AAP launches project 'Captain Da Dhokha' *Chandigarh:* AAP, which is eyeing to capture power in 2017 polls, has launched a campaign, Captain Da Dhokha, to "expose the lies" of state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh who was in power during 2002-2007.

AAP's Dakha candidate HS Phoolka alleged Amarinder was making false promises of giving jobs to youth.

*Howrah:* A BJP central team was stopped by West Bengal police from entering the violence-hit area in Dhulagarh in Howrah on Saturday, after which it staged a road blockade, accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of pursuing "appeasement politics".

The BJP delegation comprised party MPs Jagdambika Pal, Satpal Singh, state president Dilip Ghosh and its national secretary Rahul Sinha.

Cops told the delegation that they would not be allowed to proceed since prohibitory orders have been imposed under Section 144 of CrPC.

Angered by it, the BJP delegation along with one thousand odd supporters blocked the road in protest. Some BJP workers also blocked the busy Kolkata-Mumbai NH6. Both blockades were later lifted.

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, who was supposed to lead a silent protest near the venue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public meeting on Saturday, alleged that he was placed under house arrest by the police. The police, however, denied the charge and said they were only trying to maintain law and order.

Ahead of his morcha on Saturday, the police deployed heavy bandobast outside Nirupam's Andheri residence. However, speaking to news agencies, Nirupam said, "The area outside my house is under heavy police bandobast and I am being prevented from stepping out. In the present democratic set up, Opposition leaders are being virtually kept under house-arrest."

Denying the charge, Deven Bharati, joint commissioner of police, (law and order) Mumbai police, said, "He was not under house arrest. The security arrangement was made across the city."*Rajendra Vithoba, a tutari player, was arrested for playing the instrument during the arrival of PM Narendra Modi at Bandra's MMRDA grounds*

Nirupam was allowed to leave his residence only after 4.30 pm, after which he organised a rasta roko near Versova circle. "Nirupam was detained for conducting the rasta roko and was released at 6.30 pm," added Bharati.

After the Congress chief was detained, party members burnt vehicle tyres to protest against the police action.

*Pune:* Chaos and panic ensued at the National Institute of Banking Management (NIBM), Kondhwa, after a male leopard was found trapped in the campus kitchen. A team of seven forest officials rescued the wild animal after four hours.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning around 8.30 am in the institute's ground-floor kitchen. A housekeeping member spotted the leopard's tail near a cupboard, and locked the door.

The NIBM management alerted officials from the Maharashtra Forest Department in Pune. Deputy conservation forest officer, Satyajeet Gujar, said, "The leopard was running around the kitchen looking to escape." The forest officials broke the glass windows of the kitchen and tried to inject the leopard with a tranquiliser. "On the sixth attempt, he was unconscious," Gujar recounted.

Appealing to "dishonest" people to respond to his fight against black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday warned those preferring to defy the country's law that the fight will continue till victory is achieved. "I invite you to accept the country's law and regulations. Please return to the system. We don't want to hang you, but I want to tell you that you will have to part with the poor's share (from your ill-gotten money)," Modi said at a large gathering, after laying the foundation for the Shivaji Maharaj Memorial and several other big ticket infrastructure projects in Mumbai.

"The time has come to destroy the dishonest. Very few people do this (financial malpractices) but because of them, crores suffer. They don't know that their troubles began when they went to the bank. They shouldn't think that they are sorted once they deposited their money or engaged bank officers in corrupt practices to turn their black money into white," Modi said, adding that the suffering of the common people will reduce after the post-demonetisation period of 50 days.*The family of the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, were present at the event as well*

He said the (dishonest) people who didn't fear him or his government should at least fear the might of the people who have elected a majority government at the Centre after many years. "Remember that the 125 crore-population of this country stands supporting me in this war against black money and corruption. The people are not ready to accept malpractice any longer. They want my government to continue working against corruption and black money," said Modi.

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, CM Devendra Fadnavis, union minister Nitin Gadkari and several others shared dais with the PM. Thackeray has been opposing the implementation of demonetisation and criticised Modi very often, though he said he did not oppose the decision per say. Modi also responded to the charge that people were unhappy over demonetisation. "Winning elections is taken as a proof that any government is doing good work. The people of Maharashtra have given the BJP a mandate in the recent civic polls and the result speaks for itself."

*Attacks Congress*
Without naming the Congress, Modi attacked the party that has ruled the country for several decades. "The people who have eaten malai (butter) for 70 years has done whatever possible to destabilise the demonetisation scheme. They scared people, spread rumours, but I must say that the people who we call illiterate did not succumb to the pressure tactics of handful leaders," he said while launching a scathing attack on Congress senior leadership.*(From left) Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, CM Devendra Fadnavis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Nitin Gadkari at the event where Prime Minister Modi lay the foundation stone for the Shivaji Memorial on Saturday. *Country, Mumbai, will change*
Modi ridiculed adversaries who mock his government's tagline 'Desh badal raha hai (the country is changing)'. "Who says the country cannot change? I say it will change and grow and stand tall. I'm saying this on the basis of my three-year experience in the government," he said. Referring to the city projects he kicked off on Saturday, Modi said it was a historic day for Mumbai as the work on projects worth R1.6 lakh crore has started in one go. "The Fadnavis government will ensure these projects are completed in time. I'm happy that the state government is working tirelessly for the development of the city," he said, setting an agenda of a Mumbai makeover ahead of the civic polls.

He said the BJP's focal point was sustainable development, that will empower the poor and middle class. He paid rich tributes to King Shivaji saying that the mid-sea memorial will begin an era of tourism in the country. "Iconic structures give countries identity. The Shivaji memorial, too, will give us an unique identity," he said. The PM also plans to start the fort tourism pilot from Maharashtra.

*CM slams memorial opponents*
Fadnavis, who also spoke today, said 'the people who opposed the Shivaji Memorial, did not think of the future. "These people only live in the present. In the coming years, India will be known by the Shivaji memorial, which will be taller and more imposing than the Statue of Liberty," he said.

*Clear coastal road: Uddhav*
Speaking on the occasion, Thackeray requested the PM to give the BMC's pet project of the coastal road an environmental clearance. The appeal was a clear indication that the Centre has not been paying attention to the Sena-controlled infra project. The Sena chief also asked for handing over historic forts in the state to the government for care-taking saying that the central agency Archeological Survey of India, was not very serious with its work.*Incomplete projects yet to get govt nod*

After thirteen days of the Aarey chopper crash (December 11), Vrinda Modi, 34, one of the victims, succumbed to her injuries at the privately-run National Burns Center in Airoli. Her infection became severe in the last two days and despite being on antibiotics, she couldn't pull through. She died due to septicaemia — an infection of the blood.

Taking to mid-day, Dr Sunil Keshwani, director of NBC, said, "She had sustained 50 per cent burns and was kept in isolation. She was given the best treatment but in the past two days, the infection spread across her body. We had removed all the dead skin and replaced it with new skin. But she succumbed to the infection on Saturday morning. I saw her in the morning at around 7.30am but around 10 am, she passed away," he said. The body has been sent for post-mortem as per the medical guidelines.

Three persons among a group of seven died on Friday night when the boat they were on, on the Powai Lake, overturned after hitting a rod and a fishnet placed in the lake. The three who died have been identified as Dinesh Bhoir (34), Atif Latif Khan (22) and Rashool Khan (43). Family members of the deceased said that the men, most of whom are in the construction business, met each other around six months ago. This was the first time they were partying together.

The party was thrown by Rashool, a Ghatkopar based businessman, who wanted to host his friends on a houseboat parked on Powai Lake. The party, say Powai police. By Saturday night all three bodies were recovered. The police say, the party began at 7 pm and, aside from Dinesh and Atif (Rashool's nephew), two others — Deepak Patil (24) and Naresh Patil (46) — reached the jetty on time. From here, they were ferried on a boat, to the houseboat.*While the bodies of Asif Khan (22) and his uncle Rashool Khan (43) were recovered by 5 pm on Saturday, search was still on for Dinesh Bhoir's body. Pic/Datta Kumbhar*

At around 10.30 pm, two other friends, Kunal Patil (35) and Paresh Pancholi (34), arrived at the jetty and the boatman Abbu Mandal (21), headed off to ferry them back to the houseboat. However, the rest of the group also got on to the boat. When the group had picked up the two, and was returning to the houseboat, the boat (which is driven by oars) hit a divider — that is constructed in the lake to prevent idols immersed during Ganesh Puja) from slipping deeper into the lake — and overturned. All the occupants of the boat were thrown into the lake. While the rest managed to take support of the floating boat, or swim to the shore, Dinesh and Asif couldn't and drowned.

Rashool, say the survivors, was a good swimmer and had managed to swim ashore but heard Dinesh and Asif shouting for help. Speaking with mid-day, Rashool's brother Faiz Khan said, "He was a good swimmer. He swam to the bank but went back to rescue his friends. We had the habit of helping people in need and may be that's why he counted his friends' lives over his." Rashool is survived by two children and his wife.*Kunal Patil with his wife*

Abbu who is being kept under observation at the Powai Polyclinic and Hospital, stated that before the incident, he had made two trips from the houseboat to the jetty and back. On the third trip, all five friends decided to accompany him. He admits that the boat was further imbalanced by the presence of eight persons on it. Ideally, there should be no more than six passengers on the boat.

"When the boat turned over, Naresh and Deepak swam across while Panchal, Kunal and I took support of the boat. As it was also drowning, we started shouting help. Then, a nearby boatman rescued us," he added. While Abbu claims that the friends had consumed alcohol, the Naresh said that this was not true and that all friends were in their senses.*The deceased Atif Khan and Dinesh Bhoir*

Atif's aunt Noorja said he was excited about the party and had even uploaded a picture on the social media site Snapchat. "He always wanted to go on a houseboat party. We never knew it would take his life," she said. Kunal who bought a house few month back and has a two-month-old daughter said that he was lucky that he survived though he doesn't know how to swim. "Dinesh and Rashool, who knew how to swim didn't make it but I survived. I am really feeling sad for them," he said.

It is a common sight to see posters from various political parties cropping up overnight, taking credit for any civic work being carried out in their respective areas. The practice, however, backfired for a Gorai corporator, Shiva Shetty, when a team of government officials raided three under-construction toilets in Gautam Nagar, behind the Gorai bus depot, last Thursday. An FIR was filed against Shetty, as the structures in question violate CRZ norms, that prohibit construction within a 50-metre vicinity of the mangroves."

According to forest officials, who were accompanied by enforcing authorities (including the Nayab Tahsildar and the Revenue Department) the contractor and his workers made a quick escape from the construction site, just before the officials arrived. The only evidence they could collect was statements of a few locals and a poster bearing the name and photograph of Shetty, stating that the work was sponsored by him. Based on the findings and panchnama, an FIR was filed against Shetty and the unknown contractor at the MHB Police Station (a copy of which is with mid-day), under IPC sections. The case is still being investigated.

Shetty denied having anything to do with the construction of the illegal structure. When asked about the poster, he said it was the handiwork of people who wanted to tarnish his image. Shetty said, "I did hear about the FIR, but if one checks with the BMC office, it will be clear that they are the ones who initiated the project, using government funds. I have not spent a single penny from my pocket nor do I know who put up my poster there," he said.

Assistant Commissioner BMC, Kishore Gandhi from the R/C Ward, confirmed that the work was indeed being carried out by his staff, as per central government directives to curb open defecation. "There are over 100 hutment dwellers, who do not have access to toilets. If it is proven that the toilets are indeed violating CRZ norms, we shall take steps to relocate them," he said.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/dec/25bhandup-bike-women-s.jpg

In the last one month, the playground near Sanskruti Hall in Kokan Nagar, Bhandup, has witnessed an unprecedented change. From being the hub of cricket bat-wielding boys, swooping the length and breadth of the ground with their fours and sixes, the ground has now made way for hundreds of women.

Every day, around 4.30 pm, women from the nearby slums take a two-hour break from their chores to assemble at the spot. With their pallus hastily tucked into their waist, they ride small distances, while carefully balancing on the 'loaned' two-wheelers.

The free training being the initial motivation, the heady rush of liberation has now pushed over 1,800 housewives, working professionals and college-going girls from the slums of Bhandup to register for the training class.*Students line up at a playground near Sanskruti Hall in Kokan Nagar, Bhandup for the riding class. Pic/Datta Kumbhar*

Their coach, politician Jitendra Ghadigaokar, who has taken on the task of training more than 200 women at a time, says he was inspired by the female lead character Archi from this year's Marathi blockbuster Sairat. The image of Archi flamboyantly riding a Bullet through the fields of a small village in Maharashtra, stuck with him. That's when he decided to launch the training school early in November.

In a span of one-and-a half months, Ghadigaokar has trained over 400 women from lower-income groups to ride the scooter. He is now busy training his second batch of 250 women bikers with the help of volunteers.

*Initial roadblocks*
When Ghadigaokar first advertised the programme, he received applications from over 1,800 women. Overwhelmed by the response, he decided to put the initiative on hold. "We could tell that they were eager to learn, but we didn't have enough bikes. We then loaned bikes from relatives, friends and colleagues," said Ghadigaokar, general secretary of North East Wing of the BJP.*Jitendra Ghadigaokar*

The students now train on 10 bikes. "We are increasing the number of bikes every day as more and more people are coming in," he added. Ghadigaokar said he launched the training programme to provide women from lower-income groups an opportunity to be mobile.

"These women cannot afford training from a regular motor school, whose fees range from R4,000 to R5,000. Also, when compared to women from other suburbs of Mumbai, you rarely see women from Bhandup head out alone. This bothered me," he said. During the 45-day training course, women are taught to drive, and also trained to write the exam and provided with a driving licence.

*The freedom to ride*
For Ghadigaokar, a bike-riding woman symbolises empowerment, self-confidence and economic equality. Homemaker Megha Mangesh Panchal (37), who lives in the Maharashtra Nagar slum, expresses this new-found confidence fittingly. "As a child, I remember being warned not to go out of the house after 6 pm.*A homemaker practises riding at a playground in Bhandup. Jitendra Ghadigaokar started the programme after watching Sairat's actor Rinku Rajguru ride a Bullet in the film. Pic/Datta Kumbhar*

My brother would accompany me everywhere," she recalls. Today, Panchal, who is a mother of two, is forced to rely on the men of the house. "Now, I will learn the bike, buy a scooter with my own money and prove my family that I am more than just a caretaker."

Panchal, who is halfway through the class, insists that learning the bike is important for all women. "Time and again, women are told that they can't do certain things. Just because I am a housewife, doesn't mean I cannot step outside my home. The bike is a means for me to take charge of my life," says Megha, who has already started saving up to buy her own scooter.*Megha Mangesh Panchal*

Sujata Rane (43), another trainee, who lives in Konkan Nagar and runs a catering business, said, "I am constantly nudged to quit the business. This makes me feel terrible. Learning the bike has given me wings."

Rinku Rajguru, the actress, who played Archi in Sairat, said she was happy that Ghadigaokar had taken a leaf out of the film. "I'm very happy that they are inspired by Archi. Hers was an inspiring character," she said.*Dr Nandita Shah, gender rights activist*

Dr Nandita Shah, gender rights activist and co-director Akshara, has commended the move. "Women surely feel empowered when they learn to ride a bike. Everything that is denied to us as secondary citizens, when offered to us, gives us a sense of exhilaration," said Shah. She also added, "The challenge is not only to bring them out in a bike rally, but create a space to challenge the patriarchal mindset even within their own community."

Even as its chief Uddhav Thackeray accompanied the Prime Minister for 'jal pujan' ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial, Shiv Sena on Saturday appeared unhappy with ally BJP, alleging that it has 'hijacked' the occasion to take political benefit.

It also took a swipe at BJP over the Ram Temple issue, saying it should admit its "failure" as it has not been able to build the promised temple in Ayodhya despite the huge majority in Lok Sabha.

"The BJP should not forget this memorial is a dream of every citizen of Maharashtra. The previous government (of Congress-NCP) also tried to start work on the memorial though it was unsuccessful for reasons best known to them," said Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande.

"When the memorial is being built with Government money, BJP should remember this (`jal pujan' or stone laying ceremony) is a Government programme and all parties of the 'Mahayuti' (grand alliance) should be treated with equal respect," she said.

Kayande said "the trend of BJP hijacking events, whenever it is in power, is in bad taste and does not go down well with public".

The BJP tried similar "antics" at the inauguration of Ram Mandir railway station here, where its workers shouted slogans in support of the Prime Minister, she said.

"Before elections, they showed people big dream of building a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which they have failed to do despite having absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. Now, they should accept their failure (for not building the temple)," the Sena spokesperson said.

Earlier, Modi performed 'jal pujan' in the Arabian Sea for the Rs 3,600-crore memorial dedicated to the 17th century Maratha warrior king, who is a revered figure in Maharashtra.

He was accompanied by Uddhav among others.

The party is hoping that the issue will work in its favour in run up to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls likely in early 2017.

Sena-BJP relationship has been strained ever since the two parties parted ways ahead of Maharashtra Assembly election in 2014. The two reunited post-election but Sena has been sulking since it has been reduced to a junior partner in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the Foundation for a Rs 3,600-crore grand memorial for Shivaji Maharaj off the city coast, an event that comes a few months ahead of the civic polls and amid tussle among parties to claim the legacy of the 17th century warrior king.

Modi, accompanied by select dignitaries, including Governor Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, sailed in a hovercraft from Girgaum Chowpatty beach in south Mumbai to reach near the memorial site, some 1.5km off the coast.

The PM performed the 'jalpujan' at the designated spot, symbolically marking the start of construction of the magnificent memorial in the Arabian Sea, which, according to the state government, is going to be the tallest such structure in the world.

Shivaji's descendants Udayanraje Bhosale and Sambhaji Raje (both Parliamentarians) were also on board the hovercraft.

Before the event, Fadnavis handed over to Modi a 'kalash' (vase) containing river waters and soil collected from all districts in Maharashtra.

When the hovercraft reached the memorial site, Modi immersed the 'kalash' in the sea. The PM also inspected a float depicting Shivaji Maharaj's coronation.

During the ceremony, Modi was seen talking to Thackeray, whose party, despite being an ally, has been a bitter critic of many of the BJP-led NDA Government's decisions, including demonetisation.

Earlier in the day, Sena alleged the BJP has "hijacked" the occasion to reap political benefit.

Vrinda Modi, one of the victims of the helicopter crash in Aarey Colony, died on Saturday morning, said doctors of the National Burns Centre in Airoli.

Dr S Keswani, from the burns centre, told Times Of India, "She had septicemia and we lost her around 10am on Saturday."

Vrinda and her husband, Ritesh, had taken a helicopter joyride to celebrate their wedding anniversay on December 11. The chopper crashed within four minutes of take-off.

