A NEW-look Penzance Town Council met for the first time as it welcomed two familiar faces to head the authority.
Last year's mayor Phil Rendle and deputy David Nebesnuick were both officially appointed this week. They were joined by eight new members of the council who won their seats in the local elections.
The mayor and his deputy said they were keen to forge strong links with the county council.
"I'm determined to speak with Cornwall Council on the basis of equality," said Mr Rendle. "We don't have the same power, money and ability to do things but we should say that we know best about Penzance and we want you to listen to us first."
In an informal meeting held last week Mr Rendle regained his mayoral post unopposed while Mr Nebesnuick was challenged for his role by Dennis Axford but won the vote.
"Now that we have new councillors, I would like to see us develop more initiatives for the benefit of the people of Penzance," said Mr Nebesnuick.
"It also gives us the opportunity to bring in new ideas.
"We also have a new county council team locally and I think there's a real feeling that we want to work with them so our voice is heard more effectively in County Hall."
Citizens active in supporting the community were also honoured at the annual town meeting.
Barbara Rabbitte was presented with the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen of the Year Award, being presented for the tenth year, by Brian's daughter Sue. For more than 40 years Mrs Rabbitte has worked to support the town, from hospital work to fundraising for the RNLI and dedication to the Girl Guide movement.
Kieran Rutherford won the Humphry Davy Prize for his outstanding schoolwork in the sciences.
St Just Town Council has a new mayor following its annual meeting this week.
Councillor Kevin McFadden was unanimously appointed on Monday, replacing Sue James who has been elected to Cornwall Council and no longer sits on the town council.
A Liberal Democrat, she said she hoped to retain strong ties to the town council as her predecessors had. "I'm going to ensure that there's a bridge between county and town," she said.
Mr McFadden's deputy mayor was chosen after a secret ballot in which his brother, Neil McFadden, chairman of St Just's growing boxing club, won by five votes to four. Reported by This is 4 days ago.
