Plymouth man on rape and sexual assault charges This is Plymouth -- A MAN accused of raping a girl has appeared at Plymouth Crown Court. Geoffrey Rooney, aged 38, faced a judge to answer four counts involving sexual abuse and possession of indecent images of children. He allegedly twice raped a girl aged under 13 in Cheshire on December 27 and December 28. Rooney, of Camperdown Street in Devonport, is also accused of sexually assaulting the girl on December 27. He is finally charged with taking 13 indecent photographs of a child. Two of the images were level four and 11 were level three, with level five considered to be of the worst nature. Rooney, who appeared over the videolink from Exeter Prison, did not indicate any pleas to the offences. Judge Paul Darlow remanded him in custody until April 28, when he will be expected to plead guilty or not guilty. Rooney was arrested as part of a police operation on January 9. Imprisoned teacher who ran off with pupil is moved to Dartmoor jail This is Devon -- A jailed teacher who ran away with a 16-year-old schoolgirl has been transferred to Dartmoor prison. Jeremy Forrest, 31, is currently serving a five-and-a-half year sentence for sexual offences and abduction after fleeing to France with the girl when she was just 15. The schoolgirl who ran away with jailed teacher Forrest has reportedly written three 'love notes' to him in prison saying she wants to get back together with him when he is freed. According to reports, the girl, now aged 16, has sent Forrest three letters saying she still cares for him and wants to rekindle their relationship. However, when authorities at Ashfield prison in Bristol refused to let him read the messages, he complained - apparently prompting him to be moved to the Dartmoor jail in Princetown. The decision by prison bosses to prevent Forrest from reading the letters came after social workers banned the girl - who cannot be named for legal reasons - from speaking to him until she is 18. The disgraced teacher, who was told the letters had been sent, is understood to have complained to prison authorities, demanding to know if they had broken the rules by confiscating the letters without having carried out a risk assessment. A source told The Sun: 'The girl has written three letters to him, which have been taken. She wants to be in contact with him. 'They are about wanting to be with him. They are warm messages to him. They're not dumping letters. She wants to continue a relationship with him.' Forrest's family believe that the decision to move him from Ashfield to Dartmoor is a direct result of the row over the letters, after he demanded to know whether the correct procedures had been followed when prison chiefs withheld the notes from him. It had previously been reported that the schoolgirl had 'dumped' the teacher after finding a boyfriend her own age, but then broke up with her new lover because she still had feelings for Forrest. The Prison Service has refused to comment on the reports of the girl's love letters. Forrest triggered an international manhunt last summer when he fled with the girl. He had groomed her when she was one of his 14-year-old pupils at Bishop Bell School in Eastbourne, East Sussex. After taking her virginity one week after her 15th birthday in his marital home, they left for France, using the names Jack Dean and Gemma Grant. At first, the girl's devastated family feared she had been kidnapped but soon after CCTV footage showed her with her arms around her teacher on board a ferry from Dover to Calais. They were on the run for eight days before being found in Bordeaux where he was arrested in front of her. He was convicted of child abduction and five counts of sexual activity with a child at Lewes Crown Court in June. The girl has reportedly confided in friends that she is desperate to speak to the former teacher. After Forrest was jailed, she said: 'I love Jeremy so much. I don't want anyone else. I want to spend the rest of my life with him and maybe once he's out, we can marry and have children.' The college student, now 16, claimed she instigated their escape to France, adding: 'If anything, I groomed him.' Forrest, who will have to sign the sex offenders' register for life, has been divorced by his wife, Emily, 32, after she cited 'unreasonable behaviour' in divorce papers. The former couple are believed to have sold the family home and divided the proceedings. Reported by This is 9 hours ago.

This is Somerset --

An 87-year-old man has been sent to prison after pleading guilty to a series of historic sex attacks on a girl. Richard Gilmore, from East Drive in Blunsdown, Wiltshire, was given a three-year sentence at Swindon Crown Court after admitting five counts of indecent assault and another of gross indecency on the girl, which started when she was seven. Police chiefs in Swindon said the case showed that historic sex abuse allegations will be taken seriously by detectives, and successful prosecutions are possible.