While the pilot, P Mishra, died before reaching Seven Hills Hospital, Ritesh died few days later in the same hospital. Vrinda Modi, who suffered 50% burns, was shifted to the National Burns Centre thereafter.

Vrinda Modi had undergone two surgeries in the last fortnight, but her burns were so deep that doctors were planning to amputate her arms.

*Patalganga:* Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hinted at unleashing more radical reforms, saying his government will not shy away from taking difficult decisions that are in national interest and admitted the note ban caused "short-term pain".

Inaugurating a new educational and training campus of the Sebi-run National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) in this industrial township near Mumbai, Modi said "the government will unveil more long-term policies that are stable and sound" so as to sustain the higher economic growth rate.

"Our government will continue to follow sound and prudent economic policies and we will not take decisions for short-term political point scoring." Admitting that the demonetisation drive has caused some "short-term pains" to the public, Modi said this "will bring in benefits in the long-term".

Despite the lingering disagreements between the Centre and the states over the dual control of the GST mechanism, Modi expressed hope that the biggest tax reform the nation has seen till date will be a reality shortly. Claiming he has transformed the economy since assuming office over 30 months ago, the PM said when he took over the economy was in dire straits with high current account and fiscal deficits, near-double digit inflation and low forex reserves.

In spite of all difficulties, he said his government has improved these key metrics massively since assuming office in May 2014 and today the country is a bright spot in otherwise a gloomy global environment.

Even as the whole world is fighting a prolonged slowdown, "India is being seen as a bright spot with growth projected to be highest amongst the large economies", he said. Modi said advancing budget presentation will help improve productivity by ensuring adequate resources to all productive sectors of the economy.

Lauding Sebi for facilitating a large number of IPOs this year and helping the capital markets to grow, he said the financial markets are very important for a fast-growing economy. He underlined the need for developing a robust corporate bond markets so that banks funds can be utilised for other less organised sectors.

Modi asked market watchdog Sebi and Finance Ministry to enable municipalities to tap markets. Stock markets should help in raising capital for productive purposes while the bond market could become a source of long-term infra finance.

A day after a headless and naked body of a 23-year-old man Brenden Gonsalves was found from a field in Aarey Colony, the police formed eight special teams to investigate the murder.

Till now, the cops have no clue about the reason behind the murder. Meanwhile, Brenden’s family performed the final rites at St Joseph Church in Oshiwara.

According to police sources, last Monday morning, Brenden went out as usual for a morning walk along with his dog.

He returned after some time and went out again around 7:15am. The footage of the CCTV installed at the entrance of Aarey Colony shows Brenden entering the area but not returning.

During investigation it was also revealed that on Sunday night he had gone out with a friend Laxman Singh to have juice at a nearby stall.

On being interrogated, Singh revealed that Brenden was going through some kind of tension.

*Property dispute?*
Police said that Brenden’s call data record reveals that a close relative was the last person to call him. It has also been found out that the deceased’s family had some property dispute with a couple of relatives.

An officer from Aarey police station said that the murderer slashed Brenden’s wrists before and after killing him as they have five cut marks. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a family member said Brenden might have been killed over personal rivalry or with the help of black magic.

Good news is in store for trekkers and tourists visiting the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in Pune to see Maharashtra’s state animal, the Giant Indian Squirrel. The state Forest Department (FD) has started nature trails to promote the animal and create awareness about the role of locals, nature lovers and the department in wildlife conservation. Sunil Limaye, chief conservator of forests, Pune (Wildlife) said, “The Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is not only home to the Giant Indian Squirrel but also has a rich biodiversity, and we want nature lovers to visit the sanctuary and explore the same. Four nature trails have been organised wherein naturalists will accompany groups and inform them about the biodiversity found here.” As per a past survey conducted by the Zoological Society of India, the 130 square-km sanctuary is home to 529 species of animals, including 19 endemic species of Indian birds.

These trails are not just aiding the sanctuary, but will help the locals too. “We are involving the local villagers in the trail since we want them to benefit from the trails as well. The revenue generated from the trails is being shared with villagers that provide food to the people coming for them,” added Limaye.

The modus operandi of the perpetrators behind a baby-selling racket — which was busted on December 12 — has been revealed. The mastermind, and arrested accused Asha Thakur would con street dwellers into parting with their children saying that she had several ‘high-class’ clients who would pay lakhs for their baby.

She would coax them into the deal saying they could make some money by selling their baby and as for another child, they could have one anytime they wanted.

*Also Read: Yet another baby-selling racket busted by Mumbai police, four women held*

Yogita Sale, another arrested accused, told the police during interrogation that Asha convinced her to bring babies for her, which she would sell to those who need them and get lots of money in return. Yogita, who was stuck in an unhappy household with her in-laws, wanted a separate home for herself and her husband. She readily gave into Asha’s plan and stole the baby of her cousins Mohammad Arif Khan and Yasmin Khan on December 4.

*Stole my baby, ran*
Narrating what happened prior to the kidnapping, Yasmin said, “My mother took my baby out as Yogita asked to play with her. Then, my mother diverted my attention to other things and just then, Yogita stole my baby and ran off.”

Yasmin and Mohammed registered a complaint on December 5 but couldn’t find their one and half-year-old son Ahmad Jafar Khan or Yogita for another week. Yasmin told cops she suspected Yogita of stealing Ahmad, after which cops started looking for her and found her on December 12. She was also captured on CCTV with Ahmad outside Mankhurd station.

*Read Story: Mumbai: Mankhurd police recover four more babies sold in racket*

Meanwhile, after further probe into the case, cops found that the couples who had bought the babies were taking utmost care of them. Upon being asked why they paid R2-4 lakh to Asha for the children when several NGOs give babies for adoption without charging a single penny, one of the couples said Asha told them she’s taking the money for legal procedures and the baby’s mother.

*Three teams formed*
DCP Zone 6 Shahaji Umap told mid-day, “We have approached the child welfare committee to look into why couples are opting for this way of adopting a child, what are the problems faced by them in adopting the baby legally. The illegal adoptions in different states is helping this racket enjoy the money after selling the babies.”

He added, “We have formed three teams to find more accused who are involved in the network and trying our best to rescue other babies who were sold by them.”

mid-day looks at the vitals of these projects that will shape the future of the city and the surrounding metropolitan region.*To decongest Kalanagar Junction, the Kalanagar-Bandra flyover has been planned*

*On the road*
*Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL):* This Rs 17,900 crore sea bridge has been at the planned stage for nearly a decade now. It will connect the ports of MbPT and JNPT, and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, apart from its proximity to the new airport. The 22-km-long bridge is expected to be ready within five years once the work begins.

*Kalanagar Junction-Bandra flyover:* It will be 1.9 km-long and start from Bandra-Worli Sea Link end (BWSL) and go on to BKC and Kalanagar with two lanes each. The R163 crore flyover will decongest Kalanagar Junction by 67 per cent, besides connecting Sion and Dharavi with BWSL.

*Elevated road from LBS Marg flyover in Kurla to Vakola:* This would be 6 km-long and built at a cost of R480 crore. It will provide signal-free connectivity to WEH and Bandra-Kurla Complex from EEH, as well as decongest Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, thus reducing travel time by 30 minutes.*On Western Railway, the Bandra-Virar line has undergone several changes*

*What’s on track for railways?*
The government and Indian Railways will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for three major rail projects. Out of these, two have been in trouble for nearly five years now — the CST-Panvel and the Bandra-Virar elevated rail lines. The third one is new in the list, the Virar-Vasai-Diva-Panvel rail corridor.

*CST-Panvel line:* This is important for connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, a fast line for the 10 lakh-odd commuters travelling to the satellite city. The R14,600 crore corridor is also likely to connect to the proposed Navi Mumbai airport.

*Bandra-Virar line:* This one has been courting controversy and undergone changes. It was to first start from Oval Maidan, which then became from Andheri till Virar. Finally, the railways has agreed to start this R20,000 crore corridor from Bandra.

*Virar-Vasai-Diva-Panvel corridor:* This is a vital rail network pegged at R9,000 crore that would connect all the three lines — Western, Central and Harbour. It will also give scope to the government to increase commercial spaces in this belt in a bid to reduce congestion in Mumbai.

*MUTP-III*
A continuation of MUTP-1 and II, it is being handled by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, which is a joint venture between the state government and Indian Railways. The World Bank is funding it partly.

*Airoli-Kalwa elevated corridor:* This Rs 428 crore line will connect Thane with its suburbs as well as help in connecting people to the existing trans-harbour rail line.

*Panvel-Karjat corridor:* This Rs 2,618 crore suburban rail network is again important for the growth of Mumbai’s metropolitan region. It will connect Panvel and Karjat, the two ends of Main and Harbour lines of Central Railway. More important are the jobs generated in these extended suburbs, especially with the new airport coming up.

*Quadrupling Virar-Dahanu line:* At present there are two rail lines between Virar and Dahanu, used by both suburban and long-distance trains. At present, nearly 80,000 people use the local trains, while scores travel daily towards Surat and beyond. The two additional lines will allow the railways to separate the suburban and long-distance networks.

*AC local project:* The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) plans to procure 47 air-conditioned rakes for the city. The 12-coach trains will be divided into two vestibules of six coaches each. The cost of each AC coach is expected to range from Rs 6.5 crore to Rs 10 crore.

“If the coaches are like Metro rail, the cost will be Rs 10 crore for each, but if they are like the ones being tested currently, they will cost Rs 6.5 crore,” said an MRVC official*Metros in the metro*

*DN Nagar to Mankhurd (Metro-II) corridor:* This 23.5 km-long line will be built at a cost of R10,986 crore. It will have 22 stations and run eight-coach trains. The MMRDA expects daily ridership of 8.09 lakh in 2021. It will also have interchanges with Metro-I, Metro-III, Metro-IV, Monorail and suburban trains.

*Christmas at the Bhupathi-Dutta home*
Even as plastic Christmas trees, hollies mistletoes, reindeer and Santas flood the market, a Bandra residence is bathed in a burst of Christmassy colours sans all the artificial festive paraphernalia.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Lara Dutta have a winter garden in full bloom and the thoughtfully arranged plants potted poinsettia, maranta, palms, spider and money plants — in hues of reds and greens look every bit festive. Little did we know that in a household of eclectic tastes such as tennis and acting, gardening had some fans, too.

*Gandhi for millennials*
Here’s a new-age way to learn about Mahatma Gandhi. Tales Of Young Gandhi (Harper Collins) is a breezy 200-pager dotted with cool illustrations (Uttam Sinha) and chat blurbs that chronicles his early life in a graphic novel style. The book marks the writing debut of Delhi-born Janhavi Prasada, who works as a peace activist in the field of technology.*A panel from the book*

Like millions others, she was deeply impacted by the icon when she first read his autobiography, The Story Of My Experiments With Truth, and decided to retell his story for the new generation. The illustrations also include visual content that Prasada collected over eight years of travel to Porbandar, London and South Africa.

*Saina is a smash hit*
Champions are trained in childhood, and a rendezvous with achievers at a young age often goes a long way.

For the junior athletes of Olympic Gold Quest, a non-profit organisation with a mission to help Indian athletes win Olympic gold medals, it was one such occasion yesterday.

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal along with Prakash Padukone and her coach, U Vimal Kumar, interacted with the young guns training at the organisation, where Nehwal told them all about transitioning effectively from the junior to the senior level.

*Finally something for the man in queue*
It’s that time of the year when publications take a stock of the months gone by and list noteworthy achievements across fields. They pick their sportsman of the year, businessman of the year, book of the year — and person of the year, which is reserved for the personality whose achievement is too big to be confined to a particular area.

In its 50th year, the Kannada daily, Kannada Prabha, too recently announced its person of the year. On its cover is a flustered, helpless-looking elderly man, his eyes full of questions. The Man in Queue has experienced a lot this year. We hope this recognition marks the beginning of the end of all those troubles.

*Because all kids know is love*
When the world seems to be enveloped in hatred, it is scenes like these that reassure us that better days are still ahead.

Actress Shruti Seth recently posted this adorable picture with this note: ‘When humans are finding it hard to love each other, my baby girl is spreading Christmas love even to mannequins.

May we all be nicer in 2017.’ Well, that just about sums up our wishlist for the coming year, too.

*Pune:* “Don’t worry mother, within six months I will be out,” said a 30-year-old suspended judicial magistrate (First class) to his mother when the Pune district court yesterday held him guilty in a sexual abuse and molestation case, and sentenced him to three years' rigorous imprisonment. The case was filed by his neighbour in 2014.

Special Sessions Judge Mangala Dhote found Nagraj Shinde guilty of offences punishable under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). He was also fined Rs 10,000. Shinde has two daughters. He was suspended in 2013 for misconduct when he was posted as the judicial magistrate (First Class) in Khandala court in Satara district.

The prosecution’s case was that the survivor, Shinde’s neighbour, stayed with her parents and elder sister and brother. The incident was registered with Bharti Vidyapeeth police station on July, 30 2014. At the time, Shinde’s wife had gone to her parents’ house for the delivery of her second child.

Shinde assured the girl that he would enroll her into a good coaching class and sexually assaulted her before threatening her with dire consequences, if she disclosed the matter. The CCTV footage in the society the day she was seen entering Shinde’s house, turned to be the crucial evidence in securing his conviction.

Special Public Prosecutor Pratap Pardeshi examined 11 prosecution witnesses. He said, “The accused, Shinde, is in the field of law and an educated man. His act is also an offence against society.” Shinde himself pleaded his case and examined nine other witnesses.

*Kolkata:* Days after a row erupted over the army drill at toll plazas in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday objected to the Centre’s move to deploy CRPF personnel for providing security to Income Tax officials during search operations in the state. Banerjee demanded that the decision be immediately revoked.

Describing the decision as “unconstitutional, illegal and against all principles of cooperative federalism”, Banerjee shot off a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in which she said deployment of any central police force to any state can only be done at the request of the state government.

*'Deployment as per law'*
However, the investigation wing of the Income Tax (IT) Department said the deployment of CRPF personnel during searches is as per the law.

“The number of search operations being carried out now have increased manifold and this is why we are taking help of CRPF personnel,” a senior official of the IT investigation wing said.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/dec/Supreme-Court-s.jpg

*New Delhi:* The Supreme Court yesterday said it would next month hear a plea seeking quashing of a provision of the Income Tax (IT) Act on tax exemption to political parties on receiving voluntary contributions.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and L Nageswara Rao said there was no urgency in hearing the plea as the law has been in force for over 50 years and added that it would take it up on January 11.

“You are challenging a provision of the IT Act which is there since 1960s. What is the urgency? Let the matter come up before the court after vacations. This Act is going on for over 50 years,” the bench told petitioner advocate M L Sharma.

Sharma urged the court to hear the matter yesterday itself and claimed that on December 16, the government had declared that no investigation will be carried out against political parties' accounts on deposit of old demonetised notes as per the tax exemption given under section 13A of the IT Act. He said old currency notes were being deposited in the accounts of political parties and “the problem is that they would withdraw the money”.

*‘Note ban economic robbery’*
Escalating the attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi yesterday said his note ban decision is not a fight against black money or corruption but is an “economic robbery.’

Addressing a public rally at the University Campus College Grounds at Almora, the Congress vice president said his party wants to eradicate corruption and if “Modiji takes any step against the menace, Congress party will lend its hundred per cent support.”

*New Delhi:* Najeeb Jung yesterday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a day after springing a surprise by tendering resignation as Delhi’s Lt Governor even as he said that he had wanted to quit earlier but was asked by the PM to continue.

Jung reached the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) at South Block here around 11.30 AM and spent a little over an hour inside. Sources said it was a courtesy meeting. Yesterday, in his brief resignation statement, Jung had thanked Modi for his help and cooperation.

Rejecting speculation that he quit as pressure was mounting on him, Jung was quoted as saying by NDTV that there is no politics behind his decision and that he wanted to quit earlier as well.

“I had offered to resign as I had been appointed by the previous UPA government, but the PM asked me to carry on. After three years, I requested the PM to relieve me but he asked me to carry on,” he said.

“After three and a half years, I requested the PM again on Tuesday that I would like to resign on personal grounds,” Jung was quoted as saying.

Jung also said that he would like to write a book.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to create a selfie gallery at CST has hit a roadblock — the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has turned down the proposal to construct a viewing gallery outside the BMC headquarters, raising the concern that it would obstruct the view of the building as well as CST.*An artist’s impression of the selfie gallery planned for the heritage sector*

The plan is part of CST’s complete revamp plan about which mid-day had reported first (September 29).

*'Too high'*
The proposal was tabled before the heritage committee on Thursday for its approval as the location falls in the heritage precinct.

An MHCC official said, “We were not happy with the plan, as the proposed gallery is high and will obstruct the view of the BMC building. Hence, we have sent it back to the local ward office and asked it to make changes in a way that the existing beauty of the heritage precinct won’t be affected or obstructed, and then submit it again before the committee.”

According to a source, the existing ventilator shaft is about five feet high. The proposed gallery will be constructed above the shaft level with three feet high railings, completely blocking the view of the civic body’s headquarters.

On Thursday, Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray tweeted photos of the proposed viewing gallery in the heritage precinct of the BMC head office.

*For selfie enthusiasts*
In September, A ward (CST, Colaba) office had proposed to construct an elevated gallery with glass facades above one of the ventilation shafts of the pedestrian subway in front of the CST. Recently, a proposal of the R80 lakh gallery project was approved by the Standing Committee.

*New Delhi:* Sadhus and sanyasis can now mention names of their spiritual gurus instead of biological parents under new passport rules announced here today which also eliminate the mandatory requirement of the birth certificate as the proof of date of birth (DOB).

The rules, which were announced by Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh, also provides a provision for government servants, who are not able to get "no objection certificate" from their respective ministries/departments. In order to streamline, liberalise and ease the process of issue of passport, the ministry has taken a number of steps in the realm of passport policy which is expected to benefit the citizens of India applying for a passport, Singh noted.

In case of proof of DOB while filing application, it has now been decided that all applicants of passports can submit any one of the documents --transfer/School leaving/ Matriculation Certificate, PAN card, Aadhaar Card/E-Aadhaar having the DOB of applicant, copy of the extract of the service record of the applicant, driving licence, Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) or LIC policy bond.

Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births & Deaths or the Municipal Corporation or any other prescribed authority whosoever has been empowered under the Registration of Birth & Deaths Act, 1969 to register the birth of a child born in India can also be given as DOB proof. As per the extant statutory provisions of the Passport Rules, 1980, all the applicants born on or after January 26, 1989, had to mandatory submit the birth certificate as the DOB proof to get a passport.

The government has also accepted the demand by the sadhus/sanyasis that they should be allowed to write names of their gurus instead of names of their parents, Singh said, adding but they have to provide at least one public document such as EPIC, PAN card, Adhaar Card, etc wherein the name of the guru has been recorded against the column(s) for parent(s) name(s).

