Campus sex trial: Student 'was happy enough' - defendant This is Hull and East Riding --

A STUDENT rugby player told a jury how a woman handed him her door keys before consenting to a group sex session.

Stephen Johnson, 21, was giving evidence in his defence at Hull Crown Court after he was accused of taking part in a sex attack with friends Thomas Price and William Robinson at Bishop Burton College.

The woman told the jury all three befriended her outside the college, took her keys and pushed her into her room, where they sexually assaulted her.

She claims they then left, laughing.

Mr Johnson told the court: "I asked if she wanted to come up to our block to socialise and she said no. I said 'Shall we go to yours?' and she handed me her keys and I took them.

"She was happy enough, I assumed she wanted to go with us."

He said after they committed sex acts with the girl, they began laughing out of "embarrassment" and he returned later to apologise to her.

Mr Johnson said: "We started sniggering and laughing among each other. It was a silly mistake that we all got involved as a group. I went back and apologised.

"I told her 'We didn't mean to make you feel an idiot'. She said 'That's fine' and then gave me a high five."

In cross-examination, prosecutor John Thackray put it to Johnson that he had used another friend, not involved that night, to persuade the girl not to report the incident.

He said: "He came to you and said she was in a right state, didn't he? He said she is saying you all attacked her, so you all sat down and started hatching what you were going to do about it. He tried to get her to change her story, saying it was not as bad as she thought it was."

Mr Thackray put it to Johnson that they had taken advantage of the girl before running away.

He said: "You knew that you three had taken advantage of a girl on her own in drink. You had one intention from the word 'go'.

"The intention was to have sexual activity, to find a girl to do what you wanted with, regardless of her wishes.

"You tried to get her back to your place and that didn't work so you got into her room and when you got there, the three of you did what you wanted.

"Eventually, she had the courage to shout out and made a very hasty escape."

He replied: "No, that's not correct."

William Robinson told the court he never heard his friends ask the girl for group sex before they went to her room.

He said: "No one said anything like that. My intention was to go just to socialise.

"She was fine with the situation, she was consenting, she was not kicking and screaming or anything like that."

Thomas Price, 21, of Rotherham, is accused of rape and assault by penetration, Stephen Johnson, 21, of Scotts Garth Close, Tickton, is accused of sexual assault and assault by penetration and William Robinson, 20, of Doncaster, is accused of assault by penetration.

The men deny the charges and the trial continues.