"Firstly, I would like to praise the bravery of the victim in this case and the courage she has shown in coming forward to report these crimes," said DC James Newbery, of Wiltshire police.

"This case goes to show that, regardless of the passage of time that has elapsed since the period of offending, the criminal can still be brought to justice." Reported by This is 20 hours ago.

Tean Facebook predator Thomas Mayers jailed after pestering girls for sex This is Staffordshire --

FARM worker Thomas Mayers has been locked up for more than six years after pestering two young girls – aged 12 and 13 – into having sex with him.

Mayers asked the girls to send him photos of themselves naked and invited them to his home.

The 20-year-old started chatting to the 12-year-old on Facebook, asking for intimate photos and repeatedly inviting her over. She sent him pictures 'because he would not leave her alone,' Stafford Crown Court heard.

When she did go to the house, Mayers started kissing her as they sat on a sofa and pestered her for sex. Stephen Bailey, prosecuting, said: "She told him she was too young, but the defendant just said 'you'll be fine'."

The girl did not know what to do, so said 'okay' and they had sex on his bed. Around the same time, a 13-year-old girl met Mayers at a local park.

He asked her for photos, but she refused. However the girl did go to Mayers's home and had sex in his bed. On a subsequent occasion, Mayers had sex with her in a barn.

Police arrested him six months later, and Mayers claimed he did not know one girl was only 12 and that the 13-year-old looked older.

Mr Bailey said that during the commission of these offences, Mayers was cautioned by the police for having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl.

Mayers, of Main Road, Hollington, near Tean, admitted one charge of statutory child rape, two charges of sexual activity with a child and three other sexual offences involving the two girls.

Sending Mayers to youth custody for 81 months, Judge Amjad Nawaz told him: "You knew how old these girls were. They could not have given the impression they were significantly older. You had effectively pestered them to send photos having gained their confidence.

"When the 12-year-old told you she was too young and you told her she would be fine as though you were doing her a favour, it's singularly unattractive. The caution ought to have been a warning to you, but it failed to have the effect."

Mayers was also made subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order banning him from living with girls under 16 and unsupervised contact with girls under 18.

Michael Grey, defending, said Mayers was only 19 himself when he abused the girls.

He added: "Why did he not heed the caution? His instruction was he was more concerned with his parents. He had to leave his mother's house and had to live with his grandparents. As part of the caution, he was sat down with a police officer and had explained what his behaviour meant to the girl." Reported by This is 16 hours ago.

Health ministry acts after girl diagnosed with disease in one of three countries where polio remains endemic

Afghan officials have launched a polio vaccination campaign after a young girl from Kabul was diagnosed with the disease – the capital's first case since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are the only countries in the world where polio remains endemic. But the number of cases have declined significantly in Afghanistan in recent years.

Dr Kaneshka Baktash, spokesman for the Afghan public health ministry, said on Tuesday that a three-year-old girl from eastern Kabul had contracted polio and was partially paralysed. He said the girl had been diagnosed in Pakistan, where she was brought by her family after falling ill.

Baktash said the ministry had launched a vaccination campaign across the capital and in the area where the girl was living. Reported by guardian.co.uk 16 hours ago.

