PICTURES: Sindy marks her 50th birthday with getaway on Sidmouth beach This is Cornwall --

She's the girl next door made of plastic, Britain's answer to North America's Barbie.

And, celebrating her 50th birthday this year, Sindy has been spotted taking a break from her busy schedule on the East Devon coast.

In photographs worthy of a fashion shoot, the blue-eyed doll is shown relaxing on Sidmouth beach, preparing to board the Seaton tramway, exploring the Pecorama model railway at Beer, and setting out for a walk from the Bulstone Hotel in Branscombe.

In Sindy's world – the doll is approximately 27cm high – the pebbles on Sidmouth beach look more like full-sized rocks. The dimensions of the toy railway proved more in keeping with her proportions.

Kevin and Judith Monaghan, proprietors of the two-star establishment aimed at young families, confirmed that Sindy had indeed enjoyed their hospitality recently.

They borrowed four Sindys from Pedigree Toys in Exeter, which owns the rights to the doll and is planning to mark her milestone birthday.

"Because we are a child-friendly hotel, we thought this might be a favourite hotel of hers," said Kevin. "She just loves East Devon.

"We had the photographs taken over the May Day weekend. In the ones at Pecorama she is the right size for the train, there was no need to change the scale. It wasn't easy to photograph the tramway ones, but the beach worked well."

The original Sindy, an independent career girl, was launched by Prestige Toys back in 1963, and her hemlines rose as the Swinging Sixties progressed.

She had her heyday in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and in 1981 even wore evening dresses created by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, designers of Princess Diana's frothy lace wedding dress. Millions of young girls pined for their own Sindy.

Things later turned sour as, with sales waning, toy label Hasbro bought the licence for the doll and attempted to make her look more like her rival Barbie, attracting a lawsuit from Mattel, Barbie's manufacturer, in the process. Now back in Pedigree's hands, Sindy has led a quiet life of late.

Denise Deane, of Pedigree Toys, confirmed that Sindy had indeed enjoyed a break at the Bulstone Hotel, and that plans were afoot for Sindy to return to toyshop shelves, with the face of her 1970s predecessor but modern styling, later this year. "It is a case of watch this space," she said. Reported by This is 22 hours ago.
