours ago.