Sex offender teacher Jeremy Forrest held at Ashfield Prison near Bristol

Sex offender teacher Jeremy Forrest held at Ashfield Prison near Bristol This is Bristol -- A maths teacher who was jailed after eloping to France with one of his students was held at the new prison for sex offenders in Pucklechurch. Jeremy Forrest, 31, hit international headlines when he fled with the then 15-year-old girl in September 2012. While he was at Ashfield, which for years was home to young offenders, according to The Sun newspaper the girl wrote positive letters to Forrest, but the prison did not allow him to read them. Forrest, who taught at Bishop Bell School in East Sussex, first kissed the girl when she was 14. The pair had sex after she turned 15. When police were alerted they fled to France by ferry, travelling under false names. While on the continent they dyed their hair, stayed in budget hotels and touted bogus CVs in a bid to land bar work. They spent seven days on the run before being caught in an undercover police sting in Bordeaux. Last year, Forrest was jailed for five-and-a-half years at Lewes Crown Court for child abduction and sexual activity with a child. He is due to be released next year. Afterwards the girl said: "I love Jeremy so much. I want to spend the rest of my life with him and maybe once he's out, we can marry and have children." But social workers have banned her from having contact with him until she turns 18 and, several months ago, she was reported to have had a boyfriend nearer her age. According to the Daily Express, Forrest has now been moved to Dartmoor prison in Devon and has written to the newspaper claiming that a ban on contacting the girl breaches his human rights. Forrest retrained as a cook and started a self-funded Open University degree while at Ashfield. The Prison Service said it did not comment on individual inmates. Reported by This is 15 hours ago.

Sochi figure-skating costumes: a geisha, Romeo and Juliet, and Schindler's List

Olympic kit typically highlights nationality and athleticism, but figure-skating costumes make reference to cultural heritage and performance

Olympic kit is often tediously predictable. Outfits highlight nationality and athleticism, with skintight blues and reds typically dominating. Nationality is typically reduced to the colours of the flag, with perhaps only token acknowledgment of other aspects of cultural identity.

According to Jackie Hogan, professor of sociology at Bradley University, the Olympics aspire to be a "great equaliser; that is, each competitor is said to be judged on performance alone rather than on traits such as ethnicity, gender, and class." However, she continues, the Olympics actually "serve to reinforce these inequalities" with overt displays of nationalism, not least in competitors' clothes. Flaglike outfits reinforce a contradiction between the IOC's values of "peace and equality" and the fierce patriotism of participants and spectators. [1]

It is perhaps for this reason that costumes for the Sochi Winter Olympics present more subtle displays of national identity than have been seen at previous events. Attempts have been made to tone down the overt presence of flag symbolism. Royal blues and scarlet reds have been darkened to navy and burgundy. Even so, flags and their motifs remain a dominant feature. The colours may have been given a whitewashed appearance, but stars and stripes are still prominent on the sleeves of Jamie Anderson, the winner of the gold medal for slopestyle snowboarding, while the British bronze medallist, Jenny Jones, bore slices of the Union Jack.

One sport is an exception: figure skating. At the team event this weekend, there was no hint of a flag on the ice rink. Nationality was present in the choice of costume but, unlike in other events, it was expressed via cultural heritage. Cathy Reed of Japan expressed her nationality with a costume loosely based on a geisha's kimono, and in doing so made reference to a long cultural history of performance arts.

Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri made an indirect reference to their home country of Italy, dressed as Romeo and Juliet, but it felt incidental. More than nationality, these costumes provoked connotations of romance and storytelling. They were theatrical costumes, and presented the display as a performance rather than a sport. Costumes such as these, which borrow from fiction, draw skating into the realms of fantasy, where anything is possible. They fictionalise the event, presenting the skaters as characters in a play.

The young star of the winning Russian team was Julia Lipnitskaia, who performed to the theme from Steven Spielberg's holocaust film, Schindler's List. Lipnitskaia was wearing a short red dress, styled to resemble the red coat worn in the film by a Polish holocaust victim. This costume connotes youth and innocence (Lipnitskaia is 15).

Spielberg's use of a red coat, in a film that was otherwise black and white, makes the events of the holocaust more tangible by focusing on the fate of a single child. The red coat ensures that we will pick the girl out from the crowd (first in a crowd of passers-by and later, conspicuous by her absence, when the coat is seen in a pile of abandoned clothes). Lipnitskaia's dress achieved the same. Her performance was the highlight of the event: her diminutive stature, enhanced by the red dress, set her physically and emotionally apart from her competitors.

What these costumes suggest is that figure skating is more about culture than athleticism. It is an art, descended from theatrical and dance performances. Even in this fiercely patriotic competition, cultural heritage is valued over and above the nationality of the athletes.