In case of government servants, who are not able to obtain the Identity Certificate/ No-Objection Certificate from their employer concerned and intend to get the passport on urgent basis can now get the passport by submitting a self- declaration that he/she has given prior Intimation letter to his/her employer informing that he/she was applying for an ordinary passport.

A report of a inter-ministerial committee with members from MEA and Women and Child Development ministry to examine issues pertaining to applications where mother/child has insisted that the name of the father should not be mentioned in the passport and also relating to children with single parent and to adopted children has also been accepted.

Based on the report, policy changes have been made which include no mandatory requirement of a marriage certificate for married applicants as also provide name of the only one parent and not both. This would enable single parents to apply for passports for their children and to also issue passports where the name of either the father or the mother is not required to be printed at the request of the applicant.

Under the new rules, total number of Annexes prescribed in the Passport Rule, 1980, has been brought down to 9 from the present 15 and all the annexes that are required to be given by the applicants would be self-declaration on plain paper.

"No attestation/swearing by/before any Notary/Executive Magistrate/First Class Judicial Magistrate would be henceforth necessary," as per the new rules, which also do not require the applicant to provide the name of her/his spouse in case of separated or divorced persons.

Such applicants would not be required to provide even the Divorce Decree. Orphaned children who do not have any proof of DOB such as Birth Certificate or the Matriculation Certificate or the declaratory court order, may now submit a declaration given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on official letter head of the organisation confirming the DOB of the applicant.

For children not born out of wedlock, the applicant should submit only self-declaration form while submitting the application and in case of issue of passport to in-country domestically-adopted children, submission of the registered\ adoption deed would no longer be required.

Asked about the rules applicable to get a passport for a child born through surrogacy, Chief Passport Officer Arun K Chatterjee said there was a specific list of documents required as per the Indian Council For Medical Research regulations.

Since the bill dealing with surrogacy is still pending before the Lok Sabha, changes can only be carried out after it is passed, he added. Singh also said the necessary notifications would soon be published in the Official Gazette to give effect to these changes. Instructions are also being issued to the Passport Issuing Authorities in India and abroad on these revised regulations.

"MEA expects that the changes in the Passport Rules would further ease the process for passport applicants in getting their Passport. "At the same time, it would enable this Ministry to continue to deliver passport related services to the citizens in a timely, transparent, more accessible, reliable manner and in a comfortable environment through streamlined processes and committed, trained and motivated workforce," Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

*Mumbai:* Tata Sons Interim Chairman Ratan Tata on Friday said attempts have been made to damage his and Tata Group's reputation. "Over the last two months there has been a definite move to damage my personal reputation and the reputation of this great group - the Tata group," Tata told the Tata Chemicals' Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held here on Friday.

"And these days are very lonely because the newspapers are full of attacks, most of them unsubstantiated but nevertheless very painful. And coming here this week with all the shareholders, I have been so moved emotionally and deeply touched by the warmth and the support and the affection that they have shown," he said, adding he could not leave without "expressing my deepest gratitude" to the shareholders for their "overwhelming and remarkable" support.

Tata said that the group has been based on governance and fair play and he was confident the truth will prevail "however painful it may be". The EGM was convened to decide whether or not to remove industrialist Nusli Wadia, an Independent Director of the company, from the Board.

The original was to take for the removal of Tata Sons' ousted Chairman Cyrus Mistry and Walia but the former had voluntarily quit. Tata Sons' board ousted Mistry on October 24 and appointed Ratan Tata as the Interim Chairman. Wadia's support for Mistry has led several Tata Group companies to call for their respective EGMs to decide whether or not to remove him from their respective Boards.

Earlier in the day, Wadia had made an impassioned appeal to the company's shareholders to vote with their "conscience" during the firm's EGM, adding that he has chosen not to attend the company's EGM, as the recent meetings of other Tata companies have been "inappropriately and shamefully stage managed".

"What is at stake now is not whether I am removed or not but the fate of the very institution of the Independent Director that has been created in law and by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders," he said.

The letter elaborated how Wadia, as well as some other Board members, had expressed concern about the fundamental issues involved in the overall arrangement of the deals. The development comes a day after Wadia was removed from Tata Motors' Board of Directors.

Tata Motors' in a regulatory filing made to the BSE said that over 69 per cent of total shareholders of the company voted during Thursday's EGM, and out of them, 1,517 or 71.20 per cent of votes favoured the resolution to remove Wadia while 1,037 shareholders, or 28.80 per cent, were opposed.

In response, the Wadia Group in a statement said that non-promoter shareholders had backed Wadia. Wadia, meanwhile, on Friday filed a criminal defamation suit against Tata Sons, Ratan Tata and its Directors, barely a week after he filed a defamation suit seeking Rs 3,000 crore as damages from the Tata Group and others.

Wadia had also approached the Bombay High Court, which on December 16 declined relief to minority shareholders of three Tata Group companies, who had sought restraint on promoters from voting at EGMs on the resolution to remove him as an Independent Director.

*Mumbai:* Tata Chemicals on Saturday said that a majority of its shareholders at its extra-ordinary general meeting (EGM) on Friday voted to remove Industrialist Nusli Wadia as an Independent Director of the company.

According to a Tata Chemicals' regulatory filing, over 58 per cent of total shareholders of the company voted during Friday's EGM. Of the total number of shareholders who voted -- 945 or 75.67 per cent of votes -- favoured the resolution to remove Wadia from the Board of Directors.

In contrast, 318 shareholders, or 24.33 per cent of votes cast were opposed to the resolution to remove Wadia. "Wadia was not present and as per his request, his letter dated December 22, 2016 addressed to the members was read out by the Company Secretary," the company said in its regulatory filing.

"On an invitation by the Chairman, lshaat Hussain representing the requisitionist, Tata Sons spoke at the meeting clarifying certain issues raised by Wadia." Tata Sons Interim Chairman Ratan Tata also spoke at the EGM. He said that attempts have been made to damage his and Tata Group's reputation.

"Over the last two months there has been a definite move to damage my personal reputation and the reputation of this great group," Tata said in his address to the EGM. "And these days are very lonely because the newspapers are full of attacks, most of them unsubstantiated but nevertheless very painful. Industrialist Nusli N Wadia has filed a criminal defamation case against Tata Sons, its interim chairman Ratan Tata and some directors for alleged “defamatory and offending” contents in a special resolution moved to seek his removal from three Tata Group firms.

Wadia, who has been accused of siding with ousted Tata Group chairman Cyrus P Mistry, filed the defamation suit in the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai.

Tata Sons' special resolution to shareholders seeking Wadia’s removal as independent director on board of Tata Chemicals, Tata Motors and Tata Steel has “caused severe prejudice to the reputation and goodwill,” the chairman of Britannia

Industries said in the suit. This, he claimed, also “affected his status as an independent director in various other companies and will continue to have a cascading effect” on his reputation and goodwill in business circles within India and abroad.

He named Anil Naik, Chairman of Larsen & Toubro and Tanya Godrej Dubash, Executive Director of Godrej Group, as witnesses. Others named as witness include Subodh Bhargava, independent director of Tata Motors and Tata Steel and Vinesh Jairath, independent director at Tata Motors.

The next time you see Salman Khan on the big screen, he won’t be fighting any goons. Instead, the actor will take on one of the city’s worst villains – open defecation.

*Also read: Salman Khan starts his campaign to stop open defecation in Mumbai*

As the face of the BMC’s anti-open defecation drive, Salman will make a short film of 2-3 minutes on the menace. Like the government’s anti-tobacco and pulse polio drive ads in the past, this short film will also be screened for cinema audiences before their movie begins. In addition, the ad will also be posted on social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube to reach the masses.*Salman Khan*

A senior civic official said, “We have given a script to Salman. He agreed to make the film at his expense and shoot it as soon as possible. In the film, Salman will appeal to people to not defecate in the open, and use the toilets to make the city clean.”

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A-ward, Kiran Dighavkar, who is also in charge of BMC’s Swacch Bharat Mission, said, “The short film will be shown in the city’s movie theatres. We will also upload it on social media sites to make sure that it reaches more people. This will help in spreading awareness against open defecation.”

*Birthday present*
After Salman was recently roped in as the brand ambassador for this cause, the BMC has also decided to declare Mumbai an open defecation free (ODF) city on his birthday tomorrow.

“Earlier, the plan was to declare it on December 30, but since Salman is the face of the campaign and his birthday is on December 27, we have decided to do it on the same day,” said an official.

Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta confirmed, “We are ensuring that there are enough toilets available at places where citizens defecate in open. Once this is done, we can declare the city open defecation free.”

The civic body has identified 118 such areas where open defecation is common.

An official said, “After the declaration is done, the BMC will write to the union ministry of urban development department to inform them about it. Then a team of Quality Control of India (QCI) that works under the ministry will visit the city and check the civic body’s claim. After finding the claim true, the team will certify the Mumbai as ODF.”*5*

In a murder reminiscent of the chilling daylight killing of 24-year-old Infosys techie S Swathi, Antara Das (23), a software engineer was stabbed to death with a sharp weapon outside her office in Pune on Friday. Her father Debanand Das says he only found out about the stalker after she died.

Debananda Das, father of slain Pune techie Antara Das, says he got to know about a boy who’d been harassing his ‘intelligent and brave’ daughter only after she was killed.

*Also read - Pune: 23-year-old techie brutally stabbed to death*

“I am shocked. My daughter was an intelligent and brave girl. But there was a boy who was harassing her while she was studying Javascript in Bangalore, but I was unaware of him until I spoke to my younger daughter [after Antara’s death], who said his name is Santosh Kumar and he harasses Antara,” Debananda told mid-day.

Antara Das was a software engineer working for Capgemini in Pune. She was barely 500 metres away from her office at 8.30pm on Friday, when she was attacked with a sharp weapon by a man dressed in a ‘blue and black t-shirt’, according to an eyewitness. Das hails from Behala in West Bengal.

*The boy from her class*
Antara’s parents came to Pune from Kolkata on Sunday and performed her last rites in the city. “She’d completed her B. Tech and in April, she was in Bangalore pursuing a course on Javascript. On April 26, she told me she’d received a job offer from Capgemini and was going to go to Pune with a friend on April 28. I booked their train tickets and a hotel room. Later, she said that another boy from her class was also insisting on coming with them as he had a job interview.” Antara then moved to Pune for her job, but couldn’t escape from her harasser, a fact Debananda learnt only after his daughter’s demise.

“Later, Sanchari Das, her colleague and roommate also told me about this boy who’d been harassing Antara a lot. Had I known earlier, such an incident could have been averted,” the father added.

*Lying on the footpath*
Antara was taken to the hospital after Satyendra Sinha, an eyewitness, spotted her lying on a footpath. Her attacker had fled from the spot. “I was on my way home from work around 8.30 pm when I heard a girl yelling while she was fighting with a boy. I parked my vehicle to help her but found her lying on the footpath. I thought she’d either fallen down or been pushed forcefully. I immediately called out to passers by for help. Just then, a car stopped and I took her to the hospital. As it was dark, I couldn’t see the boy, but he was wearing a black and blue stripped t-shirt,” said Sinha. Antara was taken to the Dhanashree Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. After this, Sinha immediately went to the Dehu road police station.

*Cop speak*
BB Mujawar, deputy superintendent of police said, “ The girl used to travel in the office vehicle but on Friday, she preferred leaving on her own, as mentioned in the office records. After the murder, her bag and belongings were safe.”
Jay Jadhav, Pune’s rural superintendent of police said, “As per the post mortem report, the death is due to stab injuries on her neck and forehead. As per her parent’s statement the murder could be because of the fallout of a one-sided love affair. We are probing on similar lines and other aspect took. A robbery angle was ruled out as the valuables she was carrying were not missing.”

Following a wave of criticism for trapping a leopard from Aarey Milk Colony without any provocation from the wild cat, the Forest Department has announced that it will soon release the animal back in its natural habitat.

Chief Conservator of Forest, Thane (Territorial), KP Singh confirmed: “The leopard that was trapped from Aarey Milk Colony will be released in its natural habitat at the earliest.”

There has not been a single incident of man-animal conflict in nearly three years, and after the leopard was trapped on Friday, there was strong backlash from the wildlife conservationist community. If anything, Aarey has been held up as an example for the entire world, demonstrating how leopards can co-exist alongside humans in perfect harmony.

An image of a leopard prowling near tribal settlements in Aarey recently won a highly acclaimed award from the Natural History Museum.

The recently made BBC documentary, Planet Earth II also covered this remarkable co-existence.

Sources from SGNP told this newspaper that the big cat, trapped from Mataipada in Aarey, is a sub-adult male and a micro chip has already been fitted in its body. “The leopard is completely healthy and is fit for release,” said an official.

Conservationists pointed out that the leopard trapping was in violation of the guidelines prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), according to which the permission to trap a leopard can only be given by the PCCF-Nagpur office, and only when there is no there option but to trap the animal.

Christmas began in tragedy at the Sydenham management college, as the pride of the institute — its library — was gutted in a blaze. By the end of the day, however, the college also witnessed the generosity of Christmas spirit as Sydenham alumni instantly came to the rescue with a donation of Rs 5 lakh to arrange for new books so students can continue their academics.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. Fire control received the call at around 5.30 am, after which four fire engines and seven water tankers were sent to the library at Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE).

A senior official said, “By 7.30 am, the fire was brought under control. However, the books and furniture inside library was flammable material, so there was more damage.”

College officials estimate that about 80% of the books have been irreparably damaged. Not all is lost, however.*The fire brigade got the call around 5.30 am and the blaze was brought under control in about two hours*

*Christmas miracle*
For one, no one was hurt in the incident; the students are all away on Christmas break and because it was in the wee hours of Sunday, no one else was there when the fire broke out. Equally miraculous is the fact that the institute has managed to salvage its most precious collection of Harvard Business Review (HBR) journals, which were housed in special vaults (called compactors) that kept them safe from the flames.

Dr Manoj Bhide, director in charge of the institute said, “It was a high-tech library with 16,500 books on management education. While most of the books are destroyed, we are glad that our rare books, which were kept in compactors, are safe. These HBR journals are assets for any management institute. Although these books got wet, we are glad that after drying, they are still in readable condition.”

“The library is certainly a very important section of any institute, and this fire is a huge loss for us. But we are confident of getting support from the alumni, the university, as well as the government in restoring the library,” he added.

*Trial by fire*
The college still has tough times ahead. Students will return from holiday on January 3, when they will be expected to get back to their grinding academic schedule. Without books, however, the students will be handicapped.
Moreover, since it is a government institution, restoring the library could take a long time because of all the paperwork and official procedures to follow.

In this trial by fire, it is the Sydenham students who saved the day. While current students rushed to the campus to help out as soon as they heard about the blaze, the Sydenham Institute of Management Alumni Association (SIMAA) too have pitched in with a much-needed donation of Rs 5 lakh, so the college can at least arrange for the crucial books that students will need.

Meanwhile, Mumbai University has also extended its support by opening its library to SIMSREE students. Aashish Pawaskar, assistant professor at SIMSREE and one of the directors of SIMAA, said, “Mumbai University will now allow our students to use the Churchgate campus library whenever required until our library is restored.”*Alumni speak*

*Ashish Bhasin, founding chairman of alumni association*
‘It is an unfortunate incident and the alumni have decided to help the institute. Our primary aim is to create a makeshift library so that students are not inconvenienced. The college is going to give us a list of books urgently required. Once the repairs begin, we will extend further support’

*Govind D, member of the alumni association*
‘Being a government institute, there will be a process to follow before the repair work can finally be done. But when students get back to institute after the break, they cannot be left stranded. To make books available for them from day one, we are immediately donating Rs 5 lakh. Several of our members are already writing to us to express their willingness to help fund the restoration work as well’

*Documents damaged*
In the next few days, a report will be prepared on how much information was lost in the blaze. “We are working on collating the loss. We have a software in which we had kept record of which books we had. The report will be ready in a few days,” said institute director Dr Manoj Bhide. Students, however, are worried because the library also housed some of their personal documents, like certificates and marksheets. “The library did have some original documents belonging to students. But we are going to help the students in getting these back from the concerned authorities,” Bhide added.

*New Delhi:* Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a Santa on the Christmas Day and announced two schemes to promote digital transactions and banking to make India a cashless economy. For the next 100 days from Sunday, he said, some 15,000 people making e-payments will get Rs 1,000 cash back in a daily lucky draw.

And a weekly draw can win cashless transactions prize money running into lakhs of rupees, Modi said in the year's last edition of his monthly radio broadcast 'Mann Ki Baat'.

"On the day of Christmas, Indians will get the benefit of two schemes -- Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana and Lucky Grahak Yojana. It will last for 100 days. As such, crores of rupees will be distributed to lakhs of people," Modi said.

Traders going cashless with online payments would get an exemption in Income Tax, he announced.

And the lure doesn't stop here.

"On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti (B.R. Ambedkar's birthday) -- April 14, 2017, we will be conducting a bumper draw in which the winning prize will be in crores (of rupees)."

Strongly defending his widely criticised November 8 demonetisation decision, which has led to an unprecedented cash crunch across the country, Modi acknowledged inconvenience caused to people due to the ban of R 500 and Rs 1,000 currency bills.

"People are going through pain, hardship. Who won't feel the pain? I am also feeling the pain as much as people are," Modi said.

Modi has been severely criticised by the opposition at home and renowned economists abroad over the disruptive move to recall 86 per cent of the total currency in circulation, ostensibly aimed at curbing corruption and black money in the country.

The decision has caused economic upheaval and forced people in large numbers across India to wait for hours in serpentine queues outside banks and ATMs to withdraw new currency or deposit the spiked notes.

More than six weeks after the move, people are still struggling to manage even their daily expenses because the Reserve Bank of India has been able to supply enough new notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 to replace the now invalid currency notes.

Modi took a dig at the opponents and thanked the people for not heeding to the "rumours".

"I congratulate people for not only enduring pain but also for giving appropriate answers to those who tried to mislead them."

Modi said he had received an overwhelming response over demonetisation. There were three kinds of suggestions, he noted, he got from the people.

"Some people have written about the problems, inconvenience citizens were facing. In the second category, people have stressed on the good work, (which is) in the interest of the nation. They also spoke about irregularities in some parts and how new ways of corruption are being devised."

"In the third category, people have supported (the move). In addition, they have asked to continue the war against black money, corruption. They have asked for stricter steps to weed out corruption, black money," Modi said.

He also took a note of parliamentary disruptions that led to the entire winter session washed away in noisy protests by both opposition as well as treasury benches.

He said he wanted a debate in Parliament on donations being given to political parties but it could not take place.

