This is Bristol --

A YOUNGSTER caught smoking at a Bristol school broke down, claiming she was being sexually abused.

Jurors at Bristol Crown Court heard the girl was told her parents would be informed and she went to a teacher and disclosed a man had touched her improperly.

Gavin Nellis, 38, formerly of Bristol but now living in Cedarwood Glade in Stainton, Middlesbrough, denies nine sexual assaults on the girl when she was aged 11 to 14.

It is claimed Nellis touched the youngster's private parts and chest. Kannan Siva, prosecuting, said the girl told a school friend, as well as an older lad, what had happened.

Mr Siva told the court: "The issue is, did it happen? Mr Nellis was interviewed on July 17 last year and he denied the allegations. That is why we are having a trial."

The jury watched a video-recorded interview the complainant had with police. She described how Nellis would grab her arm and make her sit on his lap.

She said: "Sometimes I would say I wanted the toilet. Other times I sat on his lap and just let him touch me in a way that I knew was wrong."

The girl cited other occasions when Nellis would cuddle her from behind before touching her between her legs. She said: "He said 'Sorry, just don't say anything'. I remember telling (a friend) at a Christmas party. I remember her trying to help me through it." The youngster said the last time abuse occurred was when Nellis grabbed her and put his hand on her chest.

She told police she reported the abuse after being caught with a cigarette at school. She said: "I got upset because I would be in trouble with my mum. I told the teacher."

The case continues. Reported by This is 1 day ago.