Danny Cohen's panel-show gender pledge won't halt the comedy rot

The gender imbalance is a problem – but the smugness, scripted improv and stale formats are beyond satire

Enchanting comments below the line on my review of Sarah Millican the other day. "Not funny. Ugly to look at," writes one reader. That's the context, like it or not, in which we have to consider Danny Cohen's decision to ban all-male lineups on TV panel shows. Comedy can sometimes be ridiculously male – and so can the conversations that swirl around it. The idea that women might be funny in as wide a variety of ways as men simply refuses to sink in for some people. Another commenter, on Cohen's proposal of mixed-gender panel shows, said: "Just how thinly can you spread Sandy [sic] Toksvig, Jo Brand and Sara [sic] Millican?"

Cohen's pledge is clearly a good thing, and a long time coming. I've lost count of the female standups I've interviewed who operate an informal boycott of panel shows. Sara Pascoe, last year: "Anything that's horrible about women, I don't want to be in it. And most panel shows." Isy Suttie, the year before: "I don't have a desire to do panel shows … Often if you're the girl, you're [cast as] the stupid one." These artists are among the sharpest acts in UK comedy, and they're alienated from the means by which most British audiences encounter new comics. Something clearly had to be done.

But is Cohen's "something" enough? The problem, as identified by countless female comics, is that panel shows are "bear-pits disguised as studios" in Jeremy Paxman's words on Newsnight, "in which male comics set out to see who can pee higher up the wall". (His guest Jan Ravens called them "ejaculatory".) In fact, we could have a long argument about whether combative, shouty, cliquey and glib are inherently male characteristics. Consensus (some would say, sociology) suggests that women favour less competitive, less race-to-the-laugh forms of comedy – although plenty of female comics can match the men at that, punchline-for-punchline. There are many male comics, meanwhile – as Jo Brand indicates in this Observer report – who are just as put off by the panel-show vibe.

That's the point, I think: don't just change the gender balance, change the culture. It's OK, as far as it goes, to guarantee that every panel-show lineup includes a woman. But even where that's already happening, female comics seem to find the offer wholly resistible. If Cohen really wants to shake things up – as he should, because goodness knows the genre is creatively uninspiring these days – these shows need male-female parity, or female hosts and team captains. He needs a fresh approach instead of the usual tired assumptions about what's funny and what's possible for primetime comedy. And that's about more than gender. It's about the safe and smug form of humour that these shows often purvey, a humour that serves as "a substitute for thought rather than its conduit," in the words of Jonathan Coe's brilliant LRB article last year on the so-called anti-establishment satire of Have I Got News for You.

So yes, please do break the male domination of panel shows – just as the male domination of live comedy clubs has changed in the past decade, as Lucy Porter argued on Newsnight. But can we also do away with the domination of panel shows by self-satisfied, back-slapping Radio 4isms, by non-committal cynicism, by bloodless wit and scripted improv? And – while we're about it – how about challenging the panel show's domination of the airwaves, with the introduction of unheard-of new formats that allow a wider range of comics onto mainstream telly? It's not just women who are excluded from panel shows, it's many of the clowns and experimenters, deep thinkers and holy fools who make live UK comedy so rich and varied. Find the formats to get them all behind a desk together, and then we're in business. Reported by guardian.co.uk 12 hours ago.

Mother of 11-month-old Ava Jayne Marie Corless, who was mauled to death by pet dog, and her boyfriend are rearrested

A mother is under arrest on suspicion of manslaughter after her 11-month-old daughter was mauled to death by a dog.

Ava Jayne Marie Corless was in bed at a house in Emily Street, Blackburn, at about 11pm on Monday when she was savaged by what police described as an American pitbull-type dog.

Police and ambulance staff attempted to resuscitate the girl but she was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

The girl's mother has been named locally as Chloe King and the man in custody, her current partner, who has been named as Lee Wright, is not the father of the child.

Police have not confirmed the names of those under arrest. They were downstairs when the attack took place, police said.

Locals claim to have made previous complaints about the dog's behaviour to police.

