• Czech beats Japanese world No92 comfortably, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1
• 'I like big matches … but the people are too loud'

Petra Kvitova likes her peace and quiet, and there was precious little of it for her on day two of the 2013 US Open as she suffered a mid-match blip against Misaki Doi of Japan, ranked 92 in the world, before going through to the second round.

The girl from Fulnek in the Czech Republic has travelled a varied path since she won the Wimbledon title in 2011 and life was predictably unpredictable for her again in New York, not her favourite place.

After her Wimbledon triumph she went out in the first round here and the US is the only slam where she is yet to reach the semi-finals, so maybe there is something about this tournament that does not agree with her. It is her sixth straight appearance in the main draw and the best she has managed is reaching the fourth round four years ago, when she lost to Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium in three sets, and again last year, when Marion Bartoli put her out, also in three sets.

"The wind was quite difficult," she said after beating Doi 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, "but it was the same conditions for both of us. It wasn't easy match for the first round. I never play well in America, and last year I played well when I won the US Open Series and played fourth round here. So I have a lot of motivation to improve my results here.

"I like Wimbledon, which is very calm. Here it's more of a big show. I like big matches on the big stadium but the people are too loud."

Kvitova was cruising at the start on Tuesday and finished strongly against a player 85 places adrift of her in the rankings. There was nothing noticeable amiss in that second set except the Czech's momentary lapse of focus that allowed Doi to capitalise on a few loose shots.

She came off the back of a loss to Simona Halep in the final at New Haven, where she was the defending champion. Reported by guardian.co.uk 3 days ago.
