A PORT Talbot couple who thought their numbers were up on the National Lottery have instead been left with a hole in their pockets.
Susan Hughes and husband Len thought they had scooped £450 on the National Lottery's Hotpicks game.
But their joy soon turned to despair when they tried to collect their winnings from the town's Tesco store, only to be told the lucky line was incorrectly put on for Wednesday's draw instead.
Tesco has apologised for the mix-up.
Mrs Hughes said: "We couldn't believe it.
"In the morning on the Sunday, Len said we had won £450 on the Hotpicks.
"We were one number away from winning £1,100 and Len said we could use the money to go on a spending spree in Swansea as we have just had a new grandson, Noah.
"But when he came back he said we hadn't won as some of the tickets were for the Saturday draw and some for the Wednesday.
"We went back to the store and they told us we should have checked our tickets before we left.
"I said it was the girl who served Len's fault and I then sent them a message on Facebook.
"They said it was up to the manager but they've now got back to us and said there is nothing they can do.
"They said it is up to the customers to check."
Mrs Hughes, 52, said she wanted to warn other people to make sure the same situation doesn't arise again.
"I just want people to be aware that it can happen," she said.
"It wasn't a lot of money but it could have been.
"You would have thought they could have given us some vouchers or something, just as a gesture of goodwill."
A spokesman for the supermarket giant said: "We're sorry that Mr Hughes feels his ticket did not reflect his choice of day, but we would ask that customers always check their tickets before the draw to make sure that they have the date and numbers they want."
Last week, 40 residents in the town shared a £2 million jackpot prize thanks to the People's Postcode Lottery. Reported by This is 18 hours ago.