Chief Superintendent Chris Bithell of Lancashire police said: "This is an absolutely horrific incident in which a baby girl has lost her life and I would like to take this opportunity to express my own personal sympathy to the wider family of baby Ava."

Bithell said police were first alerted by the ambulance service who were called to reports of the girl being mauled by a pet dog. A postmortem will take place to find out the exact cause of death.

Bithell added: "The dog is believed to be an American pitbull type. It has been destroyed and tests will be carried out today to establish the exact breed of the dog and inquiries into the history of the animal. I'm told it's quite a large pitbull-type dog."

Both suspects were initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect, before being rearrested on Tuesday morning on the more serious charge of manslaughter and will be questioned by detectives today, Bithell said.

Bithell added: "The lady in custody is the baby's mother and the male in custody is the mother's current boyfriend. The baby was upstairs in a bed in one of the front bedrooms and the two people who are currently in custody, they were downstairs when the attack took place."

Asked about claims from neighbours reporting dangerous dogs at the address he said: "As part of the investigation we are making inquiries to see whether there have been previous issues with this particular dog and I think at this moment it would be too early to speculate on that." Tunstall rapist Stuart Thom jailed for seven years after attacks on a woman and two schoolgirls This is Staffordshire --

RAPIST Stuart Thom has been jailed for seven years.

The 37-year-old raped a woman and sexually assaulted two schoolgirls before being arrested by police.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Thom indecently assaulted his first victim and went on to have sex with her while she was a schoolgirl.

Years later he raped a woman and sexually assaulted a young girl.

But it emerged the girl told a relative what had happened and Thom was arrested in 2011.

His first victim and the rape victim then came forward to make their complaints.

The first offences happened when Thom was a teenager. Prosecutor Steven Bailey told the court yesterday: "It began by him touching the girl and progressed to sexual intercourse."

The court heard the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has needed counselling after being traumatised by Thom's actions.

Thom, of Stanley Street, Tunstall, pleaded guilty to four charges of indecent assault, five other sexual offences, one count of rape; and two charges of sexual assault of a child under 13.

Peter McCartney, mitigating, said Thom is remorseful.

He added: "He has reflected upon his behaviour.

"He has demonstrated a genuine willingness to implement the required actions to sustain long-term change to reduce the likelihood of re-offending."

Mr McCartney added that the offending against the first victim happened a long time ago but conceded it had a significant effect on her. He added that the sexual assaults on the third victim happened on one occasion.

Jailing Thom for seven years, Judge David Fletcher said: "You have pleaded guilty to a number of sexual offences which span a considerable period of time.

"What you did was wrong, on every single level."

Thom was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register and made the subject of an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

Staffordshire Police today welcomed the jail term handed down to Thom.

Detective Inspector Andy Maxfield said: "Staffordshire Police will not tolerate people who abuse children." Reported by This is 18 hours ago.

Burglar pinches GCSE coursework from Blythe Bridge High School pupil This is Staffordshire --

SCHOOLGIRL Shannon McGeary has been left heartbroken after some of her GCSE coursework was stolen in a burglary.

The coursework and books – which included two years of work – was taken from the hallway of Shannon's grandmother's house in Brunswick Place, Hanley.

Make-up and headphones were also pinched during the break-in between 5pm and 6pm on February 5.

Now Blythe Bridge High School is supporting year 11 pupil Shannon who is due to sit her GCSEs this year.

Shannon, who lives in Chatsworth Place, Meir, said. "I walked to my gran's house from Hanley Bus Station at about 4pm and when I got in I put my bag in the hallway.

"I then went downstairs at around 6pm to see that the front door was wide open, but I didn't think much of it, made sure the door was closed and went for a shower. It wasn't until 8.30pm when I went to get a textbook that I realised the bag was missing.

"I now have so much to catch up on at school."

Shannon is now staying later at school to try to catch up with her studies.

Mother Kate McGeary, aged 34, added: "Shannon was absolutely devastated and was panicking and clearly shaken up.

"I'm furious. The next few months are going to be stressful enough for her, and I don't know how she's going to be able to catch up.

