Search starts to find the next Miss Nottingham This is Nottingham --

THE hunt is on to find this year's perfect Miss Nottingham to represent the city.

And urging contenders to sign up is last year's winner, 24-year-old Juliette Brashier.

The dental nurse says winning has given her a wealth of opportunities.

She says: "It has been a fantastic year. I've attended lots of fashion shows and appeared in a few modelling shoots.

"It's also given me the chance to promote a lot of charities and organisations. It has opened up so many doors."

Not just a beauty pageant, the competition has gone against the traditional concept of similar events.

Angie Beasley, director of Miss England Ltd, says, "Seven years ago, we ditched the swimwear parade on stage and replaced it with a sports round.

"For the contestants to demonstrate they are aware of health and fitness is a major part of the competition."

As well as collaborating with the British Army fitness department, contestants must take part in an ethical fashion round. "This was launched in 2007 to inspire people to wear and model outfits that are recycled," says Angie.

"It's the most rewarding round because everyone becomes so involved with the idea."

Contestants must be aged between 17 and 24 and from the local area. They will take part in auditions from which 20 finalists will be selected.

An overall winner will be chosen at the Miss Nottingham final, which will be held on Friday, March 21, at the De Vere Village Hotel, Chilwell.

The winner will go on to represent Nottingham in the Miss England final in June.

With the 2014 Miss Nottingham contest soon approaching, Juliette, who lives in Sutton-in-Ashfield, is looking forward to handing over her crown to the next beauty pageant champion and wishes the entrants all the best for the competition.

"My number one tip would be to just give it a go because you never know, you could end up as the next Miss Nottingham," she says.

Juliette will be on hand to discover possible contestants by scouting around the city alongside Angie.

"It's not all about looks," says Juliette.

"People think that's the only thing you get judged on but that's not true. Your personality and confidence needs to shine through."

It's hard to believe that just a year before entering the competition, Juliette suffered with nerves. But she spent the following year working on her confidence and ended up scooping the top prize.

"It's not about the dress, it's the girl in the dress," she says.

In recent years, the Miss England group has raised more than £250,000 for The Variety children's charity from holding regional and national events. Reported by This is 13 hours ago.