"I wish there was a discussion in Parliament on funding for political parties," he said, scoffing at rumours that there were different rules for funding of political parties.

In his monthly radio address to the nation 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi on the occasion of Christmas said 15,000 people who use digital payment modes will be given a reward of Rs 1,000 each by a lucky draw. This amount will be transferred to their accounts.

Kharghar police on Monday arrested Pravin Nikam and his wife Priyanka, owner of the Purva Playschool under the charges of Attempt to Murder. A ten-month-old infant was allegedly assaulted by Nikam's employee Afsana Shaikh in the creche premises in November.

The Bombay High Court had earlier rejected anticipatory bail application of Priyanka.

The police on Monday produced the couple in a court after which the couple were sent to two days police custody.

"While Priyanka is owner of the creche where the infant was beaten, her husband is also associated with the creche, hence he too was arrested," said Assistant Police Commissioner, Prakash Nilewad.

The caretaker/maid, Afsana Sheikh, who allegedly beat up a ten-month-old baby girl, was earlier arrested and is currently inside women's jail. A CCTV video clip showing Sheikh beating the girl had gone viral on social media last month.

The Police have registered a case of attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of Juvenile Justice Act against Nikam, her husband and Sheikh.

Police had earlier arrested Nikam under section 324 of IPC (voluntarily causing hurt), but she was able to get a bail. Later, the police booked her under the charge of attempt to murder.

The 8-hour work shift announcement by police chief Datta Padsalgikar last month was a challenge for the police. And, stations have been trying their best to follow the chief's orders, working around a huge staff shortage. mid-day surveyed 5 stations to assess how well this was working.

After police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar ordered that all city police stations implement eight-hour shifts for its personnel, 42 of the 94 complied till December 20. Shortage of manpower, however, has meant that the new style of functioning isn't complete yet — the duty hours of detection staff at each station are still beyond the stipulated period.

*'Detection is tough'*
Here, personnel work for 12 hours once a week to adjust the weekly offs.

Constable Pandit Gavit said, “Earlier, we worked 12 hours a day. Now, we get more time with our families.”

“For detecting cases, there are no fixed hours; when we have a case, we do not go home for days. We have to identify the accused, trace him/her, and then interrogate. Then comes the recording of statements, documentation for court, etc. But when we are not on a case, the timings are fine,” said assistant inspector (detection) Uttam Mane.

*Five days of ease*
This one, surrounded by government colonies, has a boundary till Lalbaug market. It requires at least 45 more to manage the new shifts. Beat marshal Sharad Patil said, “My job is to stay on the field and patrol the area. The area has two main exit points, which lead to the highway. I work for eight hours for five days and one day for 12-13 hours, after which I get my weekly off.” Sub-inspector (detection) Somnath Deshman said, “Detection is tough. At times, we work for 36 to 40 hours continuously. The new eight-hour shifts are good if we are not on a case.”

*JJ Marg Police Station*

*'It's different now, better'*
Surrounded by several religious places, it has JJ hospital nearby, where criminals are brought for treatments and check-ups. Though escort officers from the local arms division are present, there have been instances when the culprits have managed to escape. The JJ marg police has to deal with this as well.

Constable Bhavna Shirsath said, “I deal with complaints of women. Each case is different; also, it gets tough when the complainants are aggressive. I try to calm them down... Before the new rule, we used to work 12-14 hours a day, but now, it's different, better. When bandobast needs to be done, there are no fixed timings, but overall, it's a good initiative by our chief.”

“We are doing our best to make this work. We need more staff; if we get 40-odd more, it will be smoother. As a senior inspector, I used to get a lot of complaints from staffers regarding leaves and weekly offs and overtime, but after the enforcement, that's all stopped. I know the detection staff has no option if they are on a case, but we are finding ways to reduce their work and stress,” said Dilip Shinde.

*'Shifts helping me stay fit'*

Located in a highly sensitive area, it's surrounded by 12 mosques, 18 temples, 12 dargahs, two churches and a synagogue. Six officers in three-hour shifts are also deployed outside the office of Zakir Naik's IRF following the ban on the Foundation.

Head constable Rambhau Garje said, “Dongri is a sensitive area; several big festivals are celebrated here, which see mass gatherings. During such times, citizens' security is the priority; hence, we don't see how many hours we are working. But the eight-hour shift move is helping. I am thankful to CP sir.”

“I am a 'gund commander'. My job is to keep a watch on anti-social elements and history-sheeters for which fitness is important. The new shift is helping me stay fit,” said constable Prakash Gund, adding, “But when I have to be on the field and a situation breaks out, then there's no looking at the time. But the situation is definitely better now.”

Inspector Ankush Katkar said, “On November 28, we initiated the system, it's working well. The staffers seem happier. When there are festivals or gatherings, we get additional staff from adjoining police stations.”

It was a traumatic Sunday for a 17-year-old when she got home in the afternoon to find her mother and stepfather stabbed and lying covered in blood. While her mother had died on the spot, her stepfather succumbed to his injuries later.

*The discovery*
The girl, who had gone to stay with her aunt on Saturday night, returned home on Sunday. When no one answered the door, she went to the window and peeked inside and found her mother Nasimbano Sheikh (40), a resident of Bhai Nagar, Chembur, and her husband Mohammad Abdul Majid Sheikh (50) lying in a pool of blood. She alerted the neighbours who broke the lock and went inside. They saw that Nasimbano was already dead, but Mohammad was still alive. He was taken to Sion Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Cops were also alerted about the incident.

A constable was captured on video, misusing special privileges granted to him, to jump a queue at an ATM to withdraw cash. The incident took place last week in Malad (East), when constable Mahesh Gosavi from Kurar police station forcefully entered an ATM booth, even while over 25 people waited patiently in line before him.

Post demonetisation, the Mumbai police that has an account with AXIS Bank, has been given an hour’s slot to withdraw cash across ATMs. However, Gosavi used it as a pretext to jump queue, even though he was withdrawing cash outside the allotted time.

Friends Sayyed Salman and Dhiraj Singh, who recorded the video of Gosavi flouting queue discipline, said they were waiting at an ATM booth in Kurar, Malad (east), when around 10 pm Gosavi appeared at the spot. “I was fourth in the line and there were 15 to 20 people behind me. The cop, who came on his bike, parked it and directly entered the ATM. I told him that we were standing in line since a long time to withdraw money and that he should follow the rules too. But, the cop didn’t listen to us, and barged inside,” said Singh. “When I insisted that he go back in line, he got angry,” Singh added.

Witnessing the argument, Salman, who was also standing outside the ATM entered inside and started shooting the incident on his phone. “I told him that we would share the video on several WhatsApp groups,” said Salman.*Constable Mahesh Gosavi of Kurar police station appears unbothered even as he is being shot on camera, after jumping an ATM queue*

However, the defiant constable refused to budge. “He told us that we could go to the police station and complain about him, and even share the video with the police commissioner if we wished,” said Salman. In the video, right after withdrawing cash, the constable is once again seen telling the duo that they could click more photographs of him. *Dhiraj Singh*

When contacted, LT Vhanamane, senior police inspector, Kurar police said, “If our constable has broken the law, action will be taken against him.”

“The idea was to make it a celebration of a family meal in Tuscany,” says Ayesha Shroff about the birthday brunch she hosted for designer Anna Singh at her Bandstand residence on Christmas Day.

“It had to be outdoors as the weather is so fantastic these days,” she says, adding, “And we wanted every one to sit at a single long table and enjoy a typical Christmas lunch.” And partaking of the seasonal fare were: Tabu, Manisha Koirala, Chunky and Bhavna Pandey and Kiran Rao (who lives in the same building and dropped in from upstairs) along with Jackie, Tiger and Krishna Shroff.

“Of course some people who ought to have been there, like Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan, Sussanne and Zayed Khan, and Bobby and Pooja Deol were traveling,” says Shroff, “But the rest of Anna’s loved ones were all there including her dad.” Nice!

*Cornucopia of delights*
What can one say about the recently concluded Serependity Arts Festival in Goa except, bravo? From the dazzling exhibitions of photography and art at the masterfully renovated Adil Shah Palace, to the riveting performance of Talatum in a circus tent, to the Coke Studio performances in the evening there was a virtual cornucopia of delights on offer.*Riyas Komu, Ranjit Hoskote and Ranjit Barot*

What’s more Munjal a soft-spoken and cultured cultural evangelist appears to have pulled off the impossible: Getting some of the country’s most celebrated divas and doyennes like Jyotindra Jain, Lilette Dubey, Sumant Jaykrishnan, Riyas Komu, Ranjit Hoskote and Ranjit Barot to collaborate on what is certain to become an annual institution.

At an elegant sit down dinner hosted on the festival’s last night by the Taj’s Rakesh Sarna on the lawns of the Hermitage to commemorate its successful partnering of Serendipity, Munjal spoke with passion about the need to introduce art history and creativity into the environment. Will we be back for more next year? You bet! This time from the very beginning.

*Character of their college*
“School and college are where you make your best and life-long friends and memories,” said media tycoon Ronnie Screwvala about the fire that engulfed the library of his alma mater, Sydenham College. “It was really sad to see the visuals of the inferno,” said Screwvala, who passed out from the leading institute for commercial education, in the mid seventies. “Libraries are the characters of each college,” he said.*Ronnie Screwvala, Milind Deora and Uday Kotak*

His fellow alumni, Congressman and former MP from South Mumbai, Milind Deora (Class of ’95) shared his anguish. “Fortunately the fire happened during a break. Hope the government lends all possible support to ensure a speedy renovation,” he said. Though when both men were asked if they recalled spending much time in the library, they were not so certain. “Can’t remember if there was a library on those floors (at my time),” said Deora.*Deepak Parekh, Kumar Mangalam Birla and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala*

For the record, the college, which for decades has attracted the cream of Mumbai’s youth has taught some of the country’s leading lights, such as the likes of Deepak Parekh, Uday Kotak, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Kumar Mangalam Birla, and Meera Sanyal.

*The year that music died*
There’s no getting around the fact that 2016 has been a very bad hair year for the planet, what with Trump, Brexit and uncountable other disasters and tragedies. No surprises then that as people woke up on Monday morning to the tragic news of George Michael’s passing, this last nail in the departing coffin of annus horribilis was felt most acutely by musicians themselves.*Ehsaan Noorani, Karsh Kale and George Michael. ‘FX@# you 2016. Music has never been more depleted by a single year,’ posted singer, composer Vishal Dadlani with an accompanying list of all the fatalities of this year (David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen etc). Fellow musician and guitarist Ehsaan Noorani, responded by adding a few more names ‘Keith Emerson, Greg Lake…) to which Indian American musician, Karsh Kale responded with his own disbelief over Michael.

“Was listening to him on the plane and landed to the news ...” And soon there was a chorus of lament. RIP George and hope you join the orchestra in the sky and make some great music together.

*Of royal repasts*
This Sunday the races in Mumbai were suffused with a heady dose of nostalgia, when M K Ajatshatru Singh, son of DR Karan Singh, and grandson of the late Maharaja Harisingh, the erstwhile ruler of Kashmir, visited the RWITC with his wife Ritu, and their son, Ranvijay, on the occasion was the 64th running of The Maharaja Harisinghji Cup.

The visitors also presented a rare vintage photograph of the late Maharaja to Vivek Jain, Chairman, RWITC. “It was a truly satisfying day and we were delighted that Mr. Singh has promised to return next year bringing a Kashmir theme to the race – with food and the arts,” says Jain. As is known, the RWITC is facing its most serious financial crisis in its history with mounting losses and the recent challenge of demonetization.

A 14-year-old boy, out riding his bicycle near Hypercity mall at Link Road in Malad, was killed when a speeding biker crashed into him on Sunday evening.

While Zubida Jalal Shaikh died on the spot, the biker, identified as Chetan Yadav, a Goregaon resident, sustained grievous injuries and has been admitted at Siddharth Hospital in Malad.

“Zubida was in Std VI and was riding his bicycle around the mall on Sunday evening as his school vacations were on,” said Farid Shaikh, a relative.

mid-day editorial: Use star power to make Mumbai shine Controversy’s favourite child Salman Khan, who celebrates his birthday today, recently became the face BMC’s drive against open defecation. According to civic authorities, the actor readily agreed to take on this role to contribute to the society.

It is indeed heartening to see our celebrities using their fame for positive causes. In our country, film stars and cricketers are treated like demi-gods. Highly paid denizens of the turf they strut, immediate visibility and greater reach are a part of the package that comes with these celebrities and, not surprisingly, they inspire a thousand minds.

Over the years, countless youngsters have fled from their homes to become a Bollywood actor or to just catch a glimpse of their favourite stars. From their fashion sense to fitness mantras to the kind of lingo they use, fans try to follow their icons to the hilt.

So it is with cricketers, who are roped in for endorsements to fuel the dreams of millions. Players such as Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni have had their names associated with
several good causes in the country.

Celebrity endorsements almost always tend to work better than documentary features on those causes because of the greater recall value that comes with the icon. Consequently, the causes get a push in the right direction when celebrities are spreading the message.

Eight-hour shifts started from September

*In a shocking incident, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and forcibly confined in a farm pit for over three weeks in November and raped repeatedly by a teenager at Kotda Nayani village of Morbi district in Gujarat before she was freed earlier this month, police said today.
*
According to a police official of Wankaner taluka police station, a case of rape, kidnapping and illegal confinement was registered against 19-year-old Naresh Solanki, while seven others belonging to his family were booked under charges of kidnapping and illegal confinement.

The motive of the crime allegedly was forced marriage. The family of the accused wanted the family of the victim to marry her to Naresh as they both belong to the same caste of Devipujaks. When the latter refused, they planned the kidnapping of the girl, police said.

The victim was kidnapped on November 11 and taken to a farmland some two kilometres from the village. There she was forced to live in a 8x8 feet pit covered on top with wooden plank so as to avoid her detection.

The victim was taken out to be raped repeatedly for over three weeks before she was freed by her father and others in the village on December 4.

The girl, in her statement to police, said that she was kidnapped by eight persons late night on November 11 and taken to a farmland in an autorickshaw where she was forced to live in a 8x8 feet pit dug in the farm.

As per the girls statement, she was confined in the pit and was taken out only to be raped by accused Naresh.

The girls father lodged a case of kidnapping against unknown persons on November 25.

After intense search, the girl was finally found on December 4, the official said, adding that based on her statement, police lodged a case against the eight accused who were subsequently arrested.

The eight persons include Naresh, his brother Haresh, father Janantbhai Solanki and his grandfather Chaturbhai Solanki, who are currently lodged in Rajkot central jail, they said.

Other than sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (abduction of woman to compel her into marriage) of the Indian Penal Code registered against unknown accused in the November 25 FIR, police have also added sections 376 (rape) against Naresh along with relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Sponsored Article: Can anyone become a trader? The short answer to this question is, yes anyone can become a Forex Trader but in reality there is a much longer answer. There are so many factors involved in determining if this is the right path for you. Is is a career you are looking for or a way to make money outside of your regular employment. Do you intend to do your own trading or hire a brokerage firm with traders who trade for you. Do you want to learn all the ins and outs or would you join a social trading network and mimic someone else’s trades?

*There is also a difference between becoming a trader and becoming a successful trader*. Anyone can become a trader but not everyone has what it takes to be successful. At this point we will assume that the question that is being asked is who can become a successful Forex Trader and we will examine the elements necessary for that to happen.

Being a Forex trader takes patience, flexibility, persistence and the ability to handle stressful situations well. The Forex market fluctuates greatly. It’s important to know yourself well and be aware of how you will handle the highs and lows of trading before you start.

A trader needs to know he can lose money and still be ok. Forex traders can not be winners 100% of the time. A person must be able to handle losses both financially and emotionally in order to be a Forex trader. It is also a matter of determination. A successful trader needs to be determined to weather the storms and stick it out because many beginning traders struggle with difficult losses before they make consistent profits.

Fortunately there are countless opportunities to learn the Forex Market before one decides to jump in. There are websites, books, social networks, software, and magazines. An interested person can spend anywhere from hours to months learning about the market while they decide how to proceed.

A trader just starting out will want to chose a large brokerage. The larger brokerage firms will likely have been reviewed extensively. They will also be more likely to have methods of insuring you against bankruptcy. These firms will allow traders to trade with a simulator so that until a person feels comfortable trading with real currency, they can get the feel of the market. These accounts are called demo accounts and most large firms offer this option.

Once you have passed the point of trading on a demo account you need to make sure you have enough liquidity to start trading real money. It is recommended to have at least one thousand dollars to open what most brokerages call a mini account.

‘If you’re making an Asian-flavoured cocktail, use lemon zest instead of kaffir lime. Use a rolling pin instead of a muddler. Use an old fashioned rock glass for a cocktail of any kind; it’s multi-purpose. If you want to avoid soft drinks, you can use non-aerated ready-to-drink juices, flavoured tea, etc, which are lower on sugar and offer better flavouring.’

*For beachbums: Very Berry Khatta*
Muddle two mulberries, half a lime and one orange wedge. Add grape juice (60 ml), kala khatta syrup (30 ml), black salt to taste and stir. Serve over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh pomegranate, two mulberries and two lime rings.

*Tips to host a fuss-free party*

*1) Premix cocktails beforehand:* In large containers and jugs, premix your cocktails and store them in the fridge, so that you don’t have to be busy playing bartender through the night.

*2) Check on ice:* Ensure you are well-stocked with ice and soft drinks. Soft drinks help the most when you run out of ingredients.

*3) Keep sugar syrup and lime juice handy:* Both sugar syrup and lime juice (sour mix) are required for every cocktail. It is convenient to have them ready, rather than cutting and squeezing a lime while making a cocktail or trying to dissolve sugar in the drink.

*4) Avoid using expensive glassware:* Don’t be tempted to use your expensive crystal glasses for your house parties. Use paper glasses to avoid breakage and damage done by drunk friends.

*5) Care for teetotallers:* Make sure you have options for non-drinkers beyond bottled water. Try non-fussy pre-made mixes like cranberry juice with lime, ginger in sparking water (soda), flavoured lemonades or virgin mojitos. Also, ensure there’s enough finger food to last the night.

This crime is literally a hole in the wall. A watchman working for a housing society behind the Ulhasnagar branch of Mannapuram Gold Loan fled with 35 kg of gold worth Rs 9 crore on Sunday night, after making several holes over the course of two days to gain entry. The former and current watchmen of the housing society are prime suspects.*The watchman first made a hole in the shared wall of the society’s water pump room and the branch’s toilet (right) He then cut holes into the safety vault with gas cutters to steal the gold*

*Water pump to loo*
Cops said the branch of the gold loaning agency is located in Sai Krupa Palace housing society, and right behind it is a staircase to enter the building. “Under the staircase is a small area housing the water pump. The watchman of building, who is a suspect and has fled, made a hole from the water-pump room to the toilet of the branch,” said Surendra Shirsat, senior police inspector of Vithalwadi police station.

