This is Hull and East Riding -- A jury has taken just 30 minutes to convict a man of raping his girlfriend's best friend as she slept in his flat. Ari Karim, 31, was jailed for five years at Hull Crown Court today for the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Hull on June 23, 2008. Judge Michael Mettyear described the evidence as "overwhelming" and said he was surprised Karim had not pleaded guilty. The judge also said his sentence may have been reduced had he done so. The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was sleeping on a duvet on the floor of the bedroom of Karim's then home in Great Thornton Street when he got up, leaving his partner asleep in bed, and took the girl's tights and underwear off before raping her. His victim woke up to find him on top of her and pushed him off. Karim, of Mosborough Crescent, Birmingham, was also registered as a sex offender for life.
