Mother's plea after third child hit by car in same Plymouth road This is Plymouth --

A CHILD has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car on the same road as two classmates.

The 10-year-old boy escaped with minor injuries – but parents of children in the area have reissued their plea for action over traffic.

The latest incident happened at around 5.20pm on Saturday when the boy was involved in a collision with a silver Vauxhall Agila Estate, police said.

Officers confirmed the youngster was taken to Derriford Hospital with minor injuries and stayed in hospital overnight for observation.

The collision was the third time a child has been knocked over in Segrave Road, and all three are classmates at Montpelier Primary School.

A 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital after colliding with a blue Renault Clio as recently as April this year.

The girl did not suffer serious injuries but had bruising and swelling to her ankle, hand and wrist, police said.

No action was taken against the driver of the car, but the incident led a group of residents to construct placards and stage a protest in the street.

The group chanted "Kill your speed and not the kids" as vehicles drove past, provoking a mixed reaction from motorists.

Police have not said whether speed may have been a factor in Saturday's accident.

But Teressa Sidnell, whose son Kyle spent several days in intensive care after suffering a head injury and a fracture to his pelvis when he was knocked down in the street in 2010, said some motorists used the route as a "racing track".

The 39-year-old said: "It's just every mother's worst nightmare for your other child to run inside and tell you your son has been run over.

"It's a disgrace it has come to this. What is it going to take for something to be done, for a child to be killed? The first time was once too many, and it's happened twice since.

"The children are playing and crossing the road and the cars and lorries come hurtling down the road. The kids don't stand a chance.

"They don't brake until the last moment and seem to think it's a racing track.

"There is a big problem with speeding in the street but whatever parents do it doesn't seem to make any difference."

The Herald reported in May how a flashing sign had been installed in Segrave Road to encourage drivers to cut their speed.

A Facebook page called 'Segrave Safety' has also been set up by local campaigners and has attracted more than 150 members. Reported by This is 8 hours ago.