*Also read: Watchman robs Rs 80 lakh, offers Rs 11,000 at Dargah*

The watchman entered the branch from the toilet and then went to the safety vault that had the gold. Just then, the security alarm on the vault beeped and reached Mannapuram’s vigilance department in Thane. Officers from the department reached the branch. “We saw the locks were intact from outside and as we don’t have keys, we thought a dog might have hit the shutter. Since the locks were intact, we left,” said a vigilance department officer.

*Thieving brothers*
The prime suspects are Deepak Thapa and his cousin Mansingh Thapa. Deepak was employed as watchman after Mansingh left in the first week of December to get married. Deepak is now absconding and both the brothers’ phones are switched off. A team of Thane police has left for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, from where the brothers might enter Nepal. The police are also keeping an eye on all trains leaving for the states. But, finding the duo could be tough, as they do not have any photo, neither can they be spotted on CCTV, as the camera’s wire was cut at the time of the theft.

Sapna Pereira has stumped the police yet again. Hundreds of complaints have piled up against her, most recently for rampaging outside Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity Home in Vile Parle (E). On Friday morning, the Santacruz police arrived at her house in Nehru Nagar to serve a notice under Section 41 (D) of the Bombay Police Act, but their resolve wilted when she threatened self-immolation.

API Anil Kadam recalled, “Two female constables and I arrived and saw Sapna was drunk. She gathered pieces of cloth in the middle of the room and set them on fire. She then threatened to set herself ablaze. We were left with no choice but to return without arresting her.”

The same evening, Sapna reported to the police station to hear the charges. By then it was too late in the evening to arrest a woman, so they had to let her go.

*Playing the perfect Santa*
Given that she now heads the production and marketing of a much-loved brand of jams and preserves, one would think Christmas gift ideas are a no-brainer for Rebecca Vaz. But along with hampers of fruity goodness from the mountains of Himachal, Vaz also rolled up towels into cuddly creatures to add a festive touch to her gifts. Seen here are the goodies she sent to actor Ashwin Mushran.

*Christmas, Kerala style*
In these times of demonetisation, a little humour is always welcome. And who better than college kids to do the job? This Christmas, a college in Kottayam flaunted a Santa with a deflated paunch and this interesting message: “Sorry kids... no gifts this year due to demonetisation. Ask Uncle Modi.” Well, one does feel the pinch more during festivals and while Diwali dodged a bullet, Christmas fell bang in the middle of cash crunch this year.

*How they forget!*
And so, another food blogger takes the plunge. In the melting pot where everyone is an expert, and the “points don’t really matter” (that famous line from cult TV show – Whose Line Is It Anyway?). This particular ‘popular expert’ is now out with a book that celebrates India’s street food from its gullies and back lanes.*Mumbai’s iconic Irani restaurant, Kyani & Co, is over 112 years old*

Now, while this diarist is happy to see another book that hails the country’s vibrant food scene, we were forced to jog our memory to a tweet some time back by the same blogger after he wrote a page-long eulogy yesterday in a daily tabloid, waxing eloquent about the city’s Maharashtrian fare.

This diarist recalls a shocking generalisation in that tweet on Mumbai’s lack of old restaurants and eating places, and how most aren’t older than 30-40 years! Seriously? So, we conveniently sidestep the Irani cafes, the Udipi landmarks and the Maharashtrian culinary citadels of Dadar.

And never mind the decadently inviting eateries of Bhendi Bazar and Girgaum. What was more surprising, amusing almost, is that the writer admits being a migrant who made the city his home. Whatever happened to the homework despite all the culinary wanderings?

While we are all for additions to the flock, such misinformation reflects utter disrespect not only to a city's rich, diverse food-scape but also a lack of research by so-called experts who’ve built careers on utterances in social media. We’ll wait to see how hot this pot remains.

*City loses its salt doll*
Mumbai was her ocean and the salt doll has dissolved in it. Veteran theatre actress Vandana Mishra (Sushila Lotlikar before marriage) passed away yesterday and in her, Mumbai has not only lost a talented individual but also its chronicler.

*Vandana Mishra*

Mee Mithachi Baahuli (I, The Salt Doll, translated by Jerry Pinto) was Mishra’s memoir of her life and struggles in the city, and through her words emerged a compelling portrait of Mumbai, where she also made a quiet plea for the pluralism and diversity that made it a great metropolis.

The young Konkani girl, who was forced to give up her education and join Marathi theatre, went on to storm the Gujarati and Marwadi stages too. She retired at a young age, only to begin another innings as a character actor.

“When I met her, she was bright and spirited and told stories with a zest and a delight that belied her eighty-plus years,” wrote Pinto, remembering her. Mishra’s journalist son, Ambarish, survives her.

*Because lips don’t lie!*
It is a known fact that India has the second largest number of female smokers, 12.1 billion, in the world. And lately, these smokers are taking steps to remedy the side effects of their habit.

A city cosmetic surgeon has revealed that this has impacted the demand for lip lightening surgery — he claims that 50 per cent of those opting for this surgery are smokers and nearly all are women. And it is not just the corporate, working women below 40 who are opting for this surgery.

Mo Naga, Sameer Kulavoor, Orijit Sen, Kriti Monga, Cyrus Daruwala, Ayaz Basrai, Abhijeet Kini — the who’s who of the Indian illustrators world have shared a common stage, Sketchup. It is a platform for artists and illustrators to network and collaborate. Illustrator Madhuvanthi Mohan founded it in 2014. The 28-year-old hosts meet-ups every few months, bringing in artists to talk about their design journeys.*Madhuvanthi Mohan and Janine Shroff*

This Sunday, the 15th edition of Sketchup will see London-based Janine Shroff take the stage. Shroff’s work is figurative and surreal — utilising bright colours and humour with darker undertones. She is part of the Kadak Collective, had a solo show recently at Sitara Studios and is collaborating with Kulture Shop.

“We invite an established speaker to share their journey. It’s an informal meeting, where we talk about what inspires us and the problems we face,” says Mohan, owner of Something Sketchy, through which she retails products with her illustrations on them.

When we stepped into a rehearsal studio in Andheri, recently, Anamika Tiwari (who plays Titania) and Gagandev Singh Riar (who essays Oberon) in Khwaab-Sa, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, were locked in a passionate scene. Entangled in an embrace, their dialogues in The Company Theatre’s latest production, sounded a lot like Bhojpuri to us. When we whispered to director Atul Kumar, asking him if his new play was in a regional language, he nodded in the negative. “It’s gibberish,” he said, flashing a knowing smile. “ We have used phonetic impressions of various North Indian languages and invented our own language. If you listen to it you might think it’s a dialect, but it’s nonsense. We manage to communicate with gestures,” he said.*Anamika Tiwari and Gagandev Singh Riar rehearsing a scene. Pic/Nimesh Dave*

*Taiwan to Mumbai*
The play — a mix of Contemporary dance, Hindi gibberish and live Contemporary World Music performed by artistes from all over India — was commissioned by Kham Theatre in Taipei, Taiwan. After opening there in October, the play is now ready to premiere in India with a run in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Pune, in January. “We have changed about 30 per cent of the content that the play opened with, including the music, dance sequences and costumes. An actor had to be replaced, too,” revealed Kumar, adding, “It was a luxury that usually theatre companies don’t have. I am glad we could afford to do it.”*Atul Kumar*

Kumar’s earlier play Piya Behrupiya, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, (2012) featuring live Folk music, opened in London and turned out to be a commercial success. “I like Folk music but doing a musical like Piya Behrupiya was an experiment that worked commercially. However, I can do commercial elsewhere. That’s not why I do theatre. I will experiment. It’s a coincidence that this is a Shakespeare play too,” shared 48-year-old Kumar who has received basic training in Kathakali and Kalaripayattu in Kerala for over three years, as well as a stint with the master of visual theatre, Philippe Genty, in France.

*Modern take*
“I wanted to work with Contemporary dance and that was my trigger point and my opening inspiration. I will explore it for a bit and this play is my first one in that attempt. There is live music this time too, but it’s Western as opposed to Folk. There are drums and electronic music. There are also percussion instruments from around the world. We will use the sarangi and tabla for an Indian tone along with Electronic sampling of sounds from acoustic to everyday sounds and looping it. It’s an experiment I am trying for the first time,” he said as the actors readied to rehearse the next scene.

While he corrected the nuances in the tone of the dialogue, we noticed that Kumar creates a scene along with the actor. We watched as an actor made a suggestion and the scene suddenly has a brand new interpretation. “We are sticking to the original play. We have interpreted it though. The main lover’s track in the play doesn’t uses his lines at all, as it’s communicated through dance. The choreographer, Diya Naidu, is able to conceive parallels from words to gesture,” shared Kumar. The sets are simple but execution is elaborate. “Things keep appearing and disappearing as the imagery and movement is dream like. It has to work in different theaters which is the biggest challenge since we are travelling quite a bit with the play ,” he explained.

The play was conceptualised and rehearsed at TCT’s artist residency in Kamshet. As we watched the rehearsals in Andheri, the dancers of the play rehearsed in Bengaluru. “We held open auditions in multiple cities and chose Attakkalari from Bengaluru,” says Kumar adding that working with dancers has been a creative learning for him.

Just two days after two 16-year-old boys were arrested for kidnapping and murdering a three-and-a-half-year old girl, it has been found that their love for sports cars drove them to commit the gruesome act. During interrogation they revealed that they had planned to buy a luxury car with the Rs 1 crore ransom that they had demanded from the girl’s parents. Both the accused will be kept at the Dongri Remand Home till January 2.

*Also read - Mumbai crime: 3-year-old girl kidnapped, killed by two minors*

An officer from JJ Marg police station said, “The prime accused was fond of sports cars. Though he had bought one against his father’s wish, he desired to purchase a Mercedes Benz. Both the accused had planned to divide the money. After negotiating with the girl’s parents, the boys had agreed on R28 lakh, as they thought that they could at least buy a sports bike.”

*The case*
The girl Junera Muntaj Khan, a resident of Sarbatwala Chawl, was abducted on December 5. The prime accused, who was the victim’s neighbour, is a first year science student in a SoBo college. The girl used to visit his house quite often. A police officer said, “He belongs to an upper middle class family and even his relatives are quite well off. The other accused lives in the same locality and his father runs a business of tours and travels.”

The officer further added, “The duo hatched the plan on a day early in December while they were sitting at the prime accused’s house. On the evening of December 5 when the accused’s family went out, Junera arrived at his house to play. He thought that it was the right opportunity to execute the plan. He immediately took out the chloroform bottle, poured some on a cloth and rubbed it against Junera’s nose. Unknowingly he applied more force and her nose started bleeding. Meanwhile, when he realised that the girl’s mother must be looking for her, he killed her using the cable of a mobile charger.”

For many winter lovers in Mumbai, the slight nip in the air is too mild to offer any gratifying experience of the season. So, they head north to feel the real chill — bonfires, heaters, mufflers, gloves, the works. But Mumbai’s marginal winter also comes as a relief for some. And in what almost seems like the perfect exchange, as the city sees off its avid travellers to the Rann of Kutch, the white sandy expanse of Gujarat sends its winged inhabitants to Mumbai for a gentler climate. Come January and parts of the city will don a layer of pink, as flamingos fly for over 600 km to make Mumbai their home until the first monsoon showers arrive.*Lesser flamingos at Airoli Creek*

“Flamingos were first spotted in Mumbai back in 2000, and large flocks have since been seen here every winter from 2003. Their time of migration and the number that arrives in the city depends on various factors like the weather and rainfall in Kutch, as well as the suitability of the wintering habitat, level of disturbances, and hazards in the flying route,” says Bilwada Kale, public relations officer, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). A part of the category of birds called waders, flamingos feed on small marine animals and plants in brackish shallow water. This explains why the mudflats of Sewri are their preferred destination in the city.*People soak in the view of the birds at Flamingo Festival organised by the Bombay Natural History Society earlier this year*

BNHS will soon be organising a birding trip to the Sewri mudflats once the flamingos arrive in substantial numbers. “The ideal time for watching the flamingos is decided according to the tide timings; two hours after low tide is what’s most preferable,” explains Kale. While BNHS encourages people to carry their own set of binoculars, it makes spotting scopes available at the site for a better, more detailed view of the flamingos. As you peer into the scopes, experts from the organisation tell you all about the birds’ life cycle and migratory routine. Lesser-known migratory birds like smaller waterbirds are also found at the mudflats, and you can learn all about them, too.**On:* January 15, 8.30 am meeting point Sewri station

*Flamingos in India*
There are two species of flamingos in India, Phoenicopterus roseus (Greater Flamingo) and Phoeniconaias minor (Lesser Flamingo). The majority of the lesser flamingo population is found in Gujarat. This bird is also found in good numbers in Maharashtra at Sewri and Bhigwan, and Pulicat lake in Andhra Pradesh. The greater flamingo species is more widely distributed; it is found in small pockets right from Okhla Bird Sanctuary of New Delhi to Kanyakumari.

As Mumbai glows in the warmth of Yuletide, the exchange of gifts is part and parcel of the season. Now, the recently restored Christ Church in Byculla has come up with a novel idea to join in this spirit. When the second phase of restoration wrapped up earlier this month, trust members and administrators of the over 180-year-old church decided to create commemorative bookmarks, postcards and postage stamps.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/dec/Pharmacists-s.jpg

A proposal to introduce a six-month course for unqualified employees working at medical stores has proved to be a bitter pill to swallow for pharmacists in Maharashtra, who argue that it’s not fair to those who studied for four years to get their licence and could also endanger patients’ lives. The Maharashtra Pharmacists Association has also sent a letter of disapproval to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

*Qualification*
As per the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, every medical shop must have at least one qualified pharmacist to obtain a licence to sell medicines. These pharmacists get the necessary qualification after a four-year course or a one-year diploma in pharmacy. During the course, they are taught subjects like pharmaceutics, pharmacology pathophysiology, and community pharmacy.

But now, the government is planning to introduce a refresher course to certify unqualified employees who have a minimum of five years of experience working in medical shops. Pharmacists claim that it will lead to mushrooming of ‘un-qualified pharmacists’ who can put patients’ lives at risk. Also, it will affect employment opportunities for the thousands of students who graduate from pharmacy colleges every year.

“What is the point of studying for four years to become a pharmacist if they can get a licence without even fulfilling the criteria? Many of the workers in medical shops haven’t even graduated,” said Vijay P Patil, president of Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council.

Maharashtra Pharmacists Association wrote to the Drugs Controller General of India, New Delhi this month, stating: “One cannot rule out the possibility of endangering lives of public due to errors by these so called pharmacists. Already our country is facing problems like menace of antibiotics and would be diabetic capital of the world…this move from ministry can aggravate these issues.”

The association has also raised objections against the president of the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), Jagannath Shinde, who is allegedly behind the proposal. Shinde, however, claims that he has merely asked the government to provide an alternative source of income to the thousands of employees who will lose their jobs because they do not have the right qualifications.

*State of education*
States like Uttar Pradesh, in particular, have many medical stores that function without qualified employees and are at the risk of losing their licence. The proposal to introduce the six-month course would protect these pharmacies and the livelihoods of the employees. Shinde explained, “In UP and Bihar, DCGI had issued licenses to medical shops improperly. Now that everything has come online, they will rectify this. Being the head of an association that oversees 7 lakh medical shops across India, I have raised the issue that medical shop workers who have worked for decades need to be given an alternative source of income. But I haven’t asked for any amendment in rules that will affect pharmacists in Maharashtra,” said Shinde.

On the other hand, experts here argue that any such amendment will apply across all states and will create chaos in Maharashtra, which has plenty of qualified pharmacists already.

It was prime time at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, yesterday, as hundreds of students thronged the premier institute to watch an interactive session between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and former news anchor Arnab Goswami during the annual campus festival — Mood Indigo.

The interaction began with few questions thrown by Goswami at Fadnavis. Before the much-awaited discussion, students had already registered their questions on social media with the tag #AskMahaCM. Despite Goswami’s reputation for being a tough interviewer, however, the discussion didn’t have many penetrating or impressive questions. Instead, it was more like an hour of entertainment for the young audience who cheered as both Fadnavis and Goswami took potshots, at each other and the Opposition and other political leaders.

*Standing his ground*
Perhaps the most incisive turn the chat took was while discussing reservation policies. While the IIT circles are known to strongly oppose reservation in admissions, the CM stood his ground on the issue and said, “We have some sections of society that have been deprived of opportunities. To help them come forward, reservation will continue to remain in the system for some more time.”

Goswami pointed out that political leaders tend to bend to the wishes of their vote bank while making policy decisions.

Fadnavis justified this and explained: “To become an agent of change, it is important for me to get elected, for which my vote bank is very important. Unlike you, Arnab, I have to face my voters every five years to ask for votes again, so I cannot afford to have them disappointed. One has to strike a balance here.” However, the news anchor continued to pursue the issue in the style he is well known for, asking, “Why can’t the government stand behind what is right even if that is not the popular opinion?” To this, Fadnavis responded, “My government has taken such a stand by allowing equal right of worship to women in religious places such as Haji Ali Dargah and Shani Shingnapur. Only I am not as fiery as you to be able to shout about it.”

*Comedy hour*
What really made the students cheer was when Goswami and Fadnavis trained their sarcasm on other political leaders, particularly from the Congress. “I was once in a program where Mammohan Singh spoke,” quipped Goswami, drawing chuckles from the audience in the convocation hall. This was followed by a discussion of dynasty politics.

“Rahul Gandhi has no qualifications other than being a son of the Nehru-Gandhi family,” said Fadnavis, further adding, “While dynasty cannot be completely avoided, that should not be the sole qualification for anybody.”

Three days after three people drowned in a boat party on Powai lake, the authorities have assured that they will take action against illegal houseboats to stop such incidents.

The Powai police are yet to register a case as they are still investigating, but in the meanwhile, they have asked BMC officials to take action.

Senior Police Inspector Keshav Mahadeshwar said they are investigating the matter and in the meanwhile, they have called the local BMC official as the matter falls within the purview of the Corporation.

MP Kirit Somaiya has also written to the BMC and police to take adequate steps to ensure such incidents aren’t repeated in future.

“I have written to the BMC and police asking them to take steps against the concerned authority. The Angling Association is illegally running these houseboats on the lake. I had asked BMC to look into the matter earlier as well, but they didn’t take any action. What happened on Saturday amounts to a criminal offence,” said Somaiya.

Powai Lake becomes a hub for celebrations during festivals. So, to stop more such incidents, Somaiya has recommended that no boats should be allowed on the lake on new year’s eve. Extra police force will be deployed to take precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, the administration has started preparing a detailed report of the loss and is also collecting data of students’ certificates and marksheets that were burnt in the fire.

