Hull-trained actress Sheridan Smith wins Bafta This is Hull and East Riding --

SHE was overcome with emotion as she stepped on to the stage to receive her first Bafta.

Hull-trained actress Sheridan Smith wept with joy as she picked up the highly-coveted Leading Actress accolade at the ceremony in London.

Sheridan, who learned her trade as a student at Hull's Northern Theatre, triumphed for her performance in the ITV drama Mrs Biggs.

The star, who played the wife of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs, said: "Is this a wind-up? Is this for real?"

She said winning was like an "out-of-body experience" and planned to call the real Mrs Biggs in Australia to tell her about the award.

Beating the likes of The Girl star Sienna Miller at the event on Sunday evening, Sheridan was stunned.

She was also up against Anne Reid for her role in Last Tango In Halifax and Rebecca Hall for Parade's End.

As well as having a Hull-trained winner, Kirk Ella salon Mark Hill had a team on hand to make sure nominees were red-carpet ready.

Mark's PA Gillian Atkinson was with Sheridan as she sobbed backstage after her unexpected win.

Gillian said: "She's such an amazing actress and so versatile.

"We were all absolutely delighted for her and she was overwhelmed.

"She'd travelled from Portsmouth and had her hair and make-up done on the train, it was a real rush to get her to the ceremony on time."

Sheridan tweeted after the annual bash: "Thank you so, so much for all (of) your kind messages. Can't believe it! Apologies for my language in the speech I was in complete and utter shock."

Sheridan will next appear in a new BBC drama, The 7.39, with Olivia Colman, who made Bafta history by winning two gongs on the night.

Although the Mark Hill team could not take credit for Sheridan's classy blonde up-do, they did style the likes of Millie Mackintosh from the Made In Chelsea cast, who also picked up an award.

Gillian said: "I was there from 9.30am until 10pm, it was a long day for everybody but it was worth it.

"It was our seventh year at the event and it's brilliant to be asked back, it's such a fantastic opportunity."

Mark told the Mail it was a "great honour" to work with cast members from Call The Midwife and Mr Selfridge, TV presenters, stage and film stars and comedians.

He said: "Some went for full-on Hollywood glamour with gorgeous waves and vintage-style put-ups and others went for a more disheveled look.

"With Millie, I decided to go for something different and create a style that was a little more fashion-led.

"She looked amazing and was a huge hit with the paparazzi.

"Sheridan Smith got the biggest cheer of the night – many congratulations to her." Reported by This is 20 hours ago.
