This is Grimsby --
TRIBUTES have been paid to a "popular and bright" 15-year-old boy who died after being hit by a car.
Koen Allwood was killed in Dam Road, Barton, at about 10.50pm on Wednesday.
His companion at the time, a 15-year-old girl who has not been named, remains in a serious condition in hospital.
Humberside Police say a blue Peugeot 306 was travelling along Dam Road towards Waterside Road when it hit the teenagers, who were crossing the road close to the junction with Humber Road.
As reported on www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk throughout yesterday, both sustained serious life-threatening injuries and Koen later died at Hull Royal Infirmary.
Two 23-year-old men, who were in the car and uninjured, were both arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
At a press conference held at the scene, Roads Policing Inspector Mark Hughes said: "I imagine it will be quite traumatic as everyone involved is local to Barton.
"This is an absolutely tragic waste of life. The neighbourhood policing team are on board and assisting us.
"They will be dealing with this, and speaking to the school and the local community as they have been fully briefed, and from that people will, as far as we can, get the full facts."
Inspector Hughes said the investigation was at its early stages and as such, was not in a position to comment in what led to the incident.
He said the arrested men were at Scunthorpe Police Station assisting police with their inquiries.
"As we are at the early stages of the investigation, we are appealing for witnesses to come forward," he said.
"As part of the investigation we will look at the incident and the events leading up to it."
Specially-trained officers are supporting the family of Koen, who was a pupil at the town's Baysgarth School.
A statement from the school read: "Any loss of life is tragic. When it comes at such a young age it's even harder to accept.
"This was a popular young man with a bright future. Our thoughts go to his friends and family.
"We are all in a state of shock as we try to come to terms with the reality of what has happened. We are working with the young man's closest friends to identify how best to commemorate his young life.
"Our thoughts are also with the girl involved who remains in hospital.
"Clearly there is a lot of sadness within the school and we would request to be left alone to deal with this as the school community we are."
Tributes have also been paid on social media networks.
AmeliaPond tweeted: "#RIP. What can I even say about him? He was wonderful, a really lovely lad. We were in the same form at school, we were in form together for 4 years, every day of school. We used to have little chats about Star Wars and Star Trek. He was really great.
"Last night, he was tragically killed in a car crash. He's just gone. He was in his final year of school, and he was doing so well. Loved by everyone. The whole school is having assemblies and mourning in their own way. It's just awful. I hope you're at peace up there. #RIP"
Anyone who witnessed the collision, or the Peugeot 306 prior to the collision, should contact Humberside Police on 101 quoting log number 738 of November 13.