Speaking to mid-day, professor Ashish Pawaskar, Director of the alumni association said, “Once the students return from their vacation, they will need the books that the institute plans to purchase.”

Prathik Shetty, Chairman of the institute said, “Secretary for higher education visited the institute on Monday and said that the government will extend its support for rebuilding the library. The mess that had resulted from the fire has been cleared and even the electricity supply has been restored. The institute is ready to resume classes. While the library is restructured, the seminar hall will be used as a makeshift library. The management will help all students to get back their documents.”

Aamir Khan's 'Dangal' has crossed the Rs 100-crore mark in just three days much like Salman Khan's 'Sultan', which also had wrestling as its setting."

After collecting *Rs 29.78 crore and Rs 34.82 crore on Friday and Saturday* respectively, the film witnessed a huge jump in business on Sunday — Rs 42.35 crore. It also made a record for single day collection.

Three day collection of 'Dangal' now stands at Rs 106.95 crore, surpassing Sultan's three-day figures by Rs 1.42 crore.

'Dangal' became the fifth Aamir movie to cross Rs 100 crore, after 'Ghajini', '3 Idiots', 'Dhoom 3' and 'pk'. However, it is to be seen whether the film will become 2016's top grosser.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/dec/Garden-s.jpg

Walkers at Sane Guruji Udyan, Prabhadevi, are shocked that the Mumbai Metro work will effectively close off their open space, in a few days. The entire park and the adjacent Nardulla Tank maidan is to be taken over for the Mumbai Metro III line from Colaba to Seepz, earmarked for the Siddhivinayak station.*A protest at the Nardulla Tank Maidan*

A protest was held on Sunday, where Prabhadevi locals held banners and walked around the vicinity to raise awareness about the ground being usurped for the Metro project. The protest though needed more traction and muscle for it to truly capture eyeballs and attention, like the Aarey agitation has done.

*Also read: NCP leader's school gobbles up open space, and claims it is protecting it**A tree at the garden has been marked for cutting*

*Alternate site needed*
Sukumar Damle, Secretary, Communist Party of India, Bombay Council was exhorting boys to stop playing cricket at the maidan, “join in the protests to create awareness. We are shocked that the Metro project will usurp a garden. There needs to be an alternate site for the Metro, why take away the garden and maidan? Why not first have dedicated lanes for BEST buses, instead of allowing so many private vehicles?” asked an irked Damle pointing to the large number of tourist buses, bringing people for Mumbai darshan to Siddhivinayak, which were parked in the vicinity.

*Sports champs*
For local Harshada Varandekar, this is nothing short of a “tragedy. You take away our maidans and gardens, and then you claim you want a Sachin Tendulkar and P V Sindhu? These spaces, however humble they may be are the stepping stones towards producing great sportspersons. Who can forget that Shivaji Park (about 1.5 km away) is the nursery of Indian cricket?” Varandekar feels there has not been enough effort to find an alternate location for the Metro station.

For, Prabhadevi’s Narendra Rane, “it will be a sad moment when I see these beautiful, majestic trees inside the maidan fall to the axe. I have been seeing these trees grow since the 1970s, I have grown up with them, they have provided the shade and succour for so many in their dark hours. Today, this park needs to be protected, it is a solution for those suffering from BP, high sugar, ill health. It is respite for the old, who perhaps find friends and some laughter here, in their twilight years, is the local sentiment. Rane scoffs, “First, you cut trees, take away the greenery and then complain about global warming?” A couple of locals in the protest shouted, “We dare Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take away the Priyadarshini Park of Nepean Sea Road, for any project. First, take away parks from those so called important places and then, eye Prabhadevi.”

*Tree felling*
Zoru Bhathena, environmental activist who has been actively campaigning against the Aarey becoming a Metro shed said, “Once a tree is marked then, that means there is a green signal given to go ahead and cut it. I would like to know specifically, where all these trees are going to be replanted. We are not being given that information. It is no use cutting a tree in SoBo, or Prabhadevi for instance and then, going and replanting it in Borivali for example. Why are we not being told exactly where all these trees are going to be replanted?” he asks.

Locals feel that Prabhadevi needs a high profile, save Prabhadevi garden and maidan movement like Aarey has. It needs activism that has more visibility and traction, because it does not attract celebrities or names like the Aarey cause does.

*More activism*
Eknath Mane, one of the leaders of the “Maidan Bachao Andolan’ movement said, “The maidan and the garden, are going to be closed they say for five years because the ‘Siddhivinayak Metro Station’ is coming up underground. I am skeptical, these five years could extend to 10 or 15, knowing the pace of our projects and their track record.” Mane says that an alternate site could have been examined. “Did the Metro authorities have a public meeting with the people? Why are our corporators not speaking up or joining in this agitation?”

Mane says like the others he is not against “progress, for the city. Yet, we need parks and open spaces too. We need to see more activism to save these spaces. It is not enough for political parties to put up posters. They must come out on the road and to this space to protest,” finishes Mane, who also thinks that existing transport options should have been upgraded instead of adding a new transport facility to the city. The Mumbai Metro officials and spokesperson remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts to contact them.*Underground Line 3*
The Mumbai Metro Line 3 (MML-3) is a 33.5 km long fully underground corridor with 27 stations (26 underground and 1 at grade) connecting Colaba to SEEPZ via Bandra Kurla Complex and is a part of the ‘Mumbai Metro Master Plan’ covering nine corridors with 153 km to be implemented in three phases. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has been constituted as a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) between the Govt. of India (GOI) and Govt. of Maharashtra (GOM) and is responsible for the implementation of this project.

*Hand over Priyadarshini Park, says BMC
*Stepping up action against private groups to whom the BMC had handed over plots for maintenance, the civic body has issued a notice to Priyadarshini Park for violating the lease agreement and undertaking illegal constructions. The corporation wants the Malabar Citizens Forum, which maintains the park, to give back the charge to them. In a notice issued on December 23, the civic body mentioned that two sheds had been constructed in the park without its permission. A senior civic official from the garden department said, “A synthetic jogging track has been constructed in the sports complex without the BMC’s approval. Even permanent structures have been built inside the park to be used as gymnasium, recreational and party halls. Commercial activities in the park are completely in violation of the agreement.”

General Secretary of Priyadarshini Park Susieben Shah said, “The civic body sent us a notice last week but it does not mention anything about violations. It states that they are taking back all the plots given to private parties under the adoption policy due to certain changes in rules. We have approached the court and it will come up for hearing on Tuesday.”

A Toyota Corolla, belonging to Andheriwala Motor Driving School in Jogeshwari, was up in flames just outside the Versova Metro Station on Monday. A leakage in the car’s CNG tank led to the fire.

After being informed, firefighters from the Goregaon fire station arrived at the spot within 20 minutes and controlled the blaze. The driver managed to escape the vehicle in time and no casualties have been reported in the incident.

*CNG leak*
Station officer of Goregaon fire station Ashish Aadhange, who had received a call regarding the incident around 1pm said, “The CNG tank of the car had started leaking. As the vehicle was in motion, a spark might have ignited the gas causing the fire. It was an accident.”

The Secret Supper Project is now open for lunch. Savor is a gourmet lunch subscription service started by the four chefs who, four years back, introduced the city to a secret supper club.*The lunch came packed in a sturdy paper bag*

Their lunch service, and the identity of the founders, is now out in the open. Meet chefs Kanu Gupta, Tejal Choksi, Sushil Multani and Sashank Poojari who want to change your lunchtime habits from January.

*What’s for lunch?*
“India doesn’t have a lunch hour. Here, lunch is treated as a distraction and usually, something you grab while on-the-go. We wanted to create a lunch hour where you actually spend time and savour the food you are eating,” says Gupta.*Wild Mushroom Tortellini*

The team was inspired by a delivery service in Paris that sends Bento boxes for lunch anywhere, even in a park.

Savor lunches will feature a main, a side, salad and dessert. On the menu is food across cuisines — Italian, East Asian, Japanese and French, among others. This month’s pilot menu had Matcha Cheesecake, Pecorino Rolls, Fennel Dauphinois, Vichy Carrots and Tofu or Pork Katsudon. “Imagine your mum is a Michelin-starred chef and is rustling up new food every day,” says Gupta. “No menu will be repeated in the month.”*Beetroot Tartare*

*How it fared*
We tried a sample pack. Our lunches (a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian version, R650 each) came neatly packed in a paper bag, clipped with festive red and green clips. The traditional Spanish Ajoblanco Soup with Melon was a hick, creamy and nutty mix of bread and almonds, with the faintest hint of garlic. The Red Pepper Salad was equal parts refreshing, crunchy, tangy and spicy. The Cocido Stew was a light fragrant stew filled with chunks of chicken, chorizo, and redolent with the spicy flavour of the sausage. We weren’t as fond of its vegetarian version, which lacked depth. Dessert was the mildly sweet Bunuelo, a fried doughball snack popular in Latin American countries.*(From left) Sashank Poojari, Tejal Choksi, Kanu Gupta and Sushil Multani*

We love that the Savor team (of eight) is using local ingredients sourced from small producers. Gupta is quick to point out that Savor isn’t a health food service. “If you eat good produce and control your portions, you can stay healthy. We measure the proteins and total grams of the food, and ensure that the portion sizes are the same every day,” he adds.

Savor started with a pilot this month, delivering to Prabhadevi, Lower Parel and Worli; from January they will move to Bandra and across all of SoBo.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/dec/Threepenny-Opera-s.jpg

“You see, it is like this. These poorest of the poor — give and it shall be given unto you, and so on — have nothing in the world apart from celebrations. Well, there are various possibilities. Of course, there has to be a criminal. What happens to him is less important. Either they want to see a murderer hanged or they want to see one crowned. All the rest is immaterial.”

These lines uttered by a character called Peachum in Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s play The Threepenny Opera, could have been spoken by a man in India. Peachum runs a gang of beggars, and this line of work is only too familiar in Mumbai. But as long as there is poverty and crime, a play like this one will be staged and also find an audience.

A screening of the National Theatre’s (London) production, that has been winning rave reviews, was seen in Mumbai, as part of the NT Live programme, with Rory Kinnear playing the notorious gangster called Mack The Knife. The new adaptation is by award-winning playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Rufus Norris, the current director of the National Theatre, and described as “sexy” in many reviews.

According to website on the musical, “The Threepenny Opera proclaims itself an opera for beggars,” and it was in fact an attempt both to satirise traditional opera and operetta and to create a new kind of musical theatre based on the theories of two young German artists, composer Kurt Weill and poet-playwright Bert Brecht. The show opens with a mock-Baroque overture, a nod to Threepenny’s source, The Beggar’s Opera, a brilliantly successful parody of Handel’s operas written by John Gay in 1728. In a brief prologue following the overture, a shabby figure comes onstage with a barrel organ and launches into a song chronicling the crimes of the notorious bandit and womanizer Macheath, “Mack the Knife.” The setting is a fair in Soho (London), just before Queen Victoria’s coronation… Early in 1928, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht were both regarded as enfants terribles in the world of Weimar culture. They had one obscure collaboration under their belt, Weill’s setting of five of Brecht’s poems about an imaginary city called Mahagonny, and they were already hard at work on the full-length Mahagonny opera, which would cause a scandal and lead to Nazi riots in 1930. But Brecht was also toying with the famous Beggar’s Opera by John Gay, from 1728, which had been revived in London in 1920 and run for years. Elisabeth Hauptmann, Brecht’s assistant and collaborator, introduced him to the piece and translated the English libretto into German.”

The original 1928 production that was not received or reviewer too well initially, went on to become a hit and was hailed as a landmark of twentieth-century musical theatre. It was one of the few musicals that was about beggars, gangsters and hookers, and, of course, the womanising Macheath aka Mack The Knife. It was staged when Germany was going through a tough time, and as a film on the history of the play notes, when the actors were portraying hunger on stage, they were probably hungry in real life.

Michael Billington’s review in The Guardian states, “What does this famous piece of theatre mean to us today? The distinguished translator John Willett got it right when he said it survived less because of its political content than through its establishment of a new theatrical genre. That came home to me while watching Rufus Norris’s grubbily vivacious revival, which doesn’t so much ignite our social anger as remind us that Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill proved you can create memorable musical theatre out of exuberant low-life.”

One of the finest Indian adaptations of the play was by the legendary PL Deshpande, directed by Dr Jabbar Patel, called Teen Paishacha Tamasha. The 1978 version of the play made use of the post-Emergency mood to give it a clear political edge. With Nandu Bhende playing Mack, Patel used rock, pop and folk music to enhance the experience of the production.

A more recent production of The Threepenny Opera was Sunil Shanbag’s working with Chetan Datar’s adaptation, called Mastana Rampuri ur Chhappan Chhuri, staged in 2007.

Like all great pieces of work, everyone adapting a Brecht play can make it their own; in every society there is poverty, crime and corruption; what was unique was Brecht’s point of view. In his world, Mack is not punished, because he is a creation of his circumstances. The song ‘What Keeps Mankind Alive’ goes:

You gentlemen who think you have a mission
To purge us of the seven deadly sins
Should first sort out the basic food position
Then start your preaching, that's where it begins
You lot, who preach restraint and watch your waist as well
Should learn, for once, the way the world is run
However much you twist, or whatever lies that you tell
Food is the first thing, morals follow on.

WATCH: Nawazuddin Siddiqui's 'Haraamkhor' trailer is FINALLY out

Haraamkhor has had a long struggle to make its way finally to the theatres soon.

In a landmark judgment last week, FCAT reversed their ban on the film citing it to be socially responsible and in fact hoping it would carry a positive message for girls to be aware of their rights. Shot in a small village in Gujarat, the film explores the romance between a 14 year old school student and her professor.

After the news and a new poster, now the trailer of the film has been released. Decorated with visuals set in a small village are the main characters of the film, the teacher, the student, the small boy who has crush on the same girl and his friend who helps him and the teacher's wife. Packed with great comical situations looks like both Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the child actors will have a great Jugal Bandi on screen trying to woo the girl played by Shweta Tripathi.

The trailer filled with peppy music is funny in parts as serious in the other sprinkled with the perfect dash of impeccable acting from its lead cast. We hear the film's shoot was wrapped up in a day over a fortnight making a whole new record. Set in all real locations the film was shot and wrapped up in 16 days making it one of the most fastest feature films to be shot in recent times.

"It was indeed very challenging to finish an entire feature film's shoot in 16 days. That's why the team's role was the most crucial. My lead actors- Nawaz bhai and Shweta were spot on. So was the crew. Siddharth, my DOP, and his team, along with the production team were all absolutely in tandem. There was no way this would have been possible without the team I had behind me," says director Shlok Sharma.

-*Watch the trailer of the film right here:*-

The film is set to release on January 13, 2017.

mid-day editorial: Sexist trolls should be given a dressing down

mid-day editorial: Sexist trolls should be given a dressing down Fast bowler Mohammed Shami was at the receiving end of social media bouncers after he put up a picture of his wife Hasin Jahan and baby on social media.

Before he could say howzatt, the pacer felt the fury of trolls who couldn’t swallow the fact that Hasin Jahan was wearing a gown. Many slammed him, stating that he was going against Islam and that, as a man, he should be telling his wife to cover herself fully in Islamic clothing. Many stated that she should wear a hijab.

Shami did get support from many Muslims and other communities, including former and present cricketers. Although he rose to his wife’s defence and took on the trolls, it is a matter of great shame that in this day and age, a man can get trolled because of the way his wife’s dress. The comments about her attire being ‘unIslamic’ are totally uncalled for — those who slammed Shami are surely not the arbiters of what is Islamic and what is not. The comments are not only unwarranted but highly sexist. Hasin Jahan should be free to exercise her freedom and choice in what she wants to wear. They point towards her as if she is some kind of property of Shami’s. This is yet another attempt to control women, body shame them and attack them as unchaste because of what they choose to wear.

With an eye on the civic polls, the BJP tried to strike a chord with the B-Town brigade at the Versova cultural festival. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who inaugurated the festival on Monday evening, was seen singing paeans to Bollywood celebrities, most of whom reside in Versova and the neighbouring Lokhandwala areas.

“The village of Versova has been an important part of Mumbai since the very beginning,” said Fadnavis, addressing a crowd primarily consisting of Versova Koliwada residents. He added, “I’m not sure what it is about Versova; is it an area where kalakaars are born, or does the area by default nurture and produce artistes?” Before his speech, artistes such as Udit Narayan and Sapna Awasthy, best known for their songs across Bollywood films, were felicitated by the CM.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him were local MLA Bharti Lavekar as well as MLA Ameet Satam and Ashish Shelar — faces of the BJP in the suburbs. “I have requested to set up a Bollywood hub in Versova, where artistes are given everything from an editing studio to auditioning space,” said Lavekar. “This could be a huge success in the area.”

Undeterred by the massive crackdown on the narcotics industry, peddlers eyeing huge profits on New Year’s Eve have come up with innovative, filmi code names for drugs, to throw cops off the scent. While the names of recent blockbusters Sairat, Mastani and Pink are trending, two high-end varieties of cocaine have also been named after wives of superstars.

“Many peddlers gear up for New Year as it’s their golden chance to make money. Orders pour in right after Christmas and continue till New Year’s eve,” said one senior officer from the Narcotics Control Bureau. The officer said Mumbai police has already cracked its whip on peddlers in the Colaba, Sandhurst Road and Wadi Bunder areas, forcing many of them to relocate. Kandivli police too seized psychotropic drugs worth over R1 crore. But while the NCB and city police’s anti-narcotics cell are claiming to have made serious dents to the drug industry, peddlers are trying to one-up the police by using filmi code names for popular drugs.

‘MD’ a common name for the narcotic drug Mephedrone has now been renamed Sairat, after this year’s Marathi film. “The consumption of MD makes you go wild. We heard Sairat means madness, so the name seemed apt,” said a source in the narcotics industry. Another popular name for MD is Mastani, inspired from last year’s film Bajirao Mastani. “The names of the drugs keep changing. It’s a strategy to throw the cops off guard,” a source added.

Meanwhile, two varieties of high-end cocaine have been named after wives of two Bollywood superstars. The cost ranges anywhere from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per gm.*Sairat is Mephedrone, Bajirao is Cocaine and Pink is code for LSD*

An official admitted names like these affect investigations.  “Whenever a peddler or junkie reveals such code names, we find it difficult to trace which part of the city this drug is being distributed to,” said one officer working in city’s anti-narcotics cell. “Naming drugs after movies is easy as one cannot make out exactly what the suspect is talking about.”

If it has an MRP, it’s fixed. Now on, don’t let any vendor force or fool you into paying more for cold drinks, food items or any packaged commodity that has an MRP on it.