"It makes you angry that people would actually commit a burglary.

"This could have a massive effect on the colleges Shannon wants to get into next year. The coursework, textbooks and other school equipment will mean nothing to whoever has taken them but it's so important to her. This could put her back a whole year through no fault of her own – it's unfair."

Grandmother Dawn Ollerhead, aged 68, of Brunswick Place, said: "It is unbelievable that people would take a school bag.

"The police were very good in reassuring us but I am gutted for the girl.

"She was absolutely heartbroken. It's been very traumatic for her."

Teachers at Blythe Bridge High School are helping Shannon to try to replace her missing work.

A spokesman said: "We are supporting Shannon during this difficult and stressful period. Our staff will be working with Shannon to help her replace any missing work."

Staffordshire Police have carried out house-to-house inquiries in their hunt for the burglar. The burglar pinched a Fred Perry school bag, Apple headphones, a make-up bag and a key.

Anyone with information about the burglary should call Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 727 of February 5 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111. Reported by This is 17 hours ago.

Drunken sex pest believed girl, 15, was prostitute This is Grimsby --

A DRUNKEN sex pest made a nuisance of himself and asked a 15-year-old girl how much she would charge for sexual services.

He seemed to believe she was a prostitute and asked her the "price" of sexual favours, a court heard.

Aleksandr Chramcenko, 48, of Eleanor Street, Grimsby, admitted assaulting the girl on August 10.

Jeremy Evans, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that the girl spotted Chramcenko on the opposite side of the road and he seemed to be pointing to his vehicle.

She thought he had a mechanical problem with the vehicle and crossed the road, thinking he wanted her help to make a telephone call.

He asked her: "How much?" and she thought he meant the cost of using her phone. He told her: "I want to know how much to give you."

She became concerned and started to walk away but he grabbed her arm and stopped her.

He stood in front of her, used an obscene gesture and wanted to know the "price" she would charge for the sex act.

The girl, now 16, walked off but Chramcenko told her: "Don't leave. Come back."

Chramcenko was later arrested near his home. He had been drinking.

Richard Hackfath, mitigating, said Chramcenko was very ashamed of himself and was very sorry for what he had done.

Chramcenko, who is Lithuanian, had drunk so much he could not remember the incident. He worked full-time as a driver.

Judge David Tremberg told Chramcenko: "You took her arm and offered to pay her for sexual services. She was not interested in you.

"She was not a prostitute. She was deeply alarmed by what you did. She remained upset for a significant period of time."

Chramcenko was given a 14-day suspended prison sentence and must pay £85 costs. Reported by This is 15 hours ago.

Police and ambulance staff tried to resuscitate Ava-Jayne at the address in Emily Street but she was pronounced dead at Royal Blackburn Hospital a short time later.

Police said the dog, which was destroyed after the attack, had been identified by experts as a pit bull terrier-type that people are prohibited from owning under Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Locals claim to have made previous complaints to police about the dog's behaviour.

King and Wright were said to have been downstairs when the attack happened, while Ava-Jayne was in a front bedroom.

On Tuesday, Chief Superintendent Chris Bithell of Lancashire police said: "This is an absolutely horrific incident in which a baby girl has lost her life and I would like to take this opportunity to express my own personal sympathy to the wider family of baby Ava.

"As part of the investigation we are making inquiries to see whether there have been previous issues with this particular dog and I think at this moment it would be too early to speculate on that."

The couple were initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

Family liaison officers are offering support to the wider family of Ava-Jayne.

The child's father is understood to be Dean Corless. Writing on Facebook, his sister, Shannon Corless, said: "She is a beautiful little girl, she was only 11 month and didn't deserve to be took away so soon.

"You know what they say god only takes the best, you really didn't deserve to go. I love you loads princess. Your with the angels now princess. Auntie Shannon loves you loads."

According to King's Facebook page, she is a former student at Witton Park High School and Blackburn College who is studying food, nutrition and health at Edge Hill College in Ormskirk. Reported by guardian.co.uk 15 hours ago.
