POLICE are urging parents to educate their children about road safety after two youngsters were hit by cars.
Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police, along with paramedics form the South Western Ambulance Service, were called to deal with two incidents on Tuesday in which children had collided with vehicles.
Emergency workers were first called to Admiralty Street, Stonehouse, at around 4.20pm after a seven-year-old child had been involved in an accident with a red Ford Transit Minibus.
The child suffered a minor injury to their leg and was taken to Derriford Hospital as a precaution. Just afterwards, at 4.55pm, officers were called to Segrave Road, Milehouse, following reports that a nine-year-old girl had collided with a blue Renault Clio.
The girl did not suffer serious injuries but had bruising and swelling to her ankle, hand and wrist, police said. She was also taken to Derriford Hospital to be checked over.
No action was taken against either drivers, police added.
Inspector Richard Pryce, professional lead for roads policing at Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "We need to ensure that parents are talking to their children about the dangers of roads and that they teach their children the Green Cross Code.
"It's really vital that parents make time to make sure the road safety message regarding traffic is really pressed home to reduce the risks of accidents as much as possible. There are more children out and about in the summer months and we also need to make sure that drivers remain vigilant too, but the important message is about making sure parents take responsibility and making sure children know about road safety, not once, but to keep reinforcing it, perhaps each time before they go out."