The Legal Metrology Department, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Food Distribution, has decided to take strict action against anyone found selling packaged goods at dual prices.

*Notification rules*
A ministry notification states: “It is observed that at hotels, restaurants, dhabas, airports, railway stations, and other public outlets, sale of pre-packaged commodities at dual prices (is happening), which is a violation of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and Legal Metrology Act, 2009.”

The practice of charging more than the fixed retail price has been going on for a long time with consumers asked to pay R1 or R2 more than the MRP on the grounds that the item is being given chilled, and hence, the additional cost is for the electricity required for the same. People too have been ignoring this nominal overcharging.

The notification states that there cannot be two MRPs, and hence, they will take immediate action against those found indulging in this.

*In defence*
Sources in the Indian Hotel and Restaurants Association (AHAR), however, said the practice is as per the service provided. “If the sale of a packaged bottle is across the counter, the hotel should charge on MRP. But then, we also provide service through our waiters, and there’s the ambience; all that comes at a cost,” said a member of AHAR.

They claimed city hotels pay value-added tax and service tax on alcohol and other packaged products over the MRP. In five-star hotels, these taxes take the cost to almost 43 per cent above the MRP.

The Legal Metrology Organisation, however, said the rule would be applicable to all municipal corporation-graded eating houses/permit rooms, as well as star hotels selling alcohol, cold drinks and packaged commodities.

*'A welcome move'*
The Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (MGP) has hailed the decision and said that it is also starting a complaint helpline for people who are victims of this practice. “Consumers asked to pay inflated MRPs at airports, hotels, multiplexes should complain to the Legal Metrology department,” said Shirish Deshpande, MGP.

A Haryana-based model has come under the scanner for filing a series of fake rape and molestation cases across the country. Besides political leaders and government officials, she had also levelled charges against cops.

*BJP leader conned*
BJP youth leader Chirag Gupta, the woman’s latest victim, said she had been trying to extort Rs 5 crore from him. In her complaint against Gupta, filed in April this year, the woman said she had met the BJP leader through a matrimony site and Gupta had promised to marry her.

The woman said she later found out he was married and filed a rape case against him. Gupta, however, says he met the woman through a social networking website after she said she and her mother, Ishwar, were also BJP workers.

“Gupta’s wife filed a complaint against her at our police station. When I called her for investigations, she reported it to the DCP alleging I had sexually harassed and threatened her. An enquiry was set up against me. But, when I assured the DCP that I hadn’t met her, the enquiry was dropped,” said API Shivaji Bade, from Kurla PS.*Inspector Vidyanand Dahiya; (right) BJP youth leader Chirag Gupta*

*Multiple fake cases*
An RTI has revealed that the woman had also filed similar cases against various government officials across the country. She accused a Haryana forest officer, Vilas Fogat, of rape. She also filed a rape case against Vidyanand Dahiya, inspector of Hisar Civil Line police station, as he was the investigation a case against her.

The number of railway rowdies, especially youths, being caught on camera doing stunts on trains doesn’t seem to have gone down. And the railway police are at their wits’ end on how to stop this menace.

A GRP officer said, “We regularly patrol platforms, but festivals and Monday nights are particularly trying. These rowdies start their games the minute a train starts pull out of a station. And if we try to stop them, they kick us or abuse us. Afraid that they might fall down doing this, we have no option but to let them go.”

Thereafter, he called up the other accused and asked him to come to his house. They then dumped the girl’s body in a bag and kept it under a water tank in the neighbouring Haji Kasam Chawl. It was then that they planned to ask for the ransom and keep the cops busy for a long time. Reported by Mid-Day 18 hours ago.

Uruguay ex-striker Sebastian Abreu begins life at new club.. aged 40! *Rio de Janeiro:* Former Uruguay striker Sebastian "Loco" Abreu has said that his signing with Brazilian minnows Bangu represented "a good fit" as he extends his professional football career to a 23rd year.

Abreu, 40, was officially presented to the media on Tuesday, almost two months after the Rio state-league club announced his signing, reports Xinhua.

"I liked the eagerness of the board, who showed that I could be an important part of a winning project," Abreu told a press conference.

"I thought it would be a good fit, apart from coming back to Rio, which is a very special city."

Abreu was a free agent after helping El Tecla win El Salvador's league title last week with two goals in the final against Alianza.

Bangu will be the 24th club of Abreu's professional career, which started at Uruguay's Defensor Sporting Club in 1996.

It will be his second spell with a Rio de Janeiro-based side, having also represented Botafogo from 2010 to 2012.

Asked whether he could still be an important player aged 40, Abreu replied: "If you have doubts about my form, just take a look on YouTube."

Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim will miss the remaining two one-day internationals against New Zealand with a hamstring injury.

The first-choice stumper, also a key middle order batsman, suffered the injury during his team's defeat by 77 runs in the Boxing Day match at Christchurch. "We are looking at two weeks, anything before is a bonus," Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha told reporters on Wednesday.

"He's been one of the form batters as well as wicketkeeper in all formats, but injuries are part and parcel of the game."

Triple hundreds are the flavour of the season. After Karun Nair's record-breaking triple against England in Chennai recently, 26-year-old Samit Gohel, from the dairy hub Anand district in Gujarat, scored an unbeaten 359 in their Ranji Trophy quarter-final win over Odisha in Jaipur yesterday. Gujarat entered the semi-final for the first time since 1951.

*Also Read: What's common between run machines Samit Gohel and Karun Nair?*

Gohel became the highest scorer in first-class cricket as an opening batsman for his 359. He carried his bat through, breaking Bobby Abel's 117-year-old record. Abel, while opening the batting for Surrey, scored an unbeaten 357 against Somerset in 1899. Hanif Mohammad's 499 in the 1958-59 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy semi-final between Karachi and Bahawalpur, remains the highest score by an opener in first-class cricket. He was unfortunately run out one short of 500.

*In elite company*
Gohel is also the fourth joint-highest run-getter for India in first-class cricket behind Bhausaheb Nimbalkar (443*), Sanjay Manjrekar (377), Maruti Venkat Sridhar (366) and Vijay Merchant (359*).

Talking to mid-day from Jaipur after his heroic feat, Gohel said: "I was confident that I will get a big score this season. I was batting well in the earlier matches, but somehow I found myself in the zone in this one. I played session by session without putting too much pressure on myself."

*Remarkable transition*
On what went through his mind during his innings, Gohel said: "I was not thinking too much about anything. Our aim was to win the match and make it to the semis. After we got the first innings lead, things became a little easy. Our coach (Vijay Patel) and Parthiv bhai (skipper Parthiv Patel) told me to bat long and I just tried to do that. My fellow opener Priyan Panchal scored a triple ton this season and he has been an inspiration too," added the opener who had no clue about the records he broke along the way.

Gujarat head coach Vijay Patel wasn't exactly surprised by Gohel's long vigil at the crease. "Technically he is very sound, but he was a very defensive batsman who would play 150-200 balls to score 35-40 and get out. But we backed him because we knew he has the potential to be an asset to the team," said Patel.

Praising the opener, skipper Parthiv said: "It is great to see someone getting 300, and to create a world record is even better. I just helped him with the intent of scoring runs."Triple tons in Ranji trophy this season· *359* Samit Gohel (Guj) n 351* Swapnil Gugale (Mah) *

*Manchester: *Henrikh Mkhitaryan said his spectacular 'scorpion kick' volley in Manchester United's 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Monday had been a matter of instinct taking over.

The Armenian playmaker sealed victory at Old Trafford by diving beneath Zlatan Ibrahimovic's right-wing cross and flicking the ball past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with his right heel. The goal, reminiscent of former Colombia goalkeeper Rene Higuita's famous 'scorpion kick' save against England in 1995, was allowed to stand despite an apparent offside.

"I was expecting the ball in front of me, but I was already in front, so I got it behind me," Mkhitaryan said. "So the only thing I could do, it was a chance to hit it with the back-heel. I did it and I succeeded."

Manager Jose Mourinho was delighted to see Mkhitaryan back in action after missing out due to injury. "He has scored beautiful goals all his career," said Mourinho.

Mumbai's seasoned campaigner and crisis man Abhishek Nayar once again proved his worth by claming the remaining three wickets on the final day to beat Hyderabad by 30 runs in a closely-contested Ranji Trophy quarter-final in Raipur yesterday.

Resuming on 121-7 and needing 111 runs to register an improbable victory, Hyderabad fought well with a 64-run eighth-wicket stand between Balchander Anirudh and Chama Milind (29). However, Mumbai's bowling all-rounder Nayar squeezed Hyderabad's hopes of making it to the semis with a superb spell of seam bowling. Nayar dismissed Milind and Mohammed Siraj in the space of three deliveries. He struck again to complete the formalities by inducing an edge from No.11 Ravi Kiran (1) to skipper Aditya Tare behind the stumps.

Anirudh tried his best and added 16 runs for the last wicket, but was stranded after a fighting 84, which was studded with four hits to the fence and two sixes.

Nayar, who ended up with match figures of nine for 100 runs, came into the attack after the drinks break when Hyderabad required 50 runs to win with three wickets in hand. It is learnt that Nayar, during the break, went to the dressing room, where the atmosphere was very tense. But he returned to the ground telling his coach and support staff not to worry and that he will finish the job.

"It was really a tough day for us as Hyderabad played well in the first hour. We were under some pressure, as they did not lose a wicket till the 17th over.

"I had already made up my mind to get into the attack and also figure out how to break the partnership. I was eager to bowl and I am very happy that I took the remaining three wickets," Nayar told mid-day over the phone from Raipur yesterday.

Though Man of the Match Nayar contributed well with both bat and ball, he felt it was a complete team performance and that made the difference. "We won matches in such crunch situations earlier. If any team want to win a game, everyone has to contribute.

"Take for example this game. Aditya (Tare) scored half-centuries in both innings, Siddhesh (Lad) scored a ton in the first innings and 46 in the second, Vijay Gohil bowled well to pick up eight wickets in the match and some players took very good catches too.

"So, it's a result of the team's overall performance that helped us beat Hyderabad. Individual performances of one or two players can never earn you a victory," said the 33-year-old all-rounder.

The veteran cricketer (who figured in three ODIs for India in 2009) wants Mumbai's batting to come good in their semi-final clash against Tamil Nadu.

"Before heading for the all-important semi-final our batting remains a concern. But at the same time, I am confident that Shreyas Iyer and Surkaykumar Yadav (two batsmen who failed in this match) will play well in next game.

Who is Samit Gohel? Well, before Tuesday, virtually a limited few in India would have heard his name. But now Gujarat's 26-year-old opening batsman has become a household name and enjoying his moment in the sun after breaking a 117-year-old record in first-class cricket by notching up the highest score while carrying his bat through the innings of 359 not out during his team's Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Odisha.

While Hanif Mohammed's epic 499 remains the highest score by an opener in first-class cricket, no one has scored more than Gohel while remaining not out in his team's score of 641 in Jaipur.

Gohel in fact eclipsed the previous best of 357 by Surrey's Bobby Abel against Somerset way back in 1899 at the Kensington Oval ground.

WORLD RECORD!
Samit Gohel's 359* is the highest indv score by an opening bat while carrying his bat thro' the inns in first-class cricket!

— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) December 27, 2016

This is the second world record set by an Indian cricketer in two weeks. Only last week India's rising star Karun scored 303 not out off 381 balls with the help of 4 sixes and 32 hits to the boundary against England at Chepauk. In doing so, Nair became the first Indian batsman and the third in world to convert his maiden century into a triple hundred.

By the way, Gohel's innings and Karnataka's Karun Nair 303 not out share a lot of commonalities. Like nair, Gohel converted his maiden double hundred, though his was in first class cricket, into a triple hundred.

Both are young -- while Gohel is 26, Nair is 25. Thus the two are the future of Indian cricket.

Both Gohel and Nair come from middle-class background.

Gohel now has the seventh highest score in first-class history. Those above him on this illustrious list include some cricket legends like Hanif Mohammad, Don Bradman and Brian Lara. His score itself is an improvement on WG Grace’s 344 made in 1876. He is also tied with legendary Vijay Merchant for the fourth highest individual score in Ranji history. It is also the first time in 81 years that an opener scored a triple century and carried his bat through an innings apart from being the highest unbeaten total by an opener in first-class cricket.

Nair during his epic knock also achieved some phenomenal records. He became only the second Indian to score a triple ton after Virender Sehwag. It was the highest individual score by an Indian at number 5 or lower, beating the previous best of 224 by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It was the highest individual maiden Test ton score by an Indian beating Vinod Kambli's 224, also against England. The triple century was achieved in only his 3rd Test innings - the least to get to 300+. The previous best was England's Len Hutton, in 9 innings He is only the the 3rd batsman in Test history to convert a maiden ton into a triple century. West Indies' Garry Sobers (365 not out Vs Pakistan in Kingston, 1958) and Bob Simpson (311 Vs England in Old Trafford, 1964) of Australia were the others.

His effort saw Gujarat score 641, which is their highest-ever total in Ranji history. They went past 640 they made against Maharashtra in 1995-96.  *Karun Nair celebrates his century against England at Chepauk. Pic/ AFP*

Similarly Nair's effort saw India achieve their highest ever Test total of 759 for 7 against England on the penultimate day of the fifth and final match at Chennai.

While some may question the link between these two unassuming Indian cricketers. It must be noted that the link is just an effort to highlight the rise of 'Young India' and about two cricketers who play the game with passion. The duo have also rewriten the record books and taken the world of cricket by surprise.

While it remains to be seen how the duo do in the future, we can only hope that they go from strength to strength.

*Gohel didn't know about world record*

"I did not know it was a World Record. The idea was to bat as long as possible. Coach sir (Vijay Patel) and Parthiv bhai (skipper Parthiv Patel) ne bola thaa lamba khelo. I just tried to do that. I am happy that I could bat this long. Obviously this is the greatest day of my life. I am actually still not able to express myself," the right-handed batsman told PTI after his 723-ball-knock, which had 45 boundaries and a six at a strike rate of almost 50.

His father Bhanubhai Patel is a real estate property dealer and till now Gohel is happy to call himself a "professional cricketer".

"My father has a small-time property business. Not very big. Till date, I have only concentrated on cricket. But yes, I am searching for a government job. I have applied for sports quota job in Income Tax department as well as Dena Bank. Let's see what happens," said the shy boy from Gujarat's dairy hub Anand, who lives with his parents and wife.

"Actually, I have not yet been able to call my family and inform them about the world record," said Gohel, who is the first triple centurion opener in last 81 years in first-class cricket to carry his bat through.

For the record, Gujarat made it to the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy.

A Close victory against Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final yesterday taught Mumbai "an important lesson", according to head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who felt that experience will help the 41-time champions overcome hurdles during their crucial semi-final clash against Tamil Nadu which begins on New Year's Day.

Mumbai's top order batsmen, including seasoned campaigners Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav failed to click in both innings. The new opening pair of Kevin D'Almeida and Praful Waghela too were unable to make an impact in the game.

"Even though we beat Hyderabad today in a closely contested encounter, they taught us an important lesson in Raipur. Before our semi-final clash, these lessons would help us while playing against a comparatively tougher competitor like Tamil Nadu," Pandit told mid-day yesterday.

The defending champions' coach felt his main batsmen's performance will be vital if Mumbai have to make it to another final. "Our batting should click in the next game. I hope our main batsmen contribute in the semi-final. In earlier games too they had to bat well, but didn't.

"I expect them to put up a good show at this crucial juncture of the tournament. We have discussed these points in our team meetings as well. Let's hope for the best," Pandit added.

The former India stumper heaped praise on Mumbai's bowling all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and young left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil's match-winning performance. "Abhishek is an experienced campaigner. He knows how to handle pressure and did it by taking three vital wickets, apart from his all-round performance in the match. Vijay also bowled well to claim five wickets on Monday.

Hyderabad were on the verge of causing a massive upset against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals yesterday when overnight batsmen B Anirudh (84 not out) and CV Milind (6) added 64 runs in the morning session of the final day to narrow the 232-run target to 47. But thanks to Abhishek Nayar’s (5-40) heroics with the ball, Hyderabad found themselves 30 runs short in the end. The 22-year-old Anirudh, who top scored for his side, reckoned that losing the top-order cheaply in the fourth innings turned out to be the turning point in the game. Hyderabad were 121 for seven, chasing 232 for victory.

"In the first innings, we got early wickets and we did bat well too. But in the fourth innings, we lost wickets in clusters and Mumbai got the momentum. They are the current champs and have the experienced Nayar and Thakur (Shardul) in their ranks. Our inexperience came to bite us," the Chennai-born southpaw, who struck four boundaries and two sixes during his 187-ball knock, told mid-day over the phone yesterday.

Anirudh, a product of St John’s Cricket Foundation (Secunderabad), where former India cricketer VVS Laxman also trained in his younger days, was unable to weave his magic with the willow in the first innings. Hyderabad were bowled out for 280, giving Mumbai a vital 14-run lead.

"In the first innings, I scored four runs. I let the team down. If I had scored, we could have got a lead," he said.

However, Anirudh was happy his team gave the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions a good fight.

*London:* Antonio Conte wants his Chelsea side to build on their club record 12 straight wins by marching on to the Premier League title.

Should the Blues, who beat Bournemouth 3-0 on Boxing Day, defeat Stoke and Tottenham in their next two games, they will equal Arsenal's Premier League record of 14 successive wins.*Antonio Conte*

But statistical landmarks matter little to Conte, who wants his side to win the Premier League trophy. "I prefer to win the title than the record," Conte, who was appointed in the summer, told Chelsea TV.

"Records are important, but not all. It's important to write history only when you win. To be in the history of the club and to win 12 games in a row is fantastic. But with the players we want to continue."

*London:* Yaya Toure admits he feels reborn after returning from exile to play a key role in Manchester City's Premier League title challenge.

Toure, appeared destined to leave City after being frozen out by Pep Guardiola earlier in the season. But the Ivory Coast midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance in the space of just six weeks.

The former Barcelona star delivered his latest impressive display as City overcame Hull 3-0 at the KCOM Stadium on Boxing Day to stay in touch with leaders Chelsea.
"I look like a kid, just enjoying playing football and helping my teammates and the fans. It's very important for me," Toure said.

*Melbourne:* Opening batsman Azhar Ali led the way as Pakistan consolidated their first innings on a rain-hit second day of the second Test against Australia in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Only 50.3 overs were possible after 50.5 overs were bowled on Monday's opening day as rain again curtailed play. At the close after rain forced an early finish, the tourists resuming at 142 for four were 310 for six with Azhar providing the foundations. Azhar was unbeaten on 139 with Mohammad Amir hitting a breezy 28 off 23 balls with six fours trying to lift the scoring rate after the dismissals of Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed. Australia still believe the weather won't prevent a result in the match.

