![Nottingham set Murder drama picks up Bafta]()
This is Nottingham -- A TV drama which portrayed Nottingham as a violent city has picked up a BAFTA. West Bridgford actor Joe Dempsie was among the cast and crew of Murder who took to the stage to collect the award for Best Single Drama at the Royal Opera House in London last night. The 25-year-old played an ex-soldier accused of murdering a young girl in the BBC drama which was screened last summer. It beat Everyday, The Girl and Richard II, starring Ben Wishaw and David Suchet. "It was a really strong category; we were up against Shakespeare!" said Dempsie, who also appeared in hit HBO fantasy drama, Game of Thrones, which beat Homeland, The London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony and Strictly Come Dancing for the Radio Times audience award. He was joined on stage by director Birger Larson, famous for the critically acclaimed Danish detective drama, The Killing. Larson had described a sense of hostility in Nottingham when he was filming the drama. Exterior shots were filmed through a red filter to give the city a bleak look. Dempsie, who went to West Bridgford School and trained at the TV Workshop, defended the director's viewpoint saying: "When I first left Nottingham for a sustained period to do Skins in 2006, the main difference I encountered when I got to Bristol was there was a friendly, jovial atmosphere all around the place. "That was a contrast for me with my experience in Nottingham and all those years growing up and going out in the city. I loved it and I always will do, but I definitely got the impression that there was this undercurrent of violence that was always bubbling under the surface in Nottingham. That element of danger, perhaps. "I don't think it's necessarily like that any more, but when I was there, it certainly was." Dempsie has also appeared in Doctor Who, This is England '86 and BBC3's The Fades.
