Police say they will question 52-year-old over death of Rebecca Thompson, 11, once medics say he is fit enough

A 52-year-old man who suffered serious injuries in a car crash has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an 11-year-old girl was found dead at her home.

Rebecca Thompson was found dead at her home address in Bushey, Hertfordshire, just after midday on Saturday. The man, also from Bushey, has been arrested on suspicion of her murder and is in police custody in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a crash involving a grey VW Golf in the early hours of the same day, Hertfordshire police said. He will be questioned once he is deemed fit by medical staff, a force spokeswoman confirmed.

A postmortem examination is due to be conducted on Tuesday by a Home Office pathologist. Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which took place at the Elstree Hill roundabout at about 12.15am on Saturday, to contact them. Officers have sealed off the property where the girl was found while specialist teams gather evidence and undertake inquiries.

In a statement, Rita Cooper, the headteacher at Sacred Heart primary school, said: "It is with great sadness that we heard of the death of Rebecca who was in year six at Sacred Heart.

"Rebecca was a lovely girl who was hard-working and did well in her learning. She was looking forward to secondary school.

"The whole school is very distressed by this tragedy and our thoughts are with her family and friends. Our immediate concern is to do what we can to enable both children and staff at the school to cope with their shock and grief." Reported by guardian.co.uk 11 hours ago.