Medium pacer Karan Vasa (8-39) bowled a phenomenal spell to help Campion School (Fort) to a seven-wicket win over St Xavier's (Fort) in their MSSA-organised Giles Shield Plate Group semi-final at Parsee Gym yesterday.

St Xavier's were bowled out for a paltry 99 in 31.1 overs. Skipper Karan bowled a perfect line, thus creating pressure on his opponents.

He also took two catches off his own bowling. For St Xavier's, Mohd Ammar Qureshi top scored with 35, while Sai Deorukhkar scored 18. Xavier's did not make full use of the good batting conditions and were struggling at 89-6 in 23.1 overs as Campions were on top of their game.

In reply, Campion openers Adit Dani and Shaurya Gupta got off to a good start scoring 26 and 20 respectively. In the end, Tanay Parmar remained unbeaten on 18 while Karan was not out on 20 with four boundaries.

Campion School were the better side as they finished off with 101-3 in 21.3 overs. Off spinner Mohd Ammar Qureshi and left-arm spinner Anuj Chorge took a wicket apiece. Campion will play the final.*Antonio Da Silva’s Ved Kerkar (left) and Om Kantak*

Any sense of achievement the Sri Lankans might have felt was quickly swept away as South African opening bowlers Vernon Philander and Kyle Abbott ripped into their batting.

*Sunil Chhetri*

*New Delhi:* Amid uncertainty over the proposed merger of Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League, ace striker Sunil Chhetri on Tuesday said a unified league will open up windows for the national team to play in more FIFA friendlies and give a shot at improving its ranking. "I want to play all 13 FIFA dates in a year. We need that. That's where the unified league is going to come in handy. We should prioritise that, and ensure the national team gets a chance to play more games. Hope we play bigger opponents and away from home as we have done really poorly as a nation away from home. Win or lose, that will at least give us a chance to improve as a footballing nation," Chhetri said.

"Who would not like to see a merger. One league with more teams, more months is what we all wish for. There are few technicalities and I am sure they are looking into it. Eventually we will see one league. A unified league." Having won the SAFF Championship as national team member, reached a historic AFC Cup final with Bengaluru FC and semifinal in ISL with Mumbai City FC, Chhetri called 2016 his finest year. "You can say that 2016 was my finest. It went well for the national team, started by winning the SAFF Cup, we reached the finals of AFC Cup, we reached the semis of ISL. I think it was a fruitful season," Chhetri said. "I have very small time targets, say 10 days, one week. I am only thinking about the Lajong (I-league) game, we are playing them at home. That's my target."

Asked if Indian players should strive to play club football overseas, Chhetri said, "If the players have reached a certain level and he thinks he can improve more, then he
should go. Not only in India it's everywhere. Gurpreet has done it very nicely, I have seen him grow up." When told about Praful Patel's desire for India to qualify for 2022 World Cup, he said, "I think we have to come in the first 10 in Asia first. To come to 10 is going to be so, so difficult. Thailand was with us but now they are playing in the last qualifying round though they are getting hammered by some teams. We have to qualify for the Asia Cup and stay there, try to get 15th, 16th position in Asia and then think about the final journey."

Asked if Indian football should take a leaf out of Bengaluru FC's book -- they have won two I-league titles and one Federation Cup since making their debut three seasons ago, Chhetri said, "We are doing the right things, trying our best, all of us are in sync, from owner Sajjan Jindal to the ball boy.

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/apr/30Geeta-babita-s.jpg

*New Delhi:* The centre of public attention following the release of a movie based on their life, the Phogat sisters Geeta and Babita are determined not to lose their focus in their pursuit of a medal at the next Olympics.

"We have started our preparations. Our aim for the year is to do well in the Asian Championship and the World Championship. In 2018 we have the Asian Games and the CWG but our ultimate goal is to win a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics," Geeta told IANS in New Delhi on Tuesday.

"I will strive hard for the Olympic medal because that will be the most prized possession of my life."

The life story of Geeta -- the first female wrestler to represent India at the Olympics -- her sister Babita and their father-cum-coach Mahavir Singh Phogat became the centre of public attention following the release of 'Dangal', a movie featuring Bollywood star Aamir Khan.

Following the release of the movie, both sisters -- who are a part of the UP franchise in the upcoming second edition of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) -- have been very busy with movie promotions.

But the Phogat sisters do not let the busy schedule affect their training.

"We cannot hamper our training at all as we are here because of wrestling and without training our performance got affected. Yes it happens we train once rather than twice a day. Today also we attended our training in the morning and came here," Babita, who is part of the UP Dangal team in the PWL-2 with Geeta, Amit Dhankar, Amit Dahiya and Mausam Khatri, said.

The Phogat family are revelling in the success of 'Dangal' and the fame and adulation that comes with it.

*Babita Kumari*

"People used to know Geeta and Babita earlier as well but with name and not by face much. But after this movie got released, people recognise us very easily. We also became celebrities. We became very famous instantly," Geeta said.

"The work on the movie started after I won the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold when the movie's director Nitesh Tiwary came to our national camp in Patiala and we had a chat at a nearby coffee shop. It took around six years to make a movie and it was worth it," she added.

Congratulations to Samit Gohel for breaking the 117 year old record in 1st-class cricket by scoring 359* in quarter final of Ranji Trophy. pic.twitter.com/S29bvmXD8P

— Amit Shah (@AmitShah) December 27, 2016*Jaipur:* Gujarat's Samit Gohel crafted a world record in first-class cricket for an opener, knocking off 359 not out against Odisha in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final on Tuesday. This is the highest score by an opener anywhere, remaining unbeaten.

During his 723-ball marathon innings, the 26-year-old right-hander eclipsed English batsman Bobby Abel's record of 357 not out for Surrey against Somerset in 1899.

Samit's record-breaking 359 saw Gujarat breeze into the Ranji Trophy semifinals on the basis of a first innings lead against Odisha. Gujarat, who had all but ensured their spot in the semifinals going into day five, ended with a mammoth 641 in their second innings after resuming the day at 514 for eight. The huge total was largely because of the giant effort of Gohel, who broke a 117-year-old record in First-Class cricket by making the highest score while carrying his bat through the innings of 359 not out. Gujarat meet first-timers Jharkhand in the semifinal to be played in Nagpur from January 1-5.

*Chennai*: India's premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin says he wished he was part of recently released Tamil sports drama "Chennai 28 II", a successful sequel to 2007 Tamil film "Chennai 600028". He said the film put his life on rewind mode.

A story about friendship set against the backdrop of gully cricket, both the parts were directed by Venkat Prabhu.

"What a wonderful movie 'Chennai 28 II'. Completely put my life on rewind mode. Genuinely felt I could have been a part of it," Ashwin, who was recently named the International Cricket Council (ICC) Player of the Year, wrote on his Twitter page on Tuesday.

Touched by Ashwin's words, Venkat Prabhu tweeted: "Thank you so much. Missed casting you. Will confirm you for 'Chennai 28 III'."

*Raipur*: Mumbai's 'Man of all Seasons' Abhishek Nayar once again brought his best out in pressure situation to guide the defending champions to the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy beating Hyderabad by 30 runs in a closely-contested last-eight encounter.

Needing 232 to win, Hyderabad were dismissed for 201 on the final day as Nayar and left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil (5/64) doing the damage.

Top-order batsman Balachander Aniruddh's dogged unbeaten 84 off 187 balls with four boundaries and two sixes was not enough with senior-most pro Nayar's 5 for 40 enabling the title favourites to survive a scare despite being in the pole position going into the final day.

All the three wickets were taken by the veteran all-rounder who finished with match figures of 9 for 100 and also scored a half-century once again proving that who has been Mumbai's most effective match-winner for a decade now.

Starting the day at 121 for 7 needing another 111 runs to win, Hyderabad with their No 3 Aniruddh at crease fought well with Chama Milind (29) adding 64 runs for the eighth wicket with Aniruddh. While Mumbai needed three good deliveries, a score of 185 for 7 was a bit worrying before Nayar bowled his militarymedium stuff.

The man with the 'Golden arm for Mumbai' and the most ungainly action first got Milind to edge one to Adirya Tare and within two balls trapped Mohammed Siraj leg before. Aniruddh now had a job of shielding No 11 Ravi Kiran (1) as well as score some runs. They did conjure up 16 runs for the final wicket before Ravi Kiran also edged to Tare as Mumbai once again made it to the last four of the competition.

*Melbourne:* Pakistan rode on a magnificent unbeaten century from opener Azhar Ali (139 not out) to end the second day at 310/6 against Australia as incessant rain continued to disrupt the proceedings of the Boxing Day second cricket Test here on Tuesday.

Pacer Mohammed Amir (28 not out) was at the crease with Azhar after rain forced an early close of play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here.

Resuming the day at 142/4, Pakistan began the second morning positively with the overnight duo of Azhar and Asad Shafiq (50) ensuring that the team did not lose early wickets.

With Azhar on 96, the first rain break came along, causing a brief intermission of 15 minutes. Yet, there was no lapse of concentration as the opener completed his century in the second over after resumption.

After reaching his 12th Test century, Azhar carried on with Shafiq, who by then had reached his half century as the duo continued to frustrate the home side with a gritty 115-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Australia skipper Steve Smith's desperate attempts at getting the crucial breakthrough didn't yield any results and with the rain playing hide and seek, Smith was also hesitant to take the second new ball in the morning session.

With 10 minutes still left in the session, the umpire decided to force early lunch after a brief discussion with Smith, the reason for which remained unclear.

The next two hours were completely washed out as both the teams waited in vain for the persistent rain to subside completely.

With the second session completely wasted, Australia immediately opted for the new ball and struck twice.

Soon after completing his half century off 123 deliveries, Shafiq was dismissed by pacer Jackson Bird, who took his tally to three wickets.

Pacer Josh Hazlewood then added to Pakistan's woes by inducing an outside edge off wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed's (10) bat to be caught by Matt Renshaw at first slip.

Struggling at 268/6, seamer Mohammed Amir joined Azhar and the duo complimented each other well to take the team to 310/6 until the downpour forced an early close to the day.

Azhar's 287-ball knock was laced with 12 boundaries while Amir's 23-ball cameo included six hits to the fence.

WWE Raw main event saw Roman Reigns defend his WWE United States title against WWE Universal champion Kevin Owens. Reigns went on to successfully defend his title against the champion despite interference from Chris Jericho.

Roman Reigns' friend and former Shield partner Seth Rollins came to the aid of Reigns during the WWE Raw main event match. Seth Rollins mocked Triple H's move before hitting Kevin Owens with the Pedigree. Roman Reigns then hit the spear on Chris Jericho as the two men stood tall.

WWE Raw commissioner Stephanie McMahon earlier in the show burned down WWE fans chanting 'CM Punk'. She poked fun at the former WWE wrestler by telling the fans 'if they could keep it up for 2 minutes and 15 seconds they would last more than CM Punk. This was a direct jab at CM Punk's UFC debut in which he lost in 2 min 14 sec.

Seth Rollins also faced Braun Strowman in a match which was interrupted by Sami Zayn. Braun Strowman then chased Zayn into the crowd. Jericho thereafter, entered the ring and hit the codebreaker on Rollins.

Enzo Amore and Cass came out and took a dig at WWE star Rusev. Neville defeated TJ Perkins in their cruiserweight division match.

*Bangalore:* Coach Vimal Kumar yesterday said there is no need for ace shuttler Saina Nehwal to stay away from playing Premier Badminton League (PBL) as the badminton league is not a "strenuous affair" like international tournaments.

"There is no need for Saina to stay away from playing PBL. It adds to her career profile.*Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal. Pic/PTI*

"The league will not be a strenuous affair because it is not as competitive as international tournaments," said Kumar, when asked whether it would be prudent to rest Saina as she has just recovered from an injury.

Saina endured a difficult season this year as she recovered from a foot injury to win the Australian Open but suffered a major knee injury around the Rio Olympics to bow out of the event in the second round.

Kumar said the PBL is not played for two months as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"PBL is not like IPL or any other cricket league, which goes on for two months. It goes on for two weeks, which gets a lot of attention," he said.

Moreover, PBL will not affect the training session of Saina because there are as many as 16 international events, which will keep her fit, Kumar said. "PBL will in no way affect the training programme of the Indian women's singles star because there are at 15 to 16 international tournaments," he said.

*Liverpool:* Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes a little more luck on the injury front is all that is separating his team from Premier League leaders Chelsea as the Reds prepare to face Stoke City today.

The Anfield club spent Christmas in second place in the Premier League table but trailed Chelsea by six points as they struggle to stay in touch with Antonio Conte's in-form side.

Liverpool have only lost twice all season but are currently missing the influential Philippe Coutinho as they prepare for the first of two home games before the end of the year.

"I am pretty sure that until now Chelsea are maybe the team that have had the most luck with injuries. We lost Phil and Daniel (Sturridge) and Danny Ings in difficult moments when you really could use them," Klopp told Sky Sports News. "If it's Hazard and Costa at Chelsea, is it the same afterwards?"

*London:* Manchester United stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions with a 3-1 Premier League home win over Sunderland but their coach Jose Mourinho was not entirely happy with Monday's performance at a festive Old Trafford.

United survived several scares in an end-to-end opening period before Dutch defender Daley Blind fired them ahead with a powerful 39th-minute strike for his first goal of the season.

"I didn't like the first half performance. I like the result," Mourinho said after late strikes from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealed his team's win.

After missing four games due to a finger injury, Mumbai's left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil is on fire. He made a strong comeback to claim five wickets in the second innings and put the defending champions in the driver's seat in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Hyderabad at Raipur yesterday. The 21-year-old Gohil's 5 for 28 is his best first-class performance so far. At stumps on Day Four, Hyderabad were struggling at 121 for seven chasing a 232-run target.

*'I was under pressure'*
Gohil credited skipper Aditya Tare for boosting his confidence yesterday morning. "It's really difficult to play in such a crucial match after injury. I too didn't expect a quick comeback. I was under pressure, but skipper Aditya Tare and coach Chandrakant Pandit assured me that I can perform well. Captain told me not to worry about wickets and just bowl the right length. I also visualised my earlier performances on Sunday evening, which I think played an important role in today's success," Gohil told mid-day over the phone from Raipur yesterday.*Left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil*

Mumbai's bowling coach Omkar Salvi also helped Gohil fine-tune his bowling. "Though I got three wickets in the first innings, I was bowling very quickly. Omkar Salvi sir told me to bowl slower and at my normal bowling speed. It really worked today as I got three of my five wickets with such deliveries," Gohil added. Bowling all-rounder Abhishek Nayar also contributed with two for 27. Hyderabad's No. 3 batsman Balchander Anirudh (40 not out) stood firmly against the Mumbai attack, facing 111 balls with one hit over the fence and one boundary.

*London:* Leicester gave out around 30,000 Jamie Vardy masks to supporters ahead of their game against Everton yesterday in a move widely regarded as being in response to the striker's ban.

The forward is suspended for three games after the club's appeal failed to get his red card against Stoke last week overturned by the Football Association.

The move is thought to be a public show of disappointment against the decision — with even chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha calling the red card "unfair" on his Instagram account — although the club offered no comment.

Vardy was given his marching orders after referee Craig Pawson ruled he had dived in on Mame Biram Diouf during the Foxes' 2-2 draw at Stoke last week.

*Watford:* Sam Allardyce was "convinced" his side should have had a second penalty after being denied victory in his first game as Crystal Palace manager.

Troy Deeney's 100th strike for Watford earned a share of the points after Yohan Cabaye's opener, but Christian Benteke missed from the spot before Wilfried Zaha was booked for diving inside the area. Mark Clattenburg's decision on Zaha caused frustration for Allardyce, who claimed his Palace side deserved better from the game having turned in an improved performance.

Allardyce said: "I looked at all the incidents and there is no doubt in my mind. It's a penalty for me, but maybe (Clattenburg) didn't want to give three (penalties) today. "I'm a little disappointed in the decision process from one of the best referees in the world today."

However despite the obvious disappointment, Allardyce was encouraged by the display. "In terms of results we played very, very well and it's our own fault we didn't get the three points," he said.

2016 is truly Ravichandran Ashwin's year. He is living a dream. On Monday it was revealed that after being declared the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year, he has received yet another prize. The prize the right-handed off-spinner has received is that of a second child. On Monday, Ashwin’s wife Prithi Ashwin took to Twitter to announce that she had given birth to the couple's second child.

The baby girl was born on December 21, a day after India thrashed England in fifth Test in Chennai to clinch the series 4-0, and the good news wasn't shared with the world since they didn't want anything to take away from Ashwin's ICC Cricketer of the Year honour.

The couple, who married in 2011, already have another girl -- Akhira -- who was born in 2015.

The offspinner has had a brilliant run in 2016 having taken 72 wickets from 12 Tests and won man-of-the-series awards in four successive series - against Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies and New Zealand.

*Ashwin tweeted this on Christmas day:*

One small request, please do not tag my wife in all your funny tweets. She has better things to look after, although I am 😂over it.

I delivered carrom baby #2 on the 21st. She waited out a State-wide shut down thanks to the cyclone AND 5 days of Test cricket at Chepauk👩‍👧

— Prithi Ashwin (@prithinarayanan) December 26, 2016

*In a series of dramatic tweets, Prithi said that she was worried that her water would break at Chepauk and she would have to deliver at the stadium. She explained that since Ashwin had just won the 'Cricketer of the year' award, they didn't want to steal the offie's moment, they delayed the announcement.*

I thought my water would break when we won that game and I was going to have the baby at Chepauk. Now, THAT would have been some story.

— Prithi Ashwin (@prithinarayanan) December 26, 2016

*She called the girl 'Pavilion terrace baby' and said that Santa had been kind enough to gift them her. But bid adieu to sleep, concluding that it wouldn't be her companion anymore in 2017.*

http://images.mid-day.com/images/2016/dec/27Suranga-Lakmal-s.jpg

*Port Elizabeth:* Suranga Lakmal took four wickets and gave Sri Lanka a slight edge on the first day of the first Test against South Africa at St George's Park yesterday.

Lakmal took four for 62 in 23 overs as South Africa reached 267 for six at the end of the day on which they failed to capitalise on a century-opening partnership between Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar.

Opening bowler Lakmal pegged back the hosts by taking the first three wickets and later dismissed South African captain Faf du Plessis. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath took two wickets, including that of JP Duminy, South Africa's top scorer with a fluent 63.

When Du Plessis won the toss and decided to bat on a well-grassed but slow pitch, it was anticipated that the first two hours would be the most difficult for batsmen. Cook (59) and Elgar (45) were seldom troubled as they reached 92 for no wicket at lunch. They started cautiously and left the ball well before gradually lifting the tempo. Reported by Mid-Day 7 hours ago.
