This is Somerset --

A community between Trowbridge and Westbury in Wiltshire was in shock last night after a teenage girl died on the railway line, apparently just after she was reported missing.

Police started hunting for the 16-year-old after she was reported missing from her home in Yarnbrook on Wednesday evening, but at 8.20pm, a girl was struck by a train at the Aintree Avenue crossing.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but the girl was pronounced dead. British Transport Police said they had begun an investigation. They said they did not believe the incident is suspicious.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances leading up to the incident, and to confirm the identity of the person killed," he said.

BTP and Wiltshire police were yesterday conducting door-to-door enquiries in the area, and BTP said they were aware of a missing person's report earlier in the evening.

"We are aware of that report to Wiltshire police but we have yet to identify the victim so we cannot confirm the two are linked at this stage," the spokesman added.

The driver of the train was said to have suffered shock. Rail services between the two towns were replaced by a bus service while investigations at the trackside continued into the night. Reported by This is 17 hours ago.
