THE mother of a ten-year-old girl kidnapped by a sex attacker has branded his sentence an "outrage".
Peter Carroll, 52, has been given a three-and-a-half-year jail term for grabbing the child and trying to indecently assault her.
He approached the girl as she went to the shop to buy rabbit food and pretended he knew a member of her family.
He then placed his hand on her shoulder and guided her into some bushes, where he exposed himself and tried to sexually attack her.
But the girl screamed, ran away and alerted her parents, leading to Carroll's arrest an hour later.
Her mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: "If I had it my way, they would lock him up and throw away the key.
"The fact he could be out in just over a year and a half and free to do this again is an outrage.
"We honestly thought he'd be given between five and ten years and we feel really annoyed."
The woman had allowed her daughter to go to Tesco in Bridlington to buy rabbit food on her own to give her some freedom.
Carroll, of Batley, had been prowling the area looking for a child, as can be seen on CCTV footage released to the Mail by the Crown Prosecution Service.
The terrified child returned home in tears after the attack on July 29 last year – prompting her parents to call 999.
They then drove back to Hilderthorpe Road in Bridlington with the police to try to trace Carroll, before he was spotted on CCTV in the resort's town centre and arrested.
The girl's mother said: "It has been really difficult, but we are taking it all day by day.
"The whole ordeal has had a huge effect on my daughter.
"She is shy and scared to talk to adults and won't stay in the same room as any male she doesn't know."
The girl's father said: "She knew we were in court and she wanted Carroll locked up as much as we did."
In January, Carroll was found guilty of kidnapping, committing an offence with intent to cause a sex act and inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity by jury at Hull Crown Court.
He was forced to sign the sex offenders' register.
Sentencing Carroll, Judge Simon Jack said: "When you saw this girl, you formed a plan and quickly put it into effect.
"You tricked her into going with you and took her to a quiet spot, where you hoped to get her to do what you wanted.
"It is very fortunate for both her and you that she had the presence of mind to run away.
"It is clear these events have had a profound effect on her and one which I suspect will last for a long time indeed.
"If you ever did the same thing again, you could expect to go to prison for a very long time."
Carroll will be eligible for bail after serving only half of this term.
He has also been given a lifetime ban from working with children. Reported by This is 2 days ago.
